Love and Honor: A Novel, by Randall Wallace

Virginia cavalryman Kieran Selkirk is summoned to a clandestine meeting in the winter of 1774. There he finds none other than Benjamin Franklin, who reveals the brilliant soldier's assignment: He is to travel to Russia disguised as a British mercenary and convince Catherine the Great not to join the British in their war with America. It is not a quest for the weak of heart, for to succeed, Selkirk must survive savage terrain, starving wolves, secret assassins, marauding Cossacks, a court of seductive young women, and even a dramatic romantic face-off with the legendary Tsarina herself.

From Publishers Weekly
In this overwrought drama by novelist and screenwriter Wallace (Braveheart; Pearl Harbor; etc.), America is pitted against the European powers—only it's not the age of electronic eavesdropping and weapons of mass destruction but the year 1774, with razor-sharp sabers and good old-fashioned ear-to-the-door spycraft reigning supreme. Benjamin Franklin sends Kieran Selkirk, a young, courageous Virginia-born soldier, to Russia in the hopes of persuading Catherine the Great to spurn British requests for soldiers to help suppress the American colonies' rebellion. With the aid of disgraced Russian nobleman Gorlov, Selkirk blazes a triumphant path through the snowy Russian landscape, garnering acclaim for his military prowess and bold tongue. In true big-screen fashion, he bravely battles wolves in the harsh countryside on a breathless sleigh dash, fights Cossacks, learns of British intrigue, encounters beautiful women from almost every European nation and spreads good wherever he goes. Wallace writes with a melodramatic hand, as if every word carries great import, and his characters are either cartoonish or underdeveloped, with few leaving an impression. Readers will find it a stretch to believe that this single American, despite his quick blade and quicker mind, can really change the destiny of his homeland. Still, the novel should make a fine movie.

From Booklist
From Hollywood screenwriter Wallace (Braveheart, Pearl Harbor) comes this tale of swashbuckling and derring-do set in late-eighteenth-century Russia. In 1774, the British already realize that they are going to be in trouble if their American colonies revolt and have asked Catherine the Great, czarina of Russia, for 20,000 soldiers to assist in stamping out any resistance in America. In response to this threat to independence, Virginian cavalryman Kieran Selkirk is recruited by crafty spymaster Benjamin Franklin to travel to Russia posing as a British mercenary. Once in St. Petersburg, the plan is for him to offer his services to Catherine in her fight against the rebellious Cossacks, thus gaining her favor (it doesn't hurt that Selkirk is young and handsome--sure to draw the czarina's notoriously lusty attentions) and convincing her not to send the soldiers. This "probably soon to be a major motion picture" has something to interest just about everyone: bloody swordfights, bawdy and beautiful noblewomen, political intrigue, lively historic details, and an exotic locale. Highly recommended for all popular fiction collections. Michael Gannon

Hollywood does Imperial Russia
By Gary Griffiths
Randall Wallace's "Love and Honor" is the improbable story of Kieran Selkirk, a young Virginian of pre-Revolutionary America sent to Russia by Ben Franklin to convince Catherine the Great, tsarina of Russia, to keep Russian from sending troops to America to help the British subdue the rebellion. Wallace writes of this period like French artist Jacques David painted it: romantic, over-inflated, pompous, and idealistic. The novel starts out with a bang - an encounter with a pack of starving wolves while crossing the northern Russian plain in an open sled is harrowing and suspenseful. But from there, Wallace lurches into an 18th Century soap opera of scheming countesses and debauchery while building a ludicrously unlikely plot. Wallace, a talented writer of feature films whose big scene epics I've enjoyed, unfortunately writes novels like a movie script. Conversation between Selkirk and Gorlav, his Russian sidekick, feels more like "Lethal Weapon's" Gibson and Glover a pair of supposedly hardened mercenary cavalrymen. With more platitude than provocation and its few thrills overpowered by mind-numbing tedium, Wallace is better watched than read. Wait for the movie.

A Book You Won't Put Down
By Joshua P. Soloc
Randall Wallace's Love And Honor, a work of dramatic historical fiction, tells the story of a young Virginian cavalry officer, Kieran Selkirk, who is commissioned by Benjamin Franklin to travel to Russia and persuade the Tsarina, Catherine the Great, not to give aid to England in the upcoming war with America. Selkirk, accompanied by his colorful mentor Gorlov, embarks on the dangerous mission through the wilderness of Eastern Europe to the courts of Russian nobility. Dangerous packs of wolves, bands of Cossacks, and the harsh Russian winter are only the first obstacles in Selkirk's journey.

But it isn't until he reaches St. Petersburg that Selkirk is confronted with the true nature of his peril when he discovers that British agents are waiting for him. Unsure of whom to trust, Selkirk is forced to use all of his wit, charm and skills as a soldier in his encounters with European diplomats, their flirtatious daughters, and jealous Russian generals. This is a story of war, romance, and restoration.

Wallace does a spectacular job crafting his lead character, Selkirk, into the sort of man every guy wants to become and every woman wishes she'll meet. He's intelligent, strong, and lives without fear while at the same time is witty, sarcastic, and has a hidden pain that tugs his and the readers heartstrings.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Wallace writes in a style that makes this book hard to put down. There's a mystery behind every character which is slowly uncovered. Each chapter becomes a new discovery into the world of 18th century Russia and the way people survived in that time.

I know that I've read a good book when I don't want the story to end in the last chapter. I feel like I've made friends with the characters and I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. This is one of those books. It was a great read and one to think about putting on your bookshelf if you like sword fighting, romance, and exciting plot twists.

Love and Honor - Appropriate Title for an Outstanding Novel
By Scott McKenzie
I highly recommend this book

I really looked forward to getting my copy of this book. I enjoy an author who believes in heroes and heroines. The story is enjoyable and conveys the sense of history and beliefs are country was founded on. The protagonist, Kieran is the kind of man of honor and integrity all men hope to be. The pitfalls, temptations, and struggles he goes through to accomplish his mission are outstanding. His belief in freedom overcomes tyranny and intrigue. His ideals help him to overcome adversity and achieve love and honor.

The plot is thick with action, romance, and conspiracies. The description of Catherine the Greats' Russia, during the late 1700's, is breathtaking and well researched. I felt as if I was in a horse drawn sleigh in the dead of winter around St Petersburg. The fight with wolves, Cossacks, and enemies of American independence are excellent. One of my favorite scenes is with the bagpipes - I will not give away any detail. I like how a man can achieve love and still keep his honor even when there is great opportunity to take short cuts to achieve his goals. I like how women can keep their dignity even when confronted with prejudice and hardship. This is an outstanding book about love and honor and the beginning attitude of our nation.

ONE

The great advantage of living in a large family is that early lesson of life's essential unfairness. - Nancy Mitford

I am eleven years old and just another of the eight Ciccone kids about to have dinner with our father and stepmother, Joan, in the harvest-yellow kitchen of our home on Oklahoma Avenue, Rochester, Michigan. We are squashed around the dark oak table -- just recently stripped and restored by Joan, and still stinking of varnish -- and we are happy because we know we are getting chicken tonight.

My four sisters are all wearing variations of maroon velvet dresses with white lace collars, all made by Joan from the same Butterick pattern. Madonna hates hers, but Joan has told her to "shut up and put it on" and has made her wear it anyway. Another night, Madonna might have run to our dad, and he'd probably have given in and let her wear something else, but tonight he was at a Knights of Columbus meeting and arrived home just in time for dinner.

As always -- not because we are poor, but because Joan is frugal -- she has only made two chickens to divide between the ten of us. I feel as if I've spent half my life fighting to get the breast, which I love, but failing, simply because I'm too slow off the mark and everyone else beats me to it. Tonight, though, I've made up my mind that I'll get the breast at last.

But before I can swing into action, it's my turn to say grace.

We all stand up and hold hands.

I take a deep breath. "Dear Lord, thank you for this beautiful day. Thank you for all my brothers and sisters."

My elder brother Marty, who has just been caught smoking in the basement and has been disciplined by my father, snickers.

My younger sister Melanie -- born with a silver streak on the left side of her hair, across her left eyebrow and left eyelash -- assumes I'm sincere and flashes me a tender, beatific smile.

My elder brother Anthony, who is coming down from a bad peyote trip and is still clutching Carlos Castaneda's Separate Reality, closes his eyes tightly.

My sister Paula, always the underdog, makes a face.

My baby half sister, Jennifer, gurgles.

My baby half brother, Mario, in his high chair, plays with his rattle.

My father and my stepmother exchange a quick approving glance.

My older sister Madonna lets out a loud, prolonged yawn.

I glare at her and go on.

"Thank you for Grandma Elsie and Grandma Michelina. Thank you for our father and for Joan. Thank you, dear Lord, for the food we are about to receive, and could I please have a chicken breast tonight?"

Everyone cracks up, even Madonna.

I strike out. I don't get the chicken breast. Not quick enough off the mark because I am still heartily laughing at my own witticism. Poetic justice, I suppose. But at least I don't go hungry -- because no matter how often my sister Madonna has portrayed herself as the quintessential Cinderella and insinuated that Joan was our wicked stepmother, Joan has never starved or mistreated us.

On the other hand, she doesn't believe in lavishing expensive food on us either. She always reserves any delicacies -- Greek olives, Italian salami, expensive cookies -- for her guests, whereas the kids' biggest treat is granola. Whenever Joan isn't around, no matter how much else we've eaten that day, just for the hell of it we sneak into the kitchen and pilfer a gourmet cookie earmarked for the guests.

One Saturday morning, when I am fifteen, she summons us all to what she terms "the Formal Dining Room." She has spent the last few months redecorating it, during which time we have been banned from going in there. I assume she is about to unveil her latest decorating feat to us. While my siblings aren't exactly clamoring to view the new and upgraded dining room, I, at least, am slightly curious about the results. I just hope that Joan doesn't expect me to applaud her efforts, because insincere applause isn't yet part of my repertoire. That will come later, on the many occasions when I sit through one of my sister's movie performances and don't want to hurt her feelings.

Consequently, I find it difficult to mask my reaction when we file into the Formal Dining Room. Moss-green shag carpet, strips of stained wood on the walls, tiles in between them that Joan describes as "antiqued," one of her favorite words. I know it's the seventies, but nonetheless, my design instincts have already begun to form and I am far from overwhelmed.

But Joan hasn't summoned us to the Formal Dining Room so we can admire her decorating prowess, but because one of us kids is in deep trouble. In Judge Dredd mode, she announces that the angel food cake she's only lately bought for coffee with her friends is missing, and she wants the culprit to come clean.

"You'll sit here all day, until someone confesses," she decrees. None of us says a word. She puts an Andy Williams album on the turntable. I think to myself, Torture by music? I fix my eyes on the Asian landscape -- a fall scene of junks sailing along a river -- that our father has brought back from his recent L.A. trip and mentally repaint it myself.

After an hour, Joan leaves the room. We sit around the table in silence, examining one another's sheepish faces, each of us secretly trying to guess the identity of the culprit. Although I don't openly accuse her, I mentally finger Madonna for the crime, simply because I know that although angel food cake tastes too bland for her, she may like the name. Besides, filching it would be another notch in the gun that -- figuratively speaking -- she has continually pointed in Joan's direction. Half an hour later, Joan returns and announces that a neighbor has come forward and says he witnessed the theft through our kitchen window. Moreover, he has identified the thief: me.

I am innocent, but have no way of proving it. Besides, my friends are waiting for me in our tree house. They've just received the latest Playboy in the mail, and I am dying to get out of the house and sneak a peek at it. So I confess to having stolen the angel food cake. I am duly punished for my transgression: grounded for a week, without any TV. Many years later, the true culprit is unmasked when Paula confesses that she took the angel food cake, but by then it was far too late, as I had long since been punished. My own fault, of course, for having confessed to something that I didn't do. The birth of a behavior pattern, I suppose, and a harbinger of things to come.

Since Joan married our father, one of the pleasanter rituals she's established is that each of us can select our own birthday cake. Madonna always picks strawberry shortcake. My choice is always pink-lemonade ice cream cake.

Soon after the angel food cake debacle, I am on tenterhooks as to whether Joan will still make me my favorite cake. To my relief, now that I have been punished for supposedly stealing and have paid the price for my crime, Joan has forgiven me. And I get my pink-lemonade ice cream birthday cake after all.

Making cakes is Joan's greatest culinary accomplishment. But in general, she was an abysmal cook back then. She makes Spanish rice, but forgets to put in the rice and often serves us a massive bowl of stew from the freezer and, with a self-satisfied smile, says, "I just cooked this fresh."

"Freezer fresh!" we all chant under our breaths, careful that our father doesn't hear us because we don't want to make him mad. He demands that we treat Joan with the highest respect and insists we call her Mom. All of us struggle with the respect mandate and, for many years, practically gag when we obey our father and address Joan as Mom.

My natural mother, who was named Madonna, died when I was just three years old. I have only one clear memory of her. I am running around the green-grass backyard of our small, single-level home on the wrong side of the railroad tracks and step on a bee. As I cry my eyes out, my mother gently places me on her knee and soothes the sting with ice. I feel safe, protected, and loved. For the rest of my life, I will yearn to recapture that same feeling, but will always fail.

The sad truth is that I was too young when my mother died to ever really know her. For me as a child, the only way in which she existed was through pictures. One of the many I loved was taken of her sitting astride a buffalo -- she is so vibrant, so charismatic, so alive, such a star. Looking at her then, I couldn't believe she was dead, that I would never see her again. Nor could I reconcile her joie de vivre with her extreme piety.

I only learned about my mother's intense religious devotion twenty years ago, when my father sent all of us a bundle of her love letters to him. She wrote those letters when my father was away in the air force, and he and my mother were courting.

I read just one of these romantic missives written by my mother. After reading it, I couldn't bring myself to read any more as I am not a very religious man, and the extremism of my mother's religious sentiments is difficult for me to grasp. Although her letter is loving and sweet, to me it seems a bit fanatical. All about how God is keeping her love for my father alive, God this and God that. I am unable to read any more because I have quite a different picture of my mother in my head and don't want to distort it.

My father sends Madonna copies of those same letters, and I imagine that she also reads them. Nonetheless, we never talk about the letters, or about our mother. We avoid even mentioning her name.

We Ciccones may be afraid to confront our emotions, but little else fazes us. After all, we have pioneer blood in our veins and are proud of it. In 1690, my maternal ancestors, the Fortins, fled France and sailed to Quebec, then a complete wilderness, and settled there. Quintessential pioneers, they wrested a life for themselves and their families out of that wilderness.

Good Read - A Glimpse of the Real Madonna
By Sharon McGrail
I liked this book, but I also had mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, I do think it was a catharsis for Chris Ciccone to write it, after years of suppressing himself (sometimes unwittingly) around/under his older sister. On the other hand, it did seem like quite the zinger to put it all in writing for the world to see. Then again, it may have been his only way of getting closure.

It's easy for people to judge as in the "armchair psychology" point of view, but no one knows what it's like for another until they do, truly walk in their shoes.

I am a contemporary of Madonna's and lived a completely parallel life to hers in the 80s - not her lifestyle, but visiting all of the clubs where she performed, just not knowing it was her, and hanging out downtown even though I was an uptown girl. I didn't like her image when she first came on the scene, but grew to idolize her in the early 90s. Her Blonde Ambition Tour (which I attended in London) was a seminal event, possibly unsurpassed by anything else she's done. I admired her through the 90s, but when she married Guy Richie and started sporting an English accent, I started losing my affection, realizing all too clearly that every presentation of herself had been an invention.

Christopher's book peeled back the layers of invention and fiction that Madonna craftily wove around herself over the years, and he exposed a real person. Not the nicest person, no, but at least we got to get a glimpse of the real Madonna, rather than the fabricated one, or themed one she created.

I will say I admire her for her work ethic, and her drive. I can see how and why she distanced herself from the drug and alcohol scenes she encountered. She knew it would disable her, and that was not part of her agenda. Very insightful. It most certainly was one of the key ingredients to her success.

It's a good read, and for anyone who's interested, well worth the time and money.

At the end of the day does any of this matter? No, but not everything we ponder nor consider needs to matter. Enjoy.

Great book, fun read, and no fact-checker in sight.
By Amelies Gnome
I really enjoyed reading this book book very much. It's fun, interesting, and a little catty, but I expected that because of the topic. Granted I am not a fan of Madonna's music or her as a person, I don't know her but with this book I feel like I have an idea of what she's like. There is one in every family! If I had to choose between having a drink with Madonna or her brother Chris the author I would pick Chris. At least I know he won't yell at me for something stupid.
My only gripe is some of the fact checking, or lack thereof. It stated that the Charlie Chaplin studios were built "in the thirties" when in reality it was 1919. Formerly A&M RECORDS, now HENSON PRODUCTIONS located at 1416 N. La Brea Avenue, Hollywood, California. Am I being petty? Sure some may say I am, but if this fact isn't actually factual what else got overlooked?

Compelling and kind of sad.
By Unquiet American
I'm a long time Madonna fan with that said I've always known about her less than pleasant behavior having lived in New York and LA and running into her a few times. "My Life With My Sister Madonna" basically tells in detail of stuff the public has heard before about Madonna. If Christopher Ciccone wrote this as carthatic excercise to finally separate from Madonna's enormous shadow well I think he succeded because this is a hit job and it definitely hit the target. A lot of Christophers gripes with Madonna are legitimate for example when he works for her and she withholds payment or when he buys paintings for her that she asked to buy and then doesn't reimburse him stiffing him out of $65,000. I also believe that Christopher could have left Madonna ages ago but by his own admission loves basking in her fabulous light.I gave the book 5 stars because it's absolutely compelling and it is a quick read but I have to say that Christophers reason for writing this book is as flimsy as Madonna's reason for not paying him for services rendered. If you hate Madonna you will love this book If you like Madonna,Like I do you'll be left feeling a little disappointed that Madonna could be so cruel. In any case the book left me sad for the both of them.

From Publishers Weekly
Dent, former strategic consultant at Bain & Company, outlines the features of what he predicts will be the next Great Depression. The author argues that demographic trends were the greatest drivers of our economy, along with radical new technologies, working together to follow a four-stage life cycle of innovation, growth, shakeout, and maturity. While Dent's doomsday predictions are depressing, his theories are persuasive and elaborated in meticulous descriptions of historic economic trends and cycles. The author's candor is refreshing, especially when he discusses how equity investments experience a wide variety of returns, including substantial losses or extraordinary gains—and that the financial press has failed to remind the public of this fact. The book offers welcome portfolio allocation strategies during an economic crisis, as well as the bad news that the worst of the housing downturn will occur between 2010 and 2013. Along with domestic forecasts, Dent addresses terrorism's economic roots and the growth of megacities in South and East Asia with characteristic thoroughness. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Dent, author and consultant, predicts the economy is moving toward a major depression, with the deflation of bubbles in stocks, real estate, and commodities between mid- to late 2009 and mid- to late 2012, and it could last for a decade or more. Rather than offering only a gloomy outlook, Dent presents a road map for the difficult times ahead, suggesting cash and money-market investments initially and then highest quality U.S. Treasury, municipal, and corporate bonds and that same quality of bonds in stable Asian and European economies. When assets eventually fall in value, there will be unprecedented buying opportunities for those who are “lean and mean.” Theories and forecasts abound in the financial turmoil facing the U.S. and global markets in late 2008, and everyone may not agree with Dent. However, he makes a compelling case for his predictions and this is an excellent book to challenge a broad range of library patrons. --Mary Whaley

Give the guy a break?? Give me a break!!!
By Finance Guy
1st, Harry Dent is NOT an economist, he works with demographics. 2nd, in his last book "The Next Great Bubble Boom: How to Profit from the Greatest Boom in History: 2006-2010" he predicted the Dow to be 40,000 in 2009. You call that spot on?? Is that just a finer detail?? Was 2006 the start of the Greatest Boom in History as the title indicates? Harry Dent is very good at putting quotes in books and his newsletters that he can draw on as being right no matter what happens much like a psychic reading. When he has made big calls to the extent of making it the title of a book, he was dead wrong. Both AIM and Mass Mutual once had mutual funds based on the Dent philosophy and were sub-managed by him. Both have gone bust as being some of the worst performing mutual funds in recent history. If you followed his investment advise over the last 5 years you would be flat broke by now.

Cycles on Top of Cycles on Top of Cycles . . . That Appear to Be Heading DOWN
By Donald Mitchell
The main reason to read The Great Depression Ahead is to see the most persuasive case that can be made for an extended economic decline in the United States and other developed countries. After understanding that case, you'll be in a better position to make decisions that will leave you better off regardless if the economy recovers quickly or keeps sliding down for several years (as it did in the early 1930s). Mr. Dent is better than most forecasters for this purpose because he provides lots of documentation for why he develops the scenario forecasts that he does.

What's the essence of the case he's making?

1. Developed countries are facing many years when there will be declining numbers of people in their peak spending years.

2. A multi-decade commodity price cycle is about to peak to be followed by lower prices.

3. The burst bubble in real estate will be with us for some time, and prices will fall further and longer than most people expect.

4. There are no new innovations waiting in the wings to drive economic growth forward.

He takes that scenario and develops investing, business, and personal financial planning solutions over the next century.

The essence of the advice is to play it safe for now by being in short-term Treasuries and to later switch into Treasury bonds after interest rates rise a lot (expecting that the bond prices will soar as the yields once again fall to near zero). If you can sell your house now, sell it and rent. If you can sell your business now, do it. Otherwise, play it safe, hunker down, and wait for competitors to disappear.

Economic forecasts are notoriously wrong. In fact, some forecasters "predict" the opposite of the consensus. Financial forecasts are even worse.

Mr. Dent is famous for vastly overestimating how much the stock market would climb in the 2000s period. In this book he explains what he missed (commodity and real estate inflation coupled with unsettled world conditions due to terrorism and the U.S. trying to stamp out terrorism is unlikely places like Iraq).

He repeats and updates all the graphs you saw in earlier books and adds some new ones. He has so many cycles that I wasn't quite sure how he puts them all together. He offers free updates on this book's forecasts via an address on his Web site.

I'm pretty pessimistic about the economy and the financial markets over the next 18 months, but I can see that Mr. Dent is much more pessimistic than I am. He wrote this book before the U.S. and other governments began spending over $10 trillion to prop up the economy. As we saw in the second quarter of 2008, the government can spend enough to prop up the economy for a few months. There seems to be a will by government leaders to spend another $10-20 trillion in this cause. Since you and I will pay the bill, I can see why they are enthusiastic. Otherwise, everyone will want to kick them out of office as the economy sags and stays down.

Don't take the book seriously. Learn from the assumptions, keep your eyes open, retain lots of cash in safe places, and look for terrific bargains.

An interesting book and a worthy read
By Befragt
The specifics of Dent's thesis are more than covered in other reviews, so I'll focus on considerations that someone might want to know when trying to decide whether to buy the book or follow its advice.

First off, the book is fairly "readable." Although Dent uses charts and graphs frequently (indeed, his methodology is to study past demographic trends to ascertain long term stock market performance), he presents his conclusions in an easy-to-follow format.

Secondly, Dent does an excellent job supporting his central thesis that demographic trends can affect economic cycles. His book provides a well-thought out argument that the US, and indeed, the world economy is going to continue to decline as the result of the deflation of three bubbles, the stock market, real estate, and commodities.

Thirdly, it appears Dent has previously made several significant contrarian predictions that have proven correct, perhaps most notably the collapse of the Japanese stock market in the late 1980's and the tech bubble of the early 2000s. While Dent's predictions aren't always 100% accurate, they do appear to often hit near the mark (with the exception of his prediction that the Dow would hit 40,000, and probably a few others that I am unaware of).

One thing that I find interesting is that, using demographics, Dent not only predicts economic cycles, he explains WHY the economy behaves as it does. In this regard, I find that Dent's use of charts and past cycles is more persuasive that many other authors who simply identify patterns and make predictions based upon them (think of the Superbowl winner predictions, skirt length, or what have you).

The major downside to the book, to me, are the fairly constant adds for "free e-mail updates" - do these e-mails include solicitations to buy Dent's newsletter? I don't know, but I sometimes felt like the book was a teaser to sell more stuff to me. I also felt that Dent's free confession of mis-calling Dow 40,000 cut a couple ways - I appreciated his candor, but his post-facto rationales at points led me to wonder what might be missing from his current book. He's certainly had his share of misses, and it brings to mind the old saying that "even a broken clock is right twice a day."

Anyone considering this book might also want to review behavioral finance - the notion of "availability error" (viewing current events through superficially similar previous events) and "confirmation bias" (we observe events that confirm our hypotheses). Behavioral psychologists note that the use of so-called judgmental heuristics (shortcuts to manage large amount of information) can make assessments of market odds difficult. I can't say whether Dent's predictions suffer from any of these flaws, but readers may wish to consider books like Taleb's "The Black Swan" (one key point being humans see patterns where there are none), Paulos' "A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market" (overview of behavioral psychology) or even Dreman's "Contrarian Investment Strategies: the Next Generation" (extensive discussion of pattern-seeking) before committing their assets as suggested in Dent's book. This is not to criticize the book itself, but simply to suggest that as with anything that purports to predict the future, readers should go in with their eyes open.

I can't say that I'd follow Dent's stategies for investing, but the book at least made me think about how demographics could affect the economy. For that, I'd say its a decent read.

Assessment and Student Success in a Differentiated Classroom, by Carol Ann Tomlinson, Tonya R. Moon

Carol Ann Tomlinson and Tonya R. Moon take an in-depth look at assessment and show how differentiation can improve the process in all grade levels and subject areas. After discussing differentiation in general, the authors focus on how differentiation applies to various forms of assessment--pre-assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment--and to grading and report cards. Readers learn how differentiation can
--Capture student interest and increase motivation
--Clarify teachers' understanding about what is most important to teach
--Enhance students' and teachers' belief in student learning capacity; and
--Help teachers understand their students' individual similarities and differences so they can reach more students, more effectively

Throughout, Tomlinson and Moon emphasize the importance of maintaining a consistent focus on the essential knowledge, understandings, and skills that all students must acquire, no matter what their starting point.

Detailed scenarios illustrate how assessment differentiation can occur in three realms (student readiness, interest, and learning style or preference) and how it can improve assessment validity and reliability and decrease errors and teacher bias.

Grounded in research and the authors' teaching experience, Assessment and Student Success in a Differentiated Classroom outlines a common-sense approach that is both thoughtful and practical, and that empowers teachers and students to discover, strive for, and achieve their true potential.

Must have info for admin and classroom teachers!
By Jennifer
As a former classroom teacher who currently works with educators and administrators in a professional development capacity, I strongly recommend this book. It clearly organizes and expresses research-based best practices in assessment and demonstrates how those practices are essential for responsive teaching. There are also "case in points" included with every chapter, which illustrate how these aspects of assessment would like in a real classroom (to my knowledge these are actual examples that occured and not just made up illustrations). Like most of Tomlinson's work, there is not much "make and take" in this book. This might be frustrating for educators looking for a quick and easy strategy or tool. In my opinion, that just not how good teaching works (either from pd to teachers or teachers to students). What you do get is a clear understanding of best assessment practices and how to use them effectively to better understand how to meet learners' needs.

Great Book
By miclaroc
Hate to admit I could ever like a book on assessment and differentiation but this one is written well enough to be accessible, memorable, relatable and provides food for thought. Disagree with some aspects of their arguments for differentiation seems to be some inconsistencies and contradictions, but overall a good primer on issues facing teachers and students.

Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of the American Psyche, by Ethan Watters

The most devastating consequence of the spread of American culture across the globe has not been our golden arches or our bomb craters, but our bulldozing of the human psyche itself. American-style depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anorexia have begun to spread around the world like contagions, and the virus is us. Traveling from Hong Kong to Sri Lanka to Zanzibar to Japan, acclaimed journalist Ethan Watters witnesses firsthand how Western healers often steamroll indigenous expressions of mental health and madness and replace them with our own. In teaching the rest of the world to think like us, we have been homogenizing the way the world goes mad.

From Publishers Weekly
If you thought McDonald's and strip malls were the ugliest of America's cultural exports, think again. Western ideas about mental illness-from anorexia to post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, general anxiety and clinical depression-as well as Western treatments have been sweeping the globe with alarming speed, argues journalist Watters (Urban Tribes), and are doing far more damage than Big Macs and the Gap. In this well-traveled, deeply reported book, Watters takes readers from Hong Kong to Zanzibar, to Tsunami ravaged Sri Lanka, to illustrate how distinctly American psychological disorders have played in far-off locales, and how Western treatments, from experimental, unproven drugs to talk therapy, have clashed with local customs, understandings and religions. While the book emphasizes anthropological findings at the occasional expense of medical context, and at times skitters into a broad indictment of drug companies and Western science, Watters builds a powerful case. He argues convincingly that cultural differences belie any sort of western template for diagnosing and treating mental illness, and that the rapid spread of American culture threatens our very understanding of the human mind: "We should worry about the loss of diversity in the world's differing conceptions of treatments for mental illness in the same way we worry about the loss of biodiversity in nature."

From Booklist
During the last quarter-century, America’s cultural influence on foreign countries has become all too visible, with a McDonald’s opening on Tiananmen Square and remote African tribes sporting jeans and T-shirts. Perhaps less obvious, but no less worrisome, is the American exportation of mental illness documented in this unsettling expose by the coauthor of the recovered-memory critique, Making Monsters (1996). Watters emphasizes that different cultures have long had their idiosyncratic ways of handling stress that don’t necessarily conform to descriptions provided by the American Psychological Association (APA). Yet, because the APA’s treatment guidelines are increasingly being subscribed to and Western medicine’s recommended drugs prescribed by other countries’ health-care workers, such illnesses as anorexia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are appearing in cultures previously unfamiliar with them. In making his case, Watters provides four carefully dissected case studies, those of anorexia in Hong Kong, PTSD in Sri Lanka, schizophrenia in Zanzibar, and depression in Japan. Ultimately, Watters argues, the loss of cultural diversity consequent upon this peculiar form of Americanization will be keenly felt. --Carl Hays

Review
"Ethan Watters has traveled the world to look at how globalization reaches far beyond economics and into people's very conceptions of what constitutes health and sanity. I find his book provocative, original, and convincing." -- Adam Hochschild, author of "Bury the Chains" and "King Leopold's Ghost"

""Crazy Like Us" is both groundbreaking and shocking...Whether Watters' book will be sand in the engines of the bulldozers remains to be seen. At least it proves the West, despite its best intentions, does not possess all the answers."--"The Boston Globe"

"Watters commands attention with his repartee and conversational manner while drawing much-needed attention to the consequences of Western intrusion. This fascinating book deserves attention from mental health workers and Americans interested in the reach of their culture's psyche across the globe."-- "Library Journal"

"Ethan Watters has a truly original take on the way our country shapes the expression of mental illness around the globe. His is one of those books you can't stop thinking about or referring to in conversation, that permanently changes your perspective on beliefs you took for granted." -- Peggy Orenstein, author of "Waiting for Daisy"

"I couldn't put it down. "Crazy Like Us" is a fascinating and provocative intellectual travelogue, and Watters is a fearless guide." -- Alan Burdick, author of "Out of Eden"

"Searing, startling, and utterly unforgettable. Ethan Watters brilliantly surveys the stark interior cost of globalization, from our export of stress disorders to Sri Lanka to our marketing of depression in Japan as 'a cold of the soul.' "Crazy Like Us" is a grand tour of the new global psyche, distorted and darkened by the export of the American dream." -- Jason Roberts, National Book Critics Circle finalist for "A Sense of the World"

""Crazy Like Us" is a blistering and truly original work of reporting and analysis, uncovering America's role in homogenizing how the world defines wellness and healing." -- Po Bronson, author of "NurtureShock"

"In crisp journalistic style, Watters argues convincingly that what the American psychiatric industry exports is not so much drugs as diseases." --"Mother Jones"

".".."in addition to the cultural flotsam that drives the rest of the world crazy, America is literally exporting its mental illnesses...[Watters] is on to something worth pondering." --"Time" magazine

"A devastating account of America's psychological adventures abroad. The stories Watters tells will move you, surprise you, and occasionally infuriate you, and they will change the way you think about culture, human nature, and the mind." -- Paul Tough, author of "Whatever it Takes"

Eye-opening
By Karen Franklin
A successful virus is adaptive. It evolves as needed to survive and colonize new hosts. By this definition, contemporary American psychiatry is a very successful virus. Exploiting cracks that emerge in times of cultural transition, it exports DSM depression to Japan and posttraumatic stress disorder to Sri Lanka.

Journalist Ethan Watters masterfully evokes the heady admixture of moral certainty and profit motive that drives U.S. clinicians and pharmaceutical companies as they evangelically push Western psychiatry around the globe. On the ground in Sri Lanka following the tsunami, for example, hordes of Western counselors hit the ground running, aggressively competing for access to a native population "clearly in denial" about the extent of their trauma. Backing up the foot soldiers are corporations like Pfizer, eager to market the antidepressant Zoloft to a virgin population.

Watters has done his homework. Each of his four examples of DSM-style disorders being introduced around the world is rich in historical and cultural context. Despite their divergences, each successful expansion hinges on the mutual faith of both the colonizers and the colonized that Western approaches represent the pillar of scientific progress.

It is ironic that Americans are so smugly assured of the superiority of our cultural beliefs and practices, in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary. Do we really want others to emulate a country with skyrocketing levels of emotional distress, where jails and prisons are the primary sites of mental health care? Does our simplistic cultural metaphor of mental illness as a "chemical imbalance, " with human minds reduced to "a batter of chemicals we carry around in the mixing bowls of our skulls," represent true enlightenment?

Our implicit condescension is made explicit if we imagine the converse, one of Watters' interview subjects points out: "Imagine our reaction if Mozambicans flew over after 9/11 and began telling survivors that they needed to engage in a certain set of rituals in order to sever their relationships with their deceased family members. How would that sit with us?"

Not only is our missionary zeal condescending, it may be harmful. Watters provides evidence to suggest that the "hyperintrospective" and "hyperindividualist" model of Western psychiatry can be destabilizing to time-worn, tried-and-true indigenous healing practices, in some cases even producing the problems we naively believe we are combating.

"What is certain," Watters cautions in his conclusion, "is that in other places in the world, cultural conceptions of the mind remain more intertwined with a variety of religious and cultural beliefs as well as the ecological and social world. They have not yet separated the mind from the body, nor have they disconnected individual mental health from that of the group. With little appreciation of these differences, we continue our efforts to convince the rest of the world to think like us. Given the level of contentment and psychological health our cultural beliefs about the mind have brought us, perhaps it's time that we rethink our generosity."

Perhaps it is already too late to turn back the tide. Thanks to the exportation of Western diet and lifestyle, 19 out of 20 inhabitants of the tiny island of Nauru in the Pacific Islands are now obese. Previously hardy islanders are stroking out in their 20s and 30s. The globalization of the American psyche is more insidious, but perhaps in the end it will prove equally catastrophic.

Reading Crazy Like Us left me with a nightmare image of a homogeneous future world with McDonald's and Starbucks (see my review of Starbucked: A Double Tall Tale of Caffeine, Commerce, and Culture) on every corner, obesity gone wild, and Western psychiatry reigning supreme.

eye opening and heartbreaking
By B. Allen
Four thoroughly reported chapters make a devastating case. Many well-meaning people (who for instance flew to Sri Lanka right after the tsunami to help) and some straight-up money-driven forces (big pharma) have really failed to try to understand non-western ways that cultures deal with serious mental illness. It's a hubris very much in line with our other exports -- "democracy" to the Middle East, say -- but one that you'd think would be a little less egregious because of all the scientists involved. Hopefully this book, which was a smooth yet very detailed read, will spark a long-overdue debate. As a psychologist in training, I'm glad I read this book.

Yikes-An Eye-Opening must read
By Dr. Jan B. Newman
Crazy Like Us- The Globalization of the American Psyche

This is a well researched , well written expose of the repercussions and folly of well intentioned and not so well intentioned (big pharma) in changing the world view of the rest of the world out of ignorance and for profit.
This is an eye opening call to attention, must read for anyone who is interested in meme theory, psychologists, psychiatrists and anyone interested in the wealth offered by other cultures. This is psychiatry and medicine gone very wrong.

Watters begins with anorexia in Hong Kong. There is a western educated psychiatrist who notices that anorexia in Hong Kong doesn't match the Western paradigm. He presents the idea that there may be no value in categorizing a disease by its manifestations when there are different origins. He quotes another author about glamorizing a disease as it causes imitation which is what starts to happen. The Hong Kong psychiatrist Lee notes" the only hope lies in deep understanding of each patient's subjective experience". Unfortunately, he feels that the rest of the world is being steamrolled by DSM.
Next example was the well-meaning do-gooders who brought PTSD to Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankans had coped well with adversity in the past. They understood things in terms of karma. They had their own ways of dealing with any aftermath. The Westerners came over with dubious therapies stomping on cultural sensitivities and most probably left Sri Lanka worse than it would have been. This chapter is particularly interesting in exploring the culture and beliefs of Sri Lankans.
Next is schizophrenia in Zanzibar and last and most frightening is depression in Japan which was literally a creation of big pharma.
The lessons of this book are profound not only in relation of the described events, but also how we can be manipulated by clever PR. Read it and shiver.
