The Book of Unholy Mischief: A Novel, by Elle Newmark

In a world of violence and intrigue, who guards the truth?

It is 1498, the dawn of the Renaissance, and Venice teems with rumors of an ancient book that holds the secret to unimaginable power. It is an alchemist's dream, with recipes for gold, immortality, and undying love. Everyone, rich and poor alike, speculates about the long-buried secrets scrawled in its pages and where it could possibly be hidden within the labyrinthine city. But while those who seek the book will stop at nothing to get it, those who know will die to protect it.

As a storm of intrigue and desire circles the republic that grew from the sea, Luciano, a penniless orphan with a quick wit and an even faster hand, is plucked up by an illustrious chef and hired, for reasons he cannot yet begin to understand, as an apprentice in the palace kitchen. There, in the lavish home of the most powerful man in Venice, he is initiated into the chef's rich and aromatic world, with all its seductive ingredients and secrets.

Luciano's loyalty to his street friends and the passion he holds for a convent girl named Francesca remain, but it is not long before he, too, is caught up in the madness. After he witnesses a shocking murder in the Palace dining room, he realizes that nothing is as it seems and that no one, not even those he's come to rely on most, can be trusted. Armed with a precocious mind and an insatiable curiosity,

Luciano embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the truth. What he discovers will swing open the shutters of his mind, inflame his deepest desires, and leave an indelible mark on his soul.

Rich with the luxurious colors and textures of Venice, The Book of Unholy Mischief delights the senses and breathes fresh life into an age defined by intellectual revival and artistic vibrancy. A luminous and seductive novel, it is, at its heart, a high-spirited tribute to the fruits of knowledge and the extraordinary power of those who hold its key. In a world of violence an d in trigue, who guards the truth?

From Publishers Weekly
Luciano, the wily hero of Newmark's entertaining first novel, is only a street urchin when the doge of Venice's chef finds him, but once dragged into the kitchen as an apprentice, he discovers more bubbling than boiling water. While the town is in an uproar over the rumor of an ancient book containing magical potions and lessons on alchemy, Luciano pines away for a girl and learns the basics of chopping, sweeping and eavesdropping. As he and his maestro become friendlier, Luciano begins to learn that there's more to his teacher than a garden of strange plants and a box of spices. Newmark does a fine job of building suspense and keeping the novel barreling along, and her knowledge of and affection for 15th-century Venice adds charm to this nicely told adventure yarn. (Dec.)

Absolutely loved this book!!
By M. King
I won't go into plot as other reviewers have covered that beautifully. I just want to exclaim how much I love love love this book. I read it in two days and hid in the bathroom to finish the last pages without interuption. I hated it to end, and I'm wanting to go back and start over to discover even more layers. It's perfect in every enthralling detail.

I was drawn into the story quickly and held captive, savoring every sentence. The imagery was so alive and beautiful. At first I was intrigued by the food descriptions, but as the plot developed, so did the food metaphors and each meal became richer and more satisfying to the unfolding of the story. I kept going back and re-reading passages outloud. I love it when that happens!

I also loved the way the chef tried to enlighten Luciano with humanist questions inspiring the young boy to think for himself and to never blindly accept the statis quo mentality. These questions are the very ones I've always struggled with myself, and it was the Renaissance, afterall. I loved that the chef asked Luciano to repeat what he'd 'learned' after each lesson, only to be drawn back to the reality of the streets. Half way through the book I was yelling "No, don't do that!" not even sure of my own advice. Always on the edge of a twist and not trusting anyone.

I loved it when I stopped short, mid-sentence, and had to examine the cover again. I've been an avid reader of historical fiction for many years and I will definately share this book with all my friends, my book club, and anyone else who truly loves a great read. If you love this book as I do, you might like to check out "Hallelujah," by J. Scott Featherstone. And of course, who doesn't love Dickens? And finally, I did love "The da Vinci Code," but this book is different. It can stand alone and apart. It's that good.

Rich details and compelling characters
By Laurie Richards
This author has wrapped a suspenseful tale in the rich setting of a Venice dominated by religious and political intrigue. The Book of Unholy Mischief entertains and informs me with interesting historical facts within the mystery. The characters are truly drawn, and the beauty of the writing pulled me along as much as the mystery in the plot. Contrary to The DaVinci Code, which also drew me in by its compelling story, this novel is beautifully written. I hope we see more from this author.

(4.5) stars: "Food has power... Each dish works its own magic, a kind of alchemy that changes our bodies and minds."
By Ellis Bell
It's 1498, and the Renaissance is at its height in the city-states of Italy. Savonarola has just been executed in Florence, and Rodrigo Borgia is Pope Alexander VI in Rome. And half of Europe is in a race for dominance across the Atlantic in the New World. Venice is the home for a convergence of cultures in the Mediterranean, allowing its residents to experience foods never before seen in Europe (including the supposedly poisonous "love apple").

Luciano is a homeless Venetian street urchin, forced to live hand-to-mouth and to steal in order to survive. One stolen pomegranate and Luciano finds himself as the apprentice to the chef of the doge, the secular head of Venice. When the doge (not named here, but probably Agostino Barbarigo) poisons a peasant in the palace's dining room, Luciano embarks on a search for a highly-prized book that holds secrets that many powerful people will kill for. But what are those secrets?

Venice comes to life in this vibrant novel. The author has clearly done her research; you feel as though you're walking the streets of the old, decaying city; and the reader never quite shakes off the feeling that danger and evil are luring around each corner.

Food is also described in deep detail in this novel, though the author may have attached too much significance to its impact on the story. There are also a couple of anachronisms (tomatoes weren't introduced to Europe until forty years after this story takes place, and even then they were only used as table decorations until the 18th century). Still, the author has a wonderful way with words and a turn of phrase that's just as magical as the book described within. This is the kind of book that will make you think about it long after you've finished reading the last page. I really hate The Da Vinci Code comparisons, but The Book of Unholy Mischief is much more sophisticated, layered, and intelligent than that book.
