Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life, by John Calipari

If recent history has taught us anything, it’s that nobody goes through life unscathed—no matter how rich, how smart, how talented, or how fortunate they may be. White collar, blue collar, or no collar, there is an undeniable commonality to the raw emotion that strikes people when they are knocked down.

University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari has experienced his share of public setbacks, but he has learned that bad situations are permanent only if you allow them to be. What Coach Cal—as players, peers, and his legion of fans that make up the Big Blue Nation call him—learned from his experiences was the importance of having the right attitude when dealing with life’s major impediments. On the court and off, he emphasizes to his players that a big part of success is being able to handle obstacles. Now he is offering you the chance to learn the same strategies that he teaches the young men who play for him. By becoming an active participant in your own resurrection—through practice exercises and tips from Coach Cal and his deep bench of highly successful people—you too will gain the tools and insight to understand that it’s never a matter of how far you have fallen, but instead it’s about how high you bounce back.

Review
"When the ball doesn't bounce your way, you have to find a way to Bounce Back. Coach Calipari provides you with the playbook to rebound from life's many setbacks. -- Harvey Mackay, author of the "New York Times" #1 bestseller "Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive"

About the Author
John Calipari is the current head coach of the University of Kentucky’s men's basketball and a veteran of nearly 20 college seasons at the University of Memphis and the University of Massachusetts. Widely regarded as one of the greatest program builders in all of college basketball, Calipari's teams have earned 11 conference titles, 12 NCAA Tournament berths and two Final Fours. Of his past three point guards, two have been NBA Rookie of the Year and the third, John Wall, was Washington’s No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He received the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award for the 1995-1996 and 2007-2008 seasons, as well as the Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year honor for 2008-09.

Calipari’s first season in The Bluegrass State saw a complete rejuvenation of the program that had fallen from its perch atop college basketball. With the nation’s best freshman class entering for 2010-11, the Wildcats will again be in the thick of the race on the road to the Final Four. Calipari and his wife, Ellen, have three children, Erin, Megan, and Bradley. INTRODUCTION

Letter from Cal

Every summer—after I've had time to digest the previous season—I send a letter to all my players. In it I put forth my expectations for the season and set the tone for what we will work to accomplish when we begin play in November. For you, the reader, the following is your introductory letter to becoming a member of my Bounce Back Team.

February 2009

Dear Bounce-Back Team Member:

Who would have ever guessed something good would come from blowing a nine-point lead with two minutes and twelve seconds to go in the 2008 NCAA men's basketball championship game?

But the loss of my former team, the Memphis Tigers, in that game, the devastation of that bitter end to the 2007?08 season and the way we all dealt with the aftermath provided the impetus for me to write this book, which I envision helping you get through your own personal bounce back. A lot has changed since those two minutes and twelve seconds transpired. There's been another fantastic season of college basketball played; a new and worthy champion, the University of North Carolina, won the 2009 national title; and I've left the University of Memphis for the dream job I accepted at the University of Kentucky on April 1, 2009. But the experiences, lessons, and results of that magical 2007?08 campaign will live forever with me, and now, hopefully with you. That's the silver lining I've discovered— knowing that the total, public humiliation of letting that lead slip away will now help me to touch lives in a positive way that otherwise would not have been possible.

Simply by reading and embracing the messages within this book, you will become a member of a special team—my team. The circumstances that led you to pick up this book—separation, divorce, foreclosure, downsizing, firing—have no bearing on how you came to the team. The important thing is, you found it, and you are willing to let me coach you through this period in your life. You have already taken a huge first step by acknowledging you need some guidance and direction.

You are part of a diverse group of people, and that diversity is something I'm quite comfortable with. My team at Kentucky (and before that at the University of Memphis and the University of Massachusetts) has always had players from diverse backgrounds and social levels. They come to me from various sets of life experiences. Some have been from privileged backgrounds, others were from middle-class homes, but most have been underprivileged African American adolescents whose young lives have been characterized by one bounce back after another. I'm proud to say I've been able to impact on their lives in positive ways, and I will do the same for you now that you're part of my team. Some of my guys have gone to the NBA, like Marcus Camby, Derrick Rose, and Tyreke Evans, but the majority of my former players have gone on to the “real world” far away from the arenas, the gyms, and the adulation. It is their stories of success and the overcoming of odds that I share most often. Nothing is more gratifying to me than having former players come back and thank me for the tough love and the coaching I provide for each and every young man.

Hopefully my impact on you will have a similar resonance. Everyone reading this book is coming to it from a different place. Some are incredibly wealthy, some are incredibly poor. Some have been knocked down before, and some are “rookies” entering their very first bounce-back experience. I've had two significant—public—bounce backs in my first fifty years of life, and I fully expect there to be others. Almost no one goes through life unscathed, and the ability to overcome obstacles is often what separates the haves from the have-nots.

The pages that follow will be your personal playbook to overcoming whichever of life's obstacles have brought you here. This is a book about coaching you through your bounce back, and when basketball experiences serve as illustrations for your benefit, I've included them. There are all sorts of setbacks in life; they can be as varied as the people who are affected by them. You are not the first to be dealing with the emotions and strife that result from life's obstacles, and you will not be the last. But by the time we are finished, you will be in a better position mentally and emotionally, I promise you that.

Whatever it is that has spurred you to pick up this book, there are certain undeniable rungs on the ladder of a bounce back that everyone will deal with. It's your ability to face the challenges head-on and with a positive mental attitude that will determine the ultimate success of your revitalization. Don't be fearful of the odd sensations that accompany the climb up the ladder; they are perfectly normal. Without them, you wouldn't be human.

Let me be the first to tell you, in brutally honest terms, that this could very well be one of the toughest undertakings you've faced in your life. There will be days when you think you have taken two steps up the ladder only to find out you have actually taken two steps down. You may feel depressed, defeated, or dispirited. At times it may seem like there is no hope and you are living in a permanent state of darkness. But I'm here to tell you those feelings will not last forever. You just need to work through them and allow me to coach you. Put your faith in me, and I will do the same with you.

The only one who can turn your situation around is you. That doesn't mean you can't solicit and accept help, but it does mean you are the main character in the story we are about to write of your bounce back. In fact, you will be doing a fair share of writing throughout this book, so be aware that you cannot be passive in any way, shape, or form. My Kentucky team works past exhaustion, and for your bounce back you will need to do the same.

You are going to be active with our whole team of bounce backers who are already congregating at a website I have set up: www.coachcalbounceback.com. At that site, we are building a community of bounce-back team members who will share their ups, their downs, their triumphs, and their tips. Think of it as our Players' Lounge, where we can congregate, commiserate, and coalesce as a unit. I encourage you to visit the site often and take part in the discussions and the sharing we are doing.

In 1999 when I was fired by the NBA's New Jersey Nets in a very public manner, I needed what you now hold in your hands—a book which would let me know that what I was going through was perfectly normal and all part of a multistage process that would eventually lead to my bounce-back job (for me it meant returning to the college game at Memphis, where we went to two Elite 8s and a Final Four). For you it can mean a new career, a new significant other, or a fresh start altogether.

Because of the many facets to a bounce back, this book is meant to be digested in bites. You are welcome to pop in and out as your own personal bounce back unfolds. Some of you may be well into your job search, and others may still be “under the covers.” But what's more important is that you recognize that you're not alone. Millions of people are going through life's turmoil, and every one of them has a lesson to be shared, a tip to offer, or a word of hope that will inspire you.

Your teammates and I are here for you. Lean on us, and form a trust and bond so when you're able, you can turn around and help the next person on the ladder behind you. Your goal is to help yourself first, then at some point down the road, you will help others. It may seem unimaginable now, but soon you will be the one giving guidance, not receiving it.

You have to be willing to put in the time and be willing to be persistent with your bounce back, and you need to be coachable. Listen to my words and those of the experts I've reached out to—because we have been there before. The best way to learn is by having the advice of those who have been in your place before.

As I told my eventual Final Four, national runner-up Memphis team in their August 2007 letter prior to the 2007?08 season, “Let's all work with perfection in mind as we work on our weak areas. To talk in these terms may put more pressure on us, but in my opinion the only pressure is to prepare this summer like it's your last summer to prepare—the rest will take care of itself. If we do prepare with a passion for perfection, we will all expect to win every game whoever the opponent. To reach your personal goals, we must be playing on the last day!”

I'm not naive enough to think my letter was the reason our Memphis team won more college basketball games than any team ever had in a single season (thirty-eight) and had winning streaks of twenty-six and twelve games, or why we became a true, once-in-a-generation “dream team,” but I do know my one-page, preseason letter put everyone in the same mind-set as we strove toward our goal.

That's what this letter is meant to do for you.

What I discuss within this book are many of the same principles I discuss when Fortune 500 companies ask me to come and coach their workforces. Bounce backs are constantly cropping up in the business world—especially now—and there are many parallels between what I do with my Kentucky team and what international corporations should be doing with their employees and resources. Business—and life—is all about bouncing back. It's not about how far you fall but how high you rebound.

In fact, in the time since I began working on this book, I have encountered an array of people and stories of famous (and not-so-famous) folks who have gone through their own bounce backs. Some were fired from their jobs, others were laid off, and many had seen their retirement funds shrink substantially or their homes face foreclosure, and still more were enduring a separation from a loved one.

Together, we will get you through whatever it is you are attacking right now. Stay with me and don't...

If Coach Calipari can't motivate you, nobody can
By Sam-I-Am
I bought the audio book version and it was great to hear Calipari's insights in his own voice. You don't have to be a basketball fan, or even necessarily a Calipari fan, in order to glean some valuable new insights from this book and solid strategies for crafting your own bounce back. In the audio version of this book Coach Calipari references a web site, [...], as a place where you can download additional materials and read first hand accounts of other readers' bounce back stories. Unfortunately, by the time I discovered this book that site was no longer active. I sent a couple of emails to the publisher asking if the site had been moved but I never received a response. Perhaps in this Kindle edition that information has been updated (anyone care to comment)? I've given this book to friends who were facing adversity in their personal or professional circumstances and received some sincere thanks in return. I hope it works for you too.

Fantastic!
By Karl
I wish I had someone like Coach Cal chirping in my ear, a loooong time ago!

I've been up and down more than a few times in life, and while I have done the best I could with the information I had at the time, I wish to God I would have had the information that is in this book, much sooner.

I have always sat in complete wonderment at how so many successful people seem to handle their setbacks so well, and come back from them like they never happened, and always wished I knew whatever it was that they knew...

This book will tell you.

A lot to gain from this book
By KV92192
This is a helpful book that provides a lot of good insights on life regardless of your situation. Even if you are not currently trying to "bounce back" from any tragedy or misstep, the tips in this book can be applied to everyday life. Parts of the book come off a little bit redundant, but Coach Cal does a good job of interpreting and applying a similar message to many different situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who is open to tips for being successful in any aspect of life.

Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners, by Jane D. Hill, Kathleen M. Flynn

As more and more English language learners (ELLs) are included in mainstream classrooms, what can we do to ensure that they understand academic content and develop their English language skills? To answer this question, authors Jane Hill and Kathleen Flynn have examined decades of research, interviewed mainstream teachers with ELLs in their classrooms, and reviewed the classroom recommendations from Marzano, Pickering, and Pollock’s seminal Classroom Instruction That Works (2001) through an ELL lens. The result is Classroom Instruction That Works with English Language Learners——a comprehensive guide to helping elementary school students at all levels of English language acquisition succeed.

The strategies discussed in the book include homework and practice, summarization and note taking, and use of nonlinguistic representations, among many others. For each strategy, the authors provide a summary of the research, detailed examples of how to modify the strategy for use with ELLs in mainstream classrooms, and teacher accounts of implementation. Because ELLs face cultural hurdles as well as linguistic ones, this book also shows teachers how to glean insight into students’ backgrounds and address the cultural biases inherent in many classroom practices.

Accommodating English language learners is one of the greatest challenges educators face today. Just as different levels of fluency require different approaches, so too do different backgrounds and languages. This practical, research-based book gives elementary school teachers the guidance they need to help ELLs of all nationalities thrive alongside their English-dominant peers.

Very Good, Easy Reading Book for Teachers Who Want to Learn More About English Language Learners
By Lynn Ellingwood
I thought this book was very good for classroom teachers who want clear information on how to include English Language Learners in their classrooms. It is very difficult to explain to classroom teachers how to include students who are learning English in short sound bites. This book helps clarify information and teachers can read it at their leisure.

I personally don't like the term English Language Learners because it denies the fact that the students have their own languages and those languages shouldn't be ignored. In fact, using the student's native language helps students learn English.

Fantastic for teachers of beginning ELL students
By Pamela Hawkins
I have a child in my class this year that spoke no English at the beginning of the year. I purchased this book, read it, and adapted
my instruction accordingly. This child is now speaking, writing, and
reading English. She has also gone from being very shy and withdrawn
to being very outgoing and happy. I am constantly referring back to
this wonderful book. Thanks!!!

Great resource for teachers and student teachers
By Betty Spahr
Inspired Teacher: How to Know One, Grow One, or Be One by Carol Frederick Steele
Thought-provoking book which allows teachers to do self-evaluation of their teaching skills. The checklists provide an easy way to analyze how your teaching measures up. Her personal testionials are refreshing to demonstrate how real teachers sometimes struggle to find the best techniques. The stories of other real teachers are amusing and teach to her points.
I believe this book would be very helpful for student teachers and new teachers. Using the checklists can also help current teachers to strive for the next level. Administrators would find it helpful in evaluating their staff performance.
A MUST READ for any educator.

Long for This World: A Novel, by Sonya Chung

Pushcart Prize nominee Sonya Chung has displayed her stunning talent in her award-winning short fiction and essays. Now, she renders the compelling story of a troubled family straddling cultures, fleeing and searching, in her piercing and profoundly humane first novel . . . In 1953, on a small island in Korea, a young boy stows away on the ferry that is carrying his older brother and his wife to the mainland. Fifty-two years later, Han Hyun-kyu is on a plane flying back to Korea, leaving behind his own wife in America. It is his daughter, Jane a war photographer recently injured in a bombing in Baghdad and forced to return to New York who journeys to find him in the small town in South Korea where his brothers have settled. Here, father and daughter take refuge from their demons, flirt with passion, and, in the wake of tragedy, discover something deeper and more enduring than they could have imagined . . . Just as Monica Ali's Brick Lane introduced readers to a world that is both exotic and immediate, Long for This World illuminates the complexities and the richness of family bonds and establishes Chung as an exciting new voice in fiction . . .

From Publishers Weekly
When Han Hyun-ku appears on the doorstep of his younger brother's home in Korea nearly 40 years after he immigrated to America, the far-flung members of the Han family find their lives unexpectedly intersecting in this elegant debut novel. Han Hyun-ku's adult daughter, Jane, a photojournalist who narrowly escaped death from an explosion in Baghdad, follows her father to Korea, inwardly pleased that he has left behind her alcoholic, self-centered mother. Meanwhile, Jane cannot shake her memories of the harrowing experience that ended her longtime relationship with her ex and sent her to Baghdad. In Korea, Han Jung-joo, Han Hyun-ku's sister-in-law, accepts the arrival of these unexpected guests with her usual serenity, but as her worry for her pregnant, troubled daughter grows, the household begins to break apart. Han Jung-joo's younger brother, a divorced artist, arrives, precipitating events that change everyone's lives forever. Switching deftly between different characters' points of view, Chung portrays with precision and grace each character's struggle to find his or her place in the family and in the world. (Mar.)

From Library Journal
The title of Chung's exquisite novel seems to be missing a word: "not long for this world" would be the easy, expected phrase. But little is easy or expected in this multilayered story of two brothers—one Korean and the other who chooses to become Korean American—and their scattered families, whose lives converge in a perfectly blended East/West house on a faraway Korean island. When Han Hyun-ku unexpectedly arrives at his younger brother's home, he is escaping an American life circumscribed by a detached wife and troubled son. His exhausted daughter, Jane, a renowned photojournalist of death and destruction, follows her missing father. Strangers that they are even among family, father and daughter are gratefully absorbed into a seemingly easy rhythm, but the temporary peace cannot ease inevitable tragedy. "Some people are not long for this world," Jane remarks. "The rest of us survive." VERDICT Readers who enjoyed superbly crafted, globe-trotting family sagas such as Kamila Shamsie's Burnt Shadows, Naeem Murr's The Perfect Man, or Changrae Lee's A Gesture Life will swoon over Chung's breathtaking debut. —Terry Hong, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program, Washington, DC

From Booklist
It is 1953 when young Han Hyun-kyu flees his tiny South Korean island as a stowaway on a ferry carrying his older brother and sister-in-law to the mainland. More than 50 years later, he impulsively boards a plane back to Korea, leaving behind his life in America, as well as his wife and two grown children. Meanwhile, in New York City, Han Hyun-kyu’s eldest daughter, Jane, a determined war photographer, is living with her younger brother, Henry, a recovering alcoholic, as she recuperates from injuries suffered while on assignment in Baghdad. When Jane learns of her father’s disappearance, she voyages to an isolated Korean town to find him living with her aunt and uncle. There, straddled between their American culture and a foreign one, Jane and her various extended family members confront and grapple with their respective pasts as they struggle to come to terms with a life that is no longer familiar. Moving between landscapes and a variety of perspectives, Chung’s ambitious debut explores the intricacies and aggravations of family, culture, and identity. --Leah Strauss

Long for this World
By Gregory A. Zuroski
I was introduced to Sonya Chung and her first novel, Long for this World, at a bookstore author appearance and I anticipated liking it. Still, I was really impressed by how good it is and how compelling the characters and the story are.

The story is that of the members of the Han family, some of whom have emigrated to the United States and some who have remained in Korea. Told from the perspective of Jane, an American-born daughter of immigrants, it develops the personal stories and the emotions of a handful of characters and in so doing, explores a number of themes including: the Korean-American experience; the immigrant experience; family and sibling relationships; friendship and attraction; and ultimately, on how the currents on which our lives float are formed by people and events around us, some close and some at some distance in time and place.

The portrait of Jane, the narrator, a photojournalist, is a real achievement. I was interested in her as soon as the story began and she just kept becoming more fascinating throughout the book. Making her a photojournalist and in fact a war correspondent was a very good artistic decision. It allows the author to describe events and characters visually within the media of a novel that is after all created of words and in that way, abstract. Jane views the world through a camera's lens and we see it framed in ways that she chooses. It is a very effective device. At her presentation, Ms. Chung indicated that she had worked hard to render this character realistically despite the fact that she herself had little personal experience with photography or photojournalism before researching for the book.

There seems to be conversation at how this book speaks to female readers especially. I would like to add that I find the portrayal of male characters especially engaging. As an older man, father of three grown daughters, I identified with the immigrant physician Han Hyun-kyu and understood deeply his need to return to Korea and take a different look at his life and his world. He is an especially silent man but his character is somehow eloquent at conveying an unidentified longing for something more. (Note the title).

In Korea, we are introduced to Chae Min-suk, a visual artist, who helps move the plot forward, but whose personal life and art are of great interest as well. I was especially impressed with the depiction of Jane's younger brother Henry. His struggle with addiction and recovery, and his sister's sense of responsibility for him, is central to understanding her and her family. His is a different kind of "longing" and I was left thinking a lot about him and his relationship to his sister. I believe that Ms. Chung has succeeded wonderfully at writing a book about interesting men who deserve our attention and who have something to say to us, both male and female readers.

Jane's mother, pointedly referred to as Dr. Lee even by her own children, is a complicated and difficult character. The author has written honestly about her and the damage she inflicts on her family, but I still found the description of the character respectful and ultimately understanding.

One reviewer has commented that Ms. Chung's exploration of the history of the Han family makes readers want to examine their own. I had that same sense. I felt that if I could provide Ms. Chung with stories about my own immediate and extended family, she could develop an exciting, descriptive narrative to help make sense of it all.

Sonya Chung's writing reminds me of Chekhov. I think it might be the development of character and family relationships through attention to small but significant details and events.

Another reviewer compares reading Long for this World to attending a photo display at a gallery, but in such a way that the reader is required to make the connections between the images displayed and any larger meaning of the book. I agree that we are treated to a number of very vivid images but I feel that the novel is also tightly structured and very effective in narrating a larger, comprehensive story.

The title is wonderful and promises what the book delivers. The cover photo of the hardcover edition is also perfect and this visual image conveys the tone precisely. I am sure it will entice some readers to the book.

Long for this World is a fascinating and compelling read. I am recommending this book to friends and I eagerly look forward to reading more of Sonya Chung's work in the future.

Thought Provoking and Entertaining
By nycwriter
Long for This World is bold and subtle, thought-provoking and entertaining. Page after page is filled with writing that made me think: Aha! I know that feeling, but could not articulate it (at all, let alone as beautifully), revealing the many layers that can course through a single moment.

The story of the Korean American Han's and the Korean Han's covers a panoramic distance across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Yet the story is not sprawling, it is deep and intimate, filled with the thoughts and feelings of an array of distinct and beautifully rendered characters.

Although the main character Ah Jin (Jane) is a war photographer, and there are vivid scenes that take the reader into the war zone, the most dangerous moments in the story seem to occur during ordinary interactions; between a daughter and her mother, a sister and her brother, a husband and a wife. Much of the story takes place in a small town in Korea inland from the ocean, where "...there is little that happens here in the country, and yet the air moves, it is dynamic, taste and texture and life happen in the breeze." Although a lot happens in this story, we also get to experience what happens "in the breeze." Just like a stop-motion movie that shows a field of flowers blossom in the springtime, we get to see the inner shifts and changes inside the characters, the story takes us places we can't ordinarily go in real life.

Even minor characters are rendered with finesse. Dr. Lee, as Jane calls her mother, is a remote woman, who (ironically) is more devoted to her psychiatric career than to her family. Jane is not close to her mother, yet she tries to imagine what her mother's life was like when she grew up. She imagines that Dr. Lee's mother was probably a woman chasing after social status and romantic affairs, disregarding her child, who later takes on the same self-absorbed traits. Through the thoughts of her daughter, even the selfish Dr. Lee is portrayed with complexity and tenderness.

As I began to reach the end of Long for This World, I wished with every turning page that there were more pages (not less) ahead. In those final pages I was not prepared for how the story had grabbed me, how much I cared for the characters and wanted to spend more time with them, and how the final events would sweep over me emotionally.

In Long for This World Sonya Chung beautifully captures the contradictions, the weaknesses and strengths, the love and hate that swirl together within people and within relationships, and that meld beautifully in this book, leaving the reader richer for having shared in this story.

Profound and affecting
By Indu Singh
Long For This World is a family saga, but it's not just a simple "story of us." The novel has an unforgettable plot that places the story in many realities, geographic and metaphysical. Although it explores the missed opportunities and tragedies of two branches of the Han family (one in America, one in Korea), Chung has deftly placed the story in the larger backdrop of the human family. The first death the protagonist Jane experiences is one in a distant Syria and it's part of her job as a photojournalist. She doesn't know it, but it will be one of several deaths in her life...each getting increasingly closer to home.

I agree with the other reviewers at this site who compared Chung's writing to Murakami and Chekhov. Chung's writing contains the crepuscular magic of Murakami and the fine-tuned alertness of Chekhov. She has a keen eye for human relationships and the ties that bind. Her probing gaze delves into the different rooms in the human heart, rooms of desire, despair, longing, escape, indifference, and discovers that sometimes it's in the empty rooms--the rooms we deliberately leave empty, thinking them redundant--that our destiny lies.

Long after I finished this book I was haunted by the characters and the choices they made. Although Long For This World is a page turner, my advice is to resist the temptation to rush through it. I urge you to slow down and savour it.

Disappointingly unsubstantive
By LemonDrop
I really wanted to like this book as I am passionate about advocating for at-risk kids. A teacher group at my school has been assigned to read this book for a book study. Unfortunately, I found the book to be little more than an empty motivational speech. It left me with the same dissatisfaction I often get when I am forced to sit through presentations by motivational speakers: they pep up the crowd, use a lot of emotion, and make you feel temporarily on-board with whatever the topic may be. Then you go home and realize that there was nothing worthwhile beyond the vague generalizations.

It's not even that I disagree with some of the advice. I work with at-risk students in my regular classes and in some special needs classes designed for at-risk students. I do think it is important to greet kids by name, organize the room and materials to be welcomingly supportive, have high expectations, get to know and accept them. But the author does not really delve into practical strategies about how to achieve these goals. Turning around a student who has several years of poor school experiences goes far beyond asking them to recite a mission statement and posting motivational mantras and names of colleges on the walls.

I was also put off by the author's veiled potshots at teachers. He mentions that he has been solicited by principals to "fire up the teachers," giving the impression that teachers do not already care about students or work a zillion hours a week to make a difference. He mentions the schools and teachers of all three of his own children; in all cases there was a problem with the teacher. He states that his sons barely worked hard enough to graduate and that his daughters's teacher showed low expectations for her earning a C in a class. I have to say that I have also at times praised the efforts of a student earning a C. If former work was much lower or the student had experienced great difficulty with the content, a C could be an achievement. In fact, I tell my students what I told my own daughters: I expect you to do the best you can in every task. If you can say that you did that, I cannot ask for more.

Mr. Baruti seems to think that if we just "believe" in every student, that all of the other obstacles impeding student progress will magically disappear. He offered no real solutions or strategies for working with very difficult children. He vaguely excoriated teachers for not meeting the needs of students with "unique learning styles" but did not offer any further explanation. His other advice is similarly empty: be patient, understand them, show respect. In other words, if we just convince ourselves that they are all brilliant, the problem will be solved.

Finally, I resent seeing teaching compared to missionary work. I am a highly trained and educated professional. Expecting teachers to be charity workers allows the continuation of a system of low pay and poor working conditions. Yes, I care very much about my students, I work hard to meet their academic and developmental needs. But I do not have unlimited resources, time, or energy. We need better funding for schools, class sizes small enough to develop relationships with individual students, more counselors and social workers, extended hours with paid support staff, opportunities for students to participate in extra-curricular activities, and strategies for involving parents and families into the life of the school.

The back of the book says that the content is "replete with practical strategies." But frankly, I did not see them.

Far better for teachers looking for a well-researched and substantive guide to working with at-risk students is Reducing the Risk, Increasing the Promise by Dr. Sherrel Bergmann and Dr. Judith Allen Brough. I'm sorry to say that Closing the Attitude Gap just sent my attitude in the opposite direction.

Excellent Resource for all Educators
By J. Mccree
This is a great resource to assist us to deal with students in urban centers especially the male student who often cannot navigate the systems of the school building. Many of my co workers start the day off wrong by assuming the glare, cold stare or challenging look is personally directed to them. Yet as the book points out it is especially critical for Black and Latino male students that we can navigate the attitude of ourselves and the students. When Kafele says, "I am convinced that black males must have an "attitude of excellence before actually experiencing excellence." The first chapter addresses a norm that is critical for an educator's success climate and culture which also just happen to be core to the new Teacher Evaluation tool in New Jersey. So you can bet I will be developing text dependent questions to assist my close reading understanding of the text.So in effect I can practice what I preach and model what I teach. The book is such an invaluable tool I have both the digital version and text version.

Inspiring Book on Teaching Excellence
By Paul Buyer
Baruti Kafele's Closing the Attitude Gap is an exceptional new book and inspiring read on what excellence in teaching looks like. Kafele is a true educator and his character, principles, and values grab hold of you on every page.

What struck me the most when reading this book was the responsibility Kafele places on TEACHERS to ensure their students succeed and reach their full potential.

He breaks down this responsibility into five "strands": 1) the teacher's ATTITUDE toward students, 2) the teacher's RELATIONSHIP with students, 3) the teacher's COMPASSION for students, 4) the ENVIRONMENT the teacher provides students to learn, and 5) RELEVANCE in instruction based on a student's culture, history, and "story."

These 5 strands are beautifully discussed, and any teacher who is feeling burned out or is not waking up every day with a purpose to make a difference in students' lives will feel called out by the principal right away.

The most powerful concept here is that the attitude gap - which Kafele defines as "the gap between those students who have the will to strive for academic excellence and those who do not" - can be closed in the hands of a good teacher.

What I appreciate most from this book is that the author thoroughly covers all the bases when discussing the profession of teaching. So many valuable insights are addressed such as developing a classroom culture, having a passion for personal growth, goal-setting, student perception, and what it means to be a professional, just to name a few.

Finally, the "Reflective Questions" at the beginning of each chapter (unlike most books where the questions are presented at the end) really get you thinking about your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher, leader, and human being. These questions not only preview the material to be presented in each chapter, they provide a standard of excellence to work toward as you strive to grow and become the best educator you can be.

Life Among the Dead, by Lisa Williams

The highly anticipated memoir from the star of the hit series Lisa Williams: Life Among the Dead

When Lisa Williams was four years old, she told her parents about the spirits in her bedroom. Since those first sightings, Lisa has seen and communicated with thousands of people who have passed over, listening to their stories and delivering messages of comfort to the loved ones they left behind.

In Life Among the Dead, Lisa invites readers into her extraordinary life, from her childhood in Birmingham, England, where her grandmother -- also a renowned psychic -- encouraged her to respect and nurture her talent, to her decision to move to Los Angeles, where her smash-hit Lifetime television show quickly made her one of the world's most beloved mediums. Lisa shares memories of her earliest psychic experiences and her gradual acceptance of her gift, and recalls many of the amazingly accurate communications she has shared with believers and skeptics alike. In her compassionate, down-to-earth style, she reveals exactly what it's like to live surrounded by spirits every day, and she recounts the joy she feels in bringing solace to those who have lost someone dear and the insights she has gleaned about spiritual phenomena, hauntings, psychic healing, and the afterlife.

Warm, witty, and surprising, Life Among the Dead is a wonderfully intimate account of Lisa's life as a medium, healer, wife, mom, and TV star who has already won the hearts of millions, a woman with an astonishing gift for seeing beyond the ordinary and into a mysterious and fascinating realm.

Chapter 1

The Uninvited

I was three years old when I saw dead people for the very first time.

We were living in a flat in Birmingham, in Central England, our family's first real home, and I soon discovered that we weren't alone. Strange faces, balloonlike and oddly translucent, came floating in and out of the walls of my room, and because they were slightly blown up, as if filled with air, they seemed a little clownish. But there was nothing funny about them.

I went to tell my parents. "There are people in the walls of my room," I said.

"What people?"

"I don't know. All sorts of people."

Mom took me by the hand and walked me back. "Where?" she said.

"Well, they're gone now, but they were here a minute ago."

"You're making this up."

"No, I'm not."

"Who are they, then?"

"I don't know. Just people, some of them look like clowns."

"Clowns? It's just your imagination! Go to bed."

The next night, the faces were back. I went into the lounge and refused to return to my room. My parents were just about to go to bed and, unhappy at the prospect of another sleepless night, my father gave me an angry look and marched off. "If you want to stay on the sofa all night, that's fine, but I'm going to sleep."

I stared at him, even as he switched off the lights and left me in the dark, but feeling guilty, he returned a few minutes later and found me sitting there, still staring. I hadn't moved.

"Why are you such a defiant child?" he said.

"What's 'defiant'?" I asked, scowling.

He picked me up, carried me to bed, plunked me down, and stormed off without saying a word.

For the next few months, the drama continued, sometimes two or three nights a week. An endless array of faces, ghostly and insubstantial, would emerge from the walls, study me for a moment or two, even try to grab at me at times, then just as suddenly dematerialize. Some of them actually addressed me, but I could never make out what they were saying, and they scared me.

"What do they say?" Mom asked.

"I dunno, but one of them comes through the lightbulb and tries to yank my hair."

"Comes through the lightbulb?"

"I just see her arm."

"How do you know it's a girl?"

"Dunno," I said, shrugging my shoulders. "I just don't think boys pull hair."

Exasperated, my parents finally moved me into the spare bedroom, but the faces were back that very night. Bony old men. Angelic boys. Old ladies. Thin girls with pinched cheeks. I went to get my mother, to show her, but by the time we returned, they had disappeared.

"There is nothing there," she said. "It's just your imagination. Go to sleep."

After tucking me in, she curled up in bed with me and stayed until I fell asleep.

There were nights when I would lie in bed scared, begging the uninvited visitors to leave me alone. I'd bury my head under the covers, thinking they would go away if I couldn't see them. And other nights I'd shout at them, "Go away! This is my room! I don't like you!"

My parents were concerned, but they thought I just had a vivid imagination. This was thirty years ago and therapy wasn't an option in my family. We never really showed emotion, and seeing a therapist wasn't even in the realm of possibility, so they dealt with my complaints by ignoring them. And it worked! Whenever I mentioned the faces, they would roll their eyes and continue what they were doing. In time, I stopped talking about them altogether, and soon enough -- taking a cue from my parents -- I began to ignore the spirits. They still came, of course, but they didn't bother me anymore.

I also began to ignore my parents -- or at least that's the way it appeared. "Lisa! I'm talking to you! Are you listening to me?"

I would look up from my perch on the floor, where I was playing.

"What?"

"What is wrong with you? Are you deaf?"

As it turned out, I was hard of hearing. I had compensated for this defect, unknowingly, by reading lips, which I guess I'd been doing ever since words first began to make sense to me. If I didn't look at a person directly, I couldn't really make out what they were saying to me -- which was the same problem I had with my nightly visitors.

When I was five, Mom took me to Birmingham Children's Hospital, where we were told that the tubes to my ears were almost completely blocked. The surgeon cleaned them out and removed my tonsils and adenoids for good measure, and when I awoke I could hear just as well as the next person. This was wonderful indeed, but -- even better -- every afternoon at three the nurses showed up with big scoops of ice cream. I loved ice cream so much I didn't want to leave the hospital!

In the summer, I would play in the big grassy area in front of our building, waiting for the ice cream man to show up. When I heard him coming, I would shout up to the third-floor balcony, "MOM!!!" Moments later, a fifty-pence piece would come sailing off the balcony, tumbling end over end. I would watch like a hawk to see where it landed, then I'd grab it and hurry off to meet the ice cream man.

Except for the haunting faces, life was great, especially now that we had a home of our own. My mother, Lorraine, stayed home in those days to care for me, and my father, Vic, worked as a self-employed contractor. Previously, we had lived with my father's parents, Jack and Josie, in West Heath, Birmingham, They had a two-bedroom house with a lovely, long garden, and I'd run up and down the entire length of it tirelessly, urging my grandparents to look at me. My grandfather would always be out there, tending to his plants, and he always humored me by looking over.

During the cold winters, I would have snowball fights with my dad, then we'd go inside and huddle around the fireplace with the rest of the family. I especially remember Tuesday nights, because every Tuesday, without fail, Mom and Nanny Josie would go off to play bingo at the local bingo hall. I started to call my nan Bingo Nanny.

In 1976, two years after we moved into our own home, my brother Christian came along. I still remember watching my mother carry this bundled little creature into the house for the first time. I hoped his constant screaming would scare off the spirits, but they didn't seem to be troubled by the crying; in fact, they weren't even vaguely interested in him.

Eventually, tiring of hearing me complain about the visitors, my parents had me switch rooms with Christian, and my mother's mother, Frances Glazebrook, paid to have the room redone. She and my parents chose Holly Hobbie wallpaper. Holly Hobbie was a little girl in a blue chintz bonnet, and she was supposed to personify childhood innocence. She was cute but she had these eyes that freaked me out at night. Now I had to deal with the spirits and with Holly Hobbie, staring at me.

In September 1977, I went off to nursery school. I was four at the time. Mom took me the first day, but the second day I was sent off to join the parade of children who made their way down the path every morning, past our building. I tried to be brave about it, but when I got there, I saw that most of the other kids in my class had arrived with their mothers, and that one of them had actually brought flowers for the teacher. I was so upset that I ran all the way home in tears to find my mom. "You're supposed to walk me to school," I said, blubbering. "And you forgot to bring flowers for the teacher."

We went outside and picked a few flowers, and Mom walked me back to school. I gave the flowers to the teacher, who was most appreciative, and settled in. I enjoyed school, but I was shy, and quite insecure. I had a hard time making friends, and the year proved somewhat lonely for me.

I'd gotten used to the visitors by then, but I still huddled under the covers from time to time, trying to ignore them. One evening, just as Mom called me to dinner, a distinguished-looking gentleman, nicely dressed in a brown jacket and matching trousers, appeared in the hallway and followed me to the dining room. It was a whole gentleman, not just a face or an arm.

"Don't eat your peas," he said.

"Huh?" I said.

"Don't eat your peas or you'll die."

My dad looked at me, perplexed. "Are you talking to one of your imaginary friends?" he asked.

"He's not imaginary," I said, pointing in his direction. "Can't you see him?"

He looked toward the spot I'd indicated, but saw nothing. "Who?"

"There! He's standing right there!"

"Don't eat your peas," the man repeated.

"Okay," I answered.

"I don't see anyone," Dad said.

"He's telling me not to eat my peas or I'll die."

My parents thought I was making it up because I didn't like peas, which I didn't, but the man was standing there, clear as day. They didn't believe it, but they gave up trying to talk sense to me. "Okay," Mom said, rolling her eyes. "Don't eat your peas."

I recently found out that my dad's great uncle always had pie, chips, and peas for lunch, and one day -- a few years before I was born -- he choked on a pea and died. To this day I have a terrible phobia of peas.

My favorite food at the time -- the only food I cared for, really -- was a cheese sandwich. Not even grilled, mind you; just two slices of bread with cheese and salad cream, which is like mayonnaise with horseradish.

One night, there was a tomato on my plate and the man was back. "Don't eat the tomato, either. You could choke. Avoid anything with pips."

"Okay," I said.

"What?" Mom said.

"I wasn't talking to you," I said.

"There's nobody there," she said.

"He's right there, Mom! He told me not to eat the tomato."

"No, he's not. It's just a ploy to avoid eating your vegetables. He's just like your monkey."

She had a point there. I had an imaginary monkey, whom I'd named "Monkey." I took him everywhere with me because he was good company and nice to chat with. He was a talking monkey. We were inseparable. If I ever forgot him, I moaned until we went back to the house to get him.

The following year, when I was five, we moved into a council house in Tillington Close, in Redditch, Worcestershire, twenty miles south of Birmingham, and that's ...

An interesting look into the life of a talented lady
By ellen
One of my dear friends told me to turn on the TV to see someone amazing, and it turned out to be Lisa Williams. She had a show on the Lifetime Channel that featured her giving readings for people who wanted to contact spirit - and also she did 'housecalls' to homes with spirit activity. It was fascinating as it not only showed us how sessions were done, but let us into Lisa's life.
The 3rd season was not picked up by Lifetime. And that is a shame -
Lisa Williams wrote her biography, Life Among the Dead, and it is a refreshing look at the woman behind the metaphysical person. She gives a frank detailed look at her life, and how her gift was cultivated. Her grandmother was a famous psychic/medium, and she certainly inherited that gift.
It also goes into detail how she and her family came to America. Merv Griffin, who was a spiritual man, was instrumental in the show. Her validation to Griffin that she was the real deal was amazing.
Ms. Williams also does Reiki healing and her healings have been verified in her book. I also am familiar with Reiki and am glad she put this information in the book. There is little of the 'teaching' aspect in this book. Sometimes when you read something authored by a psychic/medium, they include little tidbits on how to meditate, or some insight into the metaphysical. While Ms. Williams does show us the various spiritual happenings, the only mention of 'the Other Side' is at the end, and that is an explanation of what happens when we 'cross over'. Whether or not you agree with her interpretation, if you are interested in expanding your knowledge, you will probably greatly enjoy this book.
One hopes that Ms. Williams will continue her path on the metaphysical. She is delightful and a gifted lady.
You will enjoy this book.
I'm sure Merv Griffin is proud.

Do You Want to Know Everything... About Lisa?
By Debra Morse
Fans of Lisa Williams, sit up and take note: this book is a must-have. And it goes without saying that the fiercely loyal folk who clamor for tickets to her sold-out appearances have already pre-ordered this book and are, as I type, curled up reading about their favorite medium and clairvoyant.

And well they should. This is a wonderful autobiography of a path that is only partway traveled. Lisa Williams reveals to us tales from her early life, her awakening to Spirit, and the start of her career as a professional medium. But it is much more.

It is also a testament to the pluck and courage of a single mother who at one low point had literally no money and was days from being on the street. And how, by listening to her heart, and summoning courage, she moved from that desperate moment to a life of love and security, and a vocation of healing other people from their own life traumas. In spite of health challenges, a near death experience, and the fears that we all face, Lisa has already accomplished more than many of us ever will in one life. And she is really only just getting started! Within a matter of a few years she moved from begging her mum for money to meet basic needs, to being driven to Merv Griffin's yacht to discuss a television show concept.

Lisa's story is a perfect illustration of the Laws of Attraction and Power of Intention that is being so intriguingly discussed in popular culture via media such as The Secret, What the Bleep Do We Know Anyway, and the Louise Hay classic: You Can Heal Your Life.

One of the things I particularly like about this book is Lisa's candid description of her own self doubt as she explored and grew in her mediumistic ability. I think any clairvoyant will identify and be comforted by reading of Lisa's faltering starts at reading; faltering because she was uncertain of herself, not because the data was faulty!

Full of anecdotes and photos, the book is a delightful read. I inhaled it in one long gulp this weekend. I adore this lady, and have found her to be not only irrepressible, but an inspiration. Go Lisa, go!

A Riveting Read
By Anna Bryde
Having only just very recently seen Lisa Williams a couple of times on TV, I was absolutely blown away by the accuracy of her readings. I have been a bit uncertain about what to believe about psychics. I've seen psychics giving rather inaccurate readings and not been convinced at all. That is until I switched on the telly one day and "accidentally" saw Lisa giving readings on the TV program "Life Among The Dead". Her book was released shortly after I that. I decided to order it immediately. It arrived on a Friday, in fact two of the same book arrived. I had accidentally ordered two books instead of one. As Lisa says, there are no coincidences.

When I started to read the book I could hardly put it down. I finished it on the Sunday morning (a day and a bit later). By the time I got to the last page I had tears in my eyes I was so moved. Lisa may be young but she has the wisdom of an old soul...

This is a beautiful book written by Lisa in a warm and friendly manner. She is natural, down to earth and has a great sense of humour. I felt as if Lisa is an old friend of mine, telling me this really exciting story about her psychic experiences and how it all came about.

This is also the story of a young woman starting out her life living a not-self life. Through trial and error, and through many incredibly painful experiences she gradually comes to realise why she has really come to this planet. Once she starts to live her life authentically her "luck" turns as if by magic. That is how The Power of Intention and The Law Of Attraction works. She has a lot of guts and she also has a wonderful spirit guide and other spirits to help her.

I was a bit dissapointed when the book came to an end, and I wanted to read more of her story. I hope she will write a follow up. I highly recommend this book.
