One of the greatest entertainers of our time candidly reveals her very personal sturggle with an issue so many of us face every day: self-esteem.
Janet Jackson emerged from the shadows of an already famous family to become one of the most beloved, recognizable, and influential performers in the world. But at what cost?
From the age of ten, when she made her acting debut on Good Times, Janet was told by Hollywood that she needed to slim down. Her well-meaning brothers, especially fun-loving Michael, teased her relentlessly until she began to believe that who she was wasn’t good enough. It was an idea that no amount of critical acclaim in television and film or, later, international platinum success in music could change.
Janet turned to food for comfort and escape. She developed a self-destructive pattern familiar to so many of us: fear and uncertainty led to bad feelings about herself and ultimately depression. The depression led to overeating. And her yo-yoing weight was painfully obvious in the bright lights of the entertainment world.
It has taken Janet most of her adult life to come to terms with who she is. But she has finally broken free of the attitudes that brought her down and has embraced realistic goals that help her eat better, exercise better, feel better, and ultimately be better.
This book is about meeting those challenges that face all of us. With candor and courage, Janet shares her painful journey to loving herself. She addresses the crazy rumors that have swirled around her for most of her life, shines an intimate light on her family, and pulls us behind the velvet rope into her unforgettable career. She also shares lessons she has learned through contact with friends and fans and reveals the fitness secrets she has learned from her trainer. Finally, her nutritionist, David Allen, unveils the wholesome, delicious recipes and lifestyle-changing tips that helped Janet get in shape—mind and spirit, heart and soul.
True You is a call to tune in to your own fundamental wisdom, to let go of the ugly comparisons, and to understand that who you are, the true you, is more than enough.

“I’m loved, I’m valued, and I’m capable of achieving balance in my life. I can learn to eat well. I can exercise. I can express gratitude for the simple act of being able to breathe in and breathe out. I can move away from darkness and depression to light and hope. I can be happy with who I am, not what I should be, or what I might have been, or what someone tells me I must be.
I am me, the true me; you are you, the true you—and that’s good. That’s beautiful. That’s enough.”

This is why I love her
By Tanika L Carroll
I cannot begin to tell you how much I love Janet. I can't express enough how much this book is already making me feel better about me. I know exactly what Janet has gone through, which is why I wanted this book. I can see all of her movies, I can read all the magazine articles on her, I can even listen to her music all day long, and it doesn't compare to actually reading from her own words her own soul exactly what she's been going through once the cameras are off. I'm still reading the book because I just got it now but I had to be the first to review it. I love this book. It's such therapy for me. I still at the age of 32 have issues with myself and I know this book will help me. Please read it. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Finding the True You
By Cass
When hearing that Janet Jackson was writing a self-help book , I thought oh shes just using this to increase her popularity. She has no real problems except which country to go to and which store to drop a couple thousand in. Looking at her, I saw nothing but an extremely beautiful woman with money and talent and fame. I saw that mega watt smile which could light up a room even through a photograph. I saw happiness and confidence. I saw her as something that is almost impossible for any one person to be, PERFECT. I became so elated to know that Janet didn't think of herself as perfect and that behind that mega watt smile dwelled something deeper, something less perfect and more realistic. Throughout the book, I myself shouted "hey that happened to me or dang Janet I've been there too". I loved her openness and I adore her open mind. The book carries the spirit of hundreds of thousands of men ,women and children who have or had that battle with learning to love ones self and being happy with who you are flaws and all. Janet's spirit throughout the book is overwhelmingly bright, realistic and incredibly optimistic. She does talk openly about her feelings leaving herself completely bare for the world to read. The childhood teasing that stuck with her, dealing with her constant fluctuating weight and feelings of unworthiness. Janet Jackson has done interviews about the book saying that "its not an autobiography" but you do get a grasp of what kind of person she is and where shes coming from. She gives so much insight into who she is now, who she was yesterday and who she wants to be tomorrow. The stories she added in the book from fans and friends give that "chicken soup for the soul" type of feel, very relatable and thought provoking. I loved the pictures throughout the book and the recipes were a great touch. I love that her nutritionist David Allen added his beliefs and advice to those going through those difficult to win weight battles. This book has shown me that no matter where we are in life, that our pain will not disappear until we face it and deal with it whether its a weight issue or past mistakes or even self-esteem issues stemming from childhood. It's also given me a new outlook on life, love and myself. Janet Jackson fan or no fan this is a really great book on self esteem and weight. I only wish the book was longer.True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself

Wish There Was More...
By luv2bhealthy
I really like Janet Jackson and was hoping to read something about what makes her who she is. This is definitely not an autobiography. She talks about her life without revealing much. It is mostly about her struggles with weight and having had depression. I am not trying to be critical because she is obviously a very private individual; however, she pretty much said the same thing thoughout the book which was trying to convey the emotional impact body image had on her and her relationships without really opening up about either. She told stories or printed fan letters of those who, because of a particular issue in their life, identified with her music because she wrote music that reflected what was going on in her life at that time.
Perhaps she felt as though she could help others who are struggling with their weight or with depression, but there are no clear answers in her book. There is a plug for her nutritionist, David Allen. There are some recipes by a chef. She talks about having therapy. But other then needing to stay balanced in your life, there were no real revelations. I was disappointed because I really wish there had been more.
