About the Author
Dr. Pérsida Himmele is an Associate Professor at Millersville University in southeastern Pennsylvania. She has served as an elementary and middle school teacher, a district administrator, an English language learner program consultant, and a public speaker on issues related to student engagement and teaching in diverse classrooms. She has lived, taught, and studied in New York, California, and Pennsylvania, becoming actively involved in advocating for the passage of educational policies and funding formulas for the betterment of urban schools and English language learners. She earned her Ph.D. in Intercultural Education from Biola University and her Masters in Elementary and Bilingual Education from SUNY Buffalo. In addition to several articles, she and her husband, William, are the authors of the ASCD bestseller Total Participation Techniques: Making every student an active learner, and The Language-Rich Classroom: A research-based framework for teaching English language learners.
Dr. William Himmele is an Associate Professor at Millersville University in southeastern Pennsylvania. He has served as an ESL teacher and a Speech Pathologist, a higher education administrator, an international consultant and a speaker on issues related to increasing student engagement and teaching English language learners. He served as the coordinator for the graduate ESL teacher certification program at Millersville University and has been an educational program consultant for several schools in various countries seeking to improve their school programs. He has lived, taught and studied in New York, California, and Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. in Intercultural Education and his Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Biola University. He and his wife, Pérsida, are the authors of several articles and the ASCD bestselling book, Total Participation Techniques: Making every student an active learner, as well as the ASCD book, The Language-Rich Classroom: A research-based framework for teaching English language learners.
Keely Potter is a National Board Certified Teacher who currently teaches Language Arts to 5th through 8th graders at Dodson Branch School in Jackson County, Tennessee. Half of her time is spent in the role of "Master Teacher" which allows her to work with teachers in an instructional coach setting. Prior to teaching in her current rural district, Keely was a teacher, a literacy coach, and a reading specialist. She has also served as a professional developer, and as a literacy consultant which she continues to do. Most of her 21 years of teaching experiences have been in an urban setting, where we observed her weaving the same literary magic that she now currently performs in a rural setting. She was a contributor to our former book, Total Participation Techniques: Making every student an active learner, and served as an instrumental consultant on this project. As such, her "stamp" can be felt throughout this book and we are so thankful for that. Her passions lie in supporting a culture of inquiry in teachers' learning communities, and in encouraging all students to see themselves as lifelong writers, who lose themselves and find themselves in the act of writing.

Glad I Read It

I read the sample online which was the first chapter. After getting really excited about the beginning, I ordered the book. The rest of the book is good, worth reading, but the best for me was the opening chapters. I have read similar sections in other books that seemed more cohesive, more complete. It would be a better value at say $9.99.

A must read for teachers across all content areas and all grade levels

After several years of struggling to engage reluctant readers and enduring pressure from administration to "teach to the test" in order to increase student achievement, this book has reignited my love of teaching literacy. It offers so many practical ways to foster the highest levels of critical thinking and metacognition in the classroom. It is a must read for teachers of all content areas and all grade levels! It provides reproducible templates that can be displayed in the classroom as well as interactive student copies. These easy to implement and simple to plan/prep techniques are beneficial for the entire spectrum of learners including on-level and above level readers, students with various leaning styles and multiple intelligences, English language learners, and students with special learning needs, including students with learning disabilities. I am beyond excited to incorporate these invaluable techniques in my classroom this year to facilitate my students' deeper interactions with text that will authentically increase student engagement, student achievement, and motivate reluctant readers!
