Worth buying, even if you read the website

I make it a point every Monday to read the AV Club's new Inventory. These pop-culture lists are almost always interesting, even if I'm not necessarily interested in the subject at hand. When they hit on a subject that does interest me (such as the list of great movies that are too upsetting to see twice), it's absolutely fascinating.

I debated whether or not to buy the book; my main reason to buy it was for the book-only content: guest lists by people including Andrew W.K., Patton Oswalt, John Hodgman, and others. The guest lists are pretty disappointing, on the whole; they certainly don't hold up to the quality of the AV Club's writing, and many of them are not even in the spirit of the AV Club Inventory. (The first one, by Robert Ben Garant, is a simple list of gross-out moments from movies. It's not particularly witty or interesting; any blog commenter worth his "firsties" could have come up with it. Sorry, Mr. Garant; you're far from alone.) The only guest list writer who really gets it is Patton Oswalt; his list is smart, insightful, and funny.

But really, the suckiness of the guest lists is my only complaint (and you'll see, I didn't even ding the book a star for it). I bought this book for my Kindle, because it's a great thing to have in portable form and be able to read in bits and pieces while waiting around. It would also be a great book to buy and keep in the bathroom or nightstand; it lends itself perfectly to being read in small doses.

Next time, AV Club, skip the guests and give us more of your own writing!

If you were an alien from another galaxy needing a crash guide to the underpinnings of US pop culture, you couldn't find a better guide then The Onion's new book, Inventory. I have always enjoyed the A.V. Club reviews of music, movies and books in "America's Finest News Source." They may be hip and ironic but their analyses are always insightful. Now here is a catalog of that department's occasional groupings. Enjoy such things as "6 Keanu Reeves movies somehow not ruined by Keanu Reeves," "26 songs that works as short stories," "15 Dr. Seuss characters that sound like sex toys, "5 essential books about film," "25 sure signs that a sitcom is terrible," etc. etc. Unless you are a big fan of movies about dancing or terminal illness, this book will send you to Netflix or your local DVD rental store without fail.

Plus it got me into the library site. Let's face it, most bookstores have long forgotten Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book and Tom Robbins's Even Cowgirls Get the Blues both adroitly featured here in "14 must-read books for aspiring young rebels." And what about Kurt Vonnegut. He formed our lives. Inventory reminds us how he wrote in Mother Night, "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." If nothing else this compilation shows us that we have not progressed as much as we like to think. We just conveniently forget the old contexts. The A.V. gang isn't letting us. Some of their smart-ass gives way to the profound. Stop for a minute and think of books or movies that you think define the decades of the past, then take a look at their lists and the rationale for each. Here's a snippet on Pulp Fiction, for example, "The twentysomethings who watched Pulp Fiction dozens of times over weren't just looking for cool movie characters, they were returning repeatedly to a cinematic universe that imbued the detritus of their youth--the theme restaurants, the movie quotes, the meaningless banter about trivia--with meaning."

Though there is depth, the scope of material is limited (to the media as high art and beautiful trash). I don't see this as a shortcoming, but rather as a challenge to the rest of us to think and talk and write about our lives instead of being satisfied with the usual gloss. Inventory's format is fun, assessable, and always stimulating. I like the "heaven" and "hell" listings across the top and bottom of very page contrasting "RSS feeds" with "pop-up ads"; "New Yorker cartoons" with "New York Post headlines"; "wood" vs. "particleboard." This volume has an honored a well-deserved, permanent place in my bathroom. It's too good not to go back to. There's even a section titled "50 list ideas we rejected for this book." I'm sure our interplanetary traveler would have enjoyed, "Hey, its Harvey Keitel's penis: 5 films with uncomfortable nude scenes."

When Does A List About Entertainment Becomes The Entertainment?

Americans are list crazy. There is no use denying it, and it's especially true when it comes to pop culture. We are endlessly categorizing songs, movies, TV, books, etc... in arbitrary and meaningless ways. Well, no one does arbitrary and meaningless like the AV Club! In this post-modern twist where the list about entertainment becomes entertainment in and of itself, the AV Club has assembled the delightfully skewed "Inventory." This volume contains lists and nothing but lists. It's great to read straight through, as a conversation starting coffee table book, or it's especially practical as a bathroom read. Oh come on--I'm sure the AV Club probably intended it for just such a sit down session!

Some lists are quite amusing, others enlightening. On the amusing side, one of my favorites was "15 Dr. Seuss characters that sound like sex toys" and another is "25 sure signs that a sitcom is terrible." On the more informative side, we've got "13 particularly horrible fast-food innovations" and "16 plus books based around odd literary conceits." There are tons more--these are just a few samples to explain the randomness of the inclusions. Some lists will resonate with you more than others--it really all depends on your primary interests. But if the book sounds appealing by this description--chances are you're going to like it.

A few celebrities also weigh in with "guest" lists. I always love Amy Sedaris and she's here--but strangely it's "Weird Al" Yankovic's list of Mad Magazine sound effects that stood out. A fun book, "Inventory" is simply entertainment for the sake of entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. You may forget about it soon after reading it--but it's definitely good for a laugh. And you may also find a book, movie, or song that you hadn't known about--so that's a plus!

Practical Tips for Teaching Boys with Learning Difficulties

The author mentions the innate differences between boys and girls, but does not dwell on them. Rather, she sees a wide range of behaviors among both boys and girls. She believes that boys often don't do well in school because they consider learning "white" and "feminine", because they have a fear of failure, etc.

She suggests that teachers need to develop a trusting relationship with these students, so that they overcome their fear of failure and inadequacy. Troubled boys want to know that they matter, that they are welcome in the classroom, etc. Consistency in enforcing discipline is important, or else the boy may see the teacher as weak. Communication with the boy should be positive, and not critical of performance.

To overcome the emotional immaturity of certain boys in impulse control, the teacher should give them a warning about an upcoming change in activity. This will make it easier for the boys to transition to that activity. The teacher should also give effective directions, as tabulated on page 120 of the book.

Although this book is not about cooperative learning, Cleveland describes several forms of it. It allows boys to socialize in a positive learning environment.

Teaching Boys Who Struggle In School

As a retired former middle school and high school administrator, teacher and coach, I read Kathleen Cleveland's book with great interest. Helping students who struggle in the disciplinary, social, and academic arenas has always been my calling. To the many overworked teachers, fellow administrators, coaches, beleaguered parents and students, who now may be parents of their own kids, I want to recommend that you read this book now.

My advice to administrators, teachers, coaches and parents was always to "work your magic." Boys struggling with learning difficulties responded to those who understood their needs. Kathleen Cleveland has captured the essence of how to develop crucial relationships between student and teachers (and parents). This book contains so many revelations about effective teaching - from the unexpected connections between student/teacher style dynamics, to the harsh consequences of the Boy Code, to the incredibly moving examples from teachers on the front lines, to the smorgasbord of solutions to take and adapt - Cleveland offers new hope and a fresh perspective that has been missing in this field for some time.

In this book you will find the kind voice of an expert educator who "gets it." Whether on the playing field, in the classroom, at the dinner table or facing a crisis from which there seems to be no return, I have always felt that the respectful relationship and the dynamic of understanding and compassion has to be at the very heart of making a difference. For me, she also dispels the mistaken notion (obvious to any educator in the field) that a one-size-fits-all approach works when dealing with boys and underachievement.

ASCD really hit upon a gifted and insightful writer with Kathleen Cleveland.

I appreciated her very clear and thoughtful look at this issue -- finding ways to address a problem without sensationalizing it or buying into a crisis mentality. Her ideas are clearly presented and user friendly.

In 2000, police descended on the British territory -- a lump of volcanic rock hundreds of miles from the nearest inhabited land -- to investigate an allegation of rape of a fifteen-year-old girl. They found themselves speaking to dozens of women and uncovering a trail of child abuse dating back at least three generations.

Scarcely a Pitcairn man was untainted by the allegations, it seemed, and barely a girl growing up on the island, home to just forty-seven people, had escaped. Yet most islanders, including the victims' mothers, feigned ignorance or claimed it was South Pacific "culture" -- the Pitcairn "way of life."

The ensuing trials would tear the close-knit, interrelated community apart, for every family contained an offender or a victim -- often both. The very future of the island, dependent on its men and their prowess in the longboats, appeared at risk. The islanders were resentful toward British authorities, whom they regarded as colonialists, and the newly arrived newspeople, who asked nettlesome questions and whose daily dispatches were closely scrutinized on the Internet.

The court case commanded worldwide attention. And as a succession of men passed through Pitcairn's makeshift courtroom, disturbing questions surfaced. How had the abuse remained hidden so long? Was it inevitable in such a place? Was Pitcairn a real-life "Lord of the Flies?"

One of only six journalists to cover the trials, Marks lived on Pitcairn for six weeks, with the accused men as her neighbors. She depicts, vividly, the attractions and everyday difficulties of living on a remote tropical island. Moreover, outside court, she had daily encounters with the islanders, not all of them civil, and observed firsthand how the tiny, claustrophobic community ticked: the gossip, the feuding, the claustrophobic intimacy -- and the power dynamics that had allowed the abuse to flourish.

Pitcairn Island was first settled more than 200 years ago by Fletcher Christian and other mutinous crew members of the HMS Bounty, along with several Polynesian women from neighboring islands; the community has always been small, but a mythology has built up around it as a remote, idyllic paradise. Pitcairn is thoroughly civilized, agrees Marks, a British journalist based in Australia, except in one respect... children were almost routinely raped and assaulted. In 2004, Marks was one of just six journalists allowed on Pitcairn to cover the trials of several islanders accused of repeated sexual abuse of teenage and preadolescent girls; her eyewitness accounts of the proceedings, and the hostility of Pitcairners, still subject to British laws, who believed their entire society was under persecution by the outside world, is gripping. She systematically demolishes the argument that Pitcairn was a different culture, where underage sex was the norm, and considers why outside observers—from the British government to local schoolteachers and priests—let the abuse continue unchecked for decades. The crimes are disturbing enough, but the Pitcairn communitys rallying around its most brutal sexual predators, and their relatively light punishment, is a truly unsettling story, even in Markss restrained retelling. Kathy Marks grew up in Manchester, England, and studied languages. She has been a journalist since 1984, working first for Reuters news agency and then for national newspapers in Britain, including the Daily Telegraph and The Independent. Since 1999 she has been based in Sydney as The Independent’s Asia-Pacific Correspondent, reporting from Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, East Timor, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, and the South Pacific. She has covered major stories around the region, including the post-independence violence in East Timor in 1999, the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings, the civil war in Indonesia’s Aceh province, the Indian Ocean Boxing Day tsunami in 2004 and the 2006 Java earthquake. In 2004 she was one of six international journalists who travelled to Pitcairn Island for the child sex abuse trials.

Fascinating Account of the Tragedy that Occurred on Pitcairn Island

I have been fascinated with Pitcairn Island since I first saw Mutiny on the Bounty. I had visions of an island paradise. I then heard about a sexual abuse scandal on the island at one point but the news did not spend much time on it so I did not learn much. Then I saw this book.

While Lost Paradise first and foremost is a book about the horrible sexual abuse and child molestation scandal that occurred on the island it also gives the reader an understanding of how the mutineer's legacy led to this modern day tragedy. The author does a great job in interweaving the stories of a modern day trial on an isolated, remote island of approximately 50 people, most of who were relatives of the mutineers who decided to make the deserted island their home in 1790.

In a moving chapter called "Reaping a Sad Legacy Since Bounty Times" the author explains that after the mutiny Christian returned to Tahiti. After inviting some Tahitians (mostly women) on board for a party Christian cut the anchor cable. One woman jumped overboard and six older woman were left of on a nearby island but a dozen women including a girl of 14 were left for 15 men. She writes "Such is the basis on which Pitcairn was established: women abducted and shared out like rations of rum, then held captive, effectively, on a remote island 1,300 miles from home." Some 10 years later only one mutineer was left alive (as well as most of the women and the children fathered by the other men) because of infighting and illness.

In another chapter called "Lord of the Flies" the author looks at what happens when a small group of people create their own society on a deserted island. She compares the culture to other isolated islands.

I want to stress that this information is intertwined with the stories of those on trial and the victims as well. The information about the trial and life on modern day Pitcairn Island is well documented and seemingly fair.

In order to make this book as good as it is the author needed to be part criminal trial reporter, part historian and part anthropologist. She was all three and more. This is a fascinating book about a terrible abuse scandal on isolated island founded by famous mutineers.

Great tale though too redundant and narrow in scope

Remote islands are fascinating case studies given that the evolution of species and culture are not nearly as affected by the diversity of nearby populations since there are relatively none. This can often lead to an accelerated rate of evolution of an island's given population with startling results. With Lost Paradise, the subject is how the transplanted group of Bounty mutineer men who kidnapped some Tahitian women were able to create a sustainable society along with the mutations that followed from what advanced or even many primitive civilizations would define as evil.

Kathy Marks has plenty of extraordinarily horrendous material to work with as she describes a society of mutinous kidnappers whose present day progeny end up sexually abusing other families' daughters while turning a blind eye to the abuse of their children. Mark's describes the descent into an extreme form of patriarchy based on the conditions and violence experienced when the Island was first settled. Marks also does a great job of insuring we are able to understand this horror without gratuitous descriptions of the acts. All in an environment that on the surface currently appears to be not much different than other small, culturally British societies that are not as isolated.

Mark's background as a working journalist and the standards for intellectual honesty used here are convincing, much to the dismay of the supporters of this patriarchal society that would prefer the world was not aware of the horrors their women were forced to undergo as a de facto rite of passage. In fact one of the most fascinating perspectives of this story is that most Pitcairners perceive the abusers as the victims, not their wives, sisters, or daughters, who are frequently perceived as traitors.

While I recommend the book given the story and stock I place in Marks' integrity to accurately convey the story, the book itself has two major flaws that limit its impact (due to readability) and narrowness of the perspective.

Marks is excruciatingly thorough in reporting the tale of many of the victims who are still alive in terms of who did what to whom, including those who've since moved away from Pitcairn Island. I would say to the point of stale repitition. This is especially evident after the trial verdicts where Marks spends dozens of pages piling on accounts of abuse in spite of the fact I believe she's already provided ample accounts leading up to the trial verdicts. These dozens of pages could have been easily cut with no loss of perspective.

Soon into the book it becomes self-evident to the reader that the true tales on Pitcairn eerily parallel the classic novel Lord of the Flies (50th Anniversary Edition). Mark's does an excellent job of exploring those parallels in a chapter of that name a couple of dozen pages past the trial verdict. It would have been a far better book if Marks had deleted all the tales between the verdict and this chapter. Marks could have then followed the Lord of the Flies (50th Anniversary Edition) chapter with a chapter or two of perspective based on interviews from sociologists and cultural anthropologists to provide some functional expertise and a broader context to the story. Instead we are left with a lot of great tale, told far too redundantly with no overarching perspective beyond the fact that the banality of evil requires our constant diligence.

Pitcairn, Hell on Earth

Kathy Marks, the author of "Lost Paradise" was one of only six journalists allowed access to Pitcairn and who covered the sensational trials of several influential Pitcairn inhabitants, prominent men who were accused of the most abhorrent crimes - that of sexual abuse of young girls on the island.

Pitcairn Island has historic significance going back generations, as it was the island that became home to Fletcher Christian and other mutineers from the HMS Bounty. Today, it is home to about 50 descendants of the early settlers and until recently, was viewed as a sort of paradise on earth, an idyllic island, remote and peaceful. Little did the general public know of the dark secrets concealed for generations by the island's inhabitants, and even those from the outside world who were privy to what was going on - that of the systematic sexual abuse of young children, condoned by many of the inhabitants, and seen as part of the island culture. The horrors finally came to light when one young teenage girl alleged rape and the world discovered Pitcairn's horrific secret.

Reading this book is like "The Lord of the Flies" come alive - how a remote society, isolated from the outside world, developed close kinship and strong bonds, and where the strong preyed upon the innocent, almost 'cannibalistic' in nature, where grown men, so-called leaders of others systematically indulged in the violation of innocent children. Worse still, is the revelation of the cult of secrecy surrounding the abuse, where the violated have no voice and rights to decry the abuse, instead are forced to endure and keep silent.
Kathy Marks does an excellent job painting a compelling portrait not only of the case proceedings, but also of the culture of the Pitcairn Islanders and the foundations of the society that allowed for these abuses to go on for so long, unchecked.

I found those who abetted these criminals extremely abhorrent - justifying the abuse as part of the island culture of breaking them in? The attitude of indifference is simply appalling. I wonder at the years of therapy needed to get the victims over their trauma.

This is horrific reading, but very compelling, and I for one could not put the book down. Highly recommended.

In the introduction to his first collection of short fiction since Everything's Eventual (2002), King credits editing Best American Short Stories (2007) with reigniting his interest in the short form and inducing some of this volume's contents. Most of these 13 tales show him at the top of his game, molding the themes and set pieces of horror and suspense fiction into richly nuanced blends of fantasy and psychological realism. The Things They Left Behind, a powerful study of survivor guilt, is one of several supernatural disaster stories that evoke the horrors of 9/11. Like the crime thrillers The Gingerbread Girl and A Very Tight Place, both of which feature protagonists struggling with apparently insuperable threats to life, it is laced with moving ruminations on mortality that King attributes to his own well-publicized near-death experience. Even the smattering of genre-oriented works shows King trying out provocative new vehicles for his trademark thrills, notably N., a creepy character study of an obsessive-compulsive that subtly blossoms into a tale of cosmic terror in the tradition of Arthur Machen and H.P. Lovecraft. Culled almost entirely from leading mainstream periodicals, these stories are a testament to the literary merits of the well-told macabre tale. (Nov.)

In King's latest collection of short stories (following 2002's Everything's Eventual), he presents 14 tales that range from the philosophically themed, to one in which the author gleefully admits to playing with the gross-out factor ("A Very Tight Place"), to "The Cat from Hell," which makes its hardcover debut some 30 years after its original publication as part of a contest in Cavalier, one of the gentleman's magazines that put food on the table in King's early years as a writer. In his introduction, King cites his recent stint as guest editor for the 2007 edition of Best American Short Stories as an impetus to return to the form in his own writing. Several of the works included here were written following that experience. Critics agreed that Just After Sunset showcases a matured and sophisticated Stephen King, one who eschews vampires and clowns in favor of more refined terrors—unraveling relationships, aging, and the decay of both body and mind. That's not to say that readers won't be frightened. With the exception of "The Cat From Hell," written in the 1970s, King composed these stories after his famous brush with death, and many critics touted them as some of his finest. As with most short story collections, a few pieces are uneven, and "A Very Tight Place" is not for the claustrophobic. However, there are some real gems here. "If most Stephen King novels are 800-page sides of beef, this short story collection is the filet mignon," concludes the reviewer from the Charlotte Observer.

Vintage Stephen King at his best. Master of the short tale.

First, I'm an avid Stephen King fan. I'm pretty sure I've read all of his books but I don't think I can say I've read every word he's written....but I have to be close. After reading Just After Sunset, I'm convinced that King's true talent lies in the short story/novella sphere. He is a master at developing stories and characters quickly and like a spider can spin his web with perfection. His novels, all of them, are worth reading. You won't be sorry having invested the time with any of them, but his true masterpieces are in his collections of short stories and novellas.

Just after Sunset is comprised of 13 stories, many published previously. For example, The Cat From Hell was originally published in 1977. King displayed, even then, his willingness to experiment with publishing. Originally, only the first 500 words of Cat From Hell were published in Cavalier. Readers were invited to finish the story and the completed work was published later the same year. The story has been published, revised, and then published again. The story was also used in Tales From the Darkside. Others, such as Willa are recent creations and are a treat for the mind.

"N" continues King's willingness to experiment in getting his stories out to the public in innovative ways. The short story "N" was the basis for the animated series of the same name.

Harvey's Dream, originally published in New Yorker in 2003, is a story of fathers, daughters, and dreams and is a read that will keep you interested throughout.

Of all the stories included in Just After Sunset, my favorite is Stationary Bike. Richard Sifkitz has a belated physical and learns that his cholesterol is extremely high; dangerously so. Like so many of his generation he decides to get a stationary bike to exercise and hopefully ride off his health problems. Unlike many of his contempories, however, Richard rides his workout machine. He rides and he rides and he rides. He decides to paint a mural in the room he rides in to give him something to look at while he's working out. As in all of King's work, the simple mural turns out to be unique and Richard's bike takes him on trips he really doesn't want to make. This is a riveting story and is worth the cost of the book by itself.

Other stories of note (my opinion only) are "The Things They Left Behind", "Graduation Afternoon", and "The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates".

I especially appreciated the last section, Sunset Notes, comprising King's own thoughts about each of the stories in the collection. I always like the special note he includes to readers at the end of many of his books.

King, Revitalized

Although I have never been an advocate of the view that Stephen King was losing his touch, this collection seems to offer a version of King with so much energy and creativity that some of his more recent works pale in comparison. It is an intense and generous sampler of short fiction that truly shows King at his best, whether you consider his best to be his horror or his more mainstream work.

"Willa," which provides a quiet, understated opener to the collection, is suspenseful, eerie, and creative. It also, in my opinion, offers a rather unique solution to what I will admit is one of King's problems: crafting realistic modern dialogue for his younger characters. (A problems that he seems to have largely eliminated in this collection, by the way, with the exception of his creative use of it here.) "Harvey's Dream" is also quiet. I found it far more unsettling than "Willa," however, as its depiction of ordinary marital unhappiness--already frightening, given its monotony and barely suppressed hatred--slowly evolves into a sharp, ice-pick intrusion of unfortunate foresight. "Graduation Afternoon" features a similar kind of transition from ordinary unhappiness to the outright horrific.

"The Gingerbread Girl" is one of the best stories in the collection. King shows a deft touch with Emily's characterization while still writing at a white-hot pace and bringing this particular reader to the edge of her seat. He takes enough time to build up Em's past and her attempts to outrun it before starting the clock with the arrival of the zealously psychotic Pickering, one of the best and most frightening villains in all of King's short fiction. Another standout is "N.," a Lovecraftian story of OCD and the outside dimensions, which, given its portrayal of the eroding veil of sanity between us and a massive, incomprehensible evil, will probably have you organizing your things into circles (just to be on the safe side). There's also the very short "New York Times at Special Bargain Rates," which artfully blends disaster, afterlife, and premonition (three of the collection's major themes) in just a few pages to produce a quiet ghost story that doubles as a tearjerker.

"Mute" is marred by the distracting eccentricity of the wife's crime (pulled from real life) and "Ayana," though a rare unsentimental exploration of miracles, is lackluster, as is "Rest Stop."

"Stationary Bike" will probably be a divisive story. In my opinion, it's best going into this not thinking of it as a horror story, and simply enjoying the ride (no pun intended) as Sifkitz's exercise efforts begin to extend into the unnatural. And the ending, whatever its faults in terms of resolution of suspense, is a valuable lesson in terms of dieting. "The Things They Left Behind," with which it share a similar tone, explores the aftermath of 9/11 without the slightest hint of exploitation. It's also an interesting story about survivor's guilt and how grief latches onto possessions.

Lastly (in the order of this review, that is, not in the order of the collection), there are the more gruesome entries of "The Cat from Hell" and "A Very Tight Place." These are probably the best recent examples of what is often called (tongue-in-cheek) "Klassic King," and one actually is: "The Cat from Hell" dates back to the eighties and was often anthologized but never collected by King himself. It balances the grotesque with the vaguely ridiculous so well that, at the ending, you're torn between screaming or laughing as a cat gains a particular type of revenge upon a hitman and, presumably, his animal-testing employer. "A Very Tight Place" is better and even more disgusting, and it's best not to eat immediately before reading it, as it features some very detailed descriptions of what it might be like to be trapped in an overturned Port-O-San. Like "The Gingerbread Girl," this features some almost unbelievable suspense and a likable, emotionally beleaguered protagonist in a horrific situation it's impossible not to imagine, but this is slightly marred by a particularly unsatisfying ending and some laughable dialogue from the villain.

I've described some problems with some of these stories, so why five stars instead of four? Easy. When these stories work, they're really firing on all cylinders: involving, frightening, and impossible to stop reading. If you like King, you can't pass this up; if you haven't liked him before, this might be a good place to start. Definitely worth the money and any sleepless nights that may result.

Still King

I'm a bit surprised - disappointed even - in the rather mediocre average review score for Stephen King's anthology, "Just After Sunset." While this collection of short stories is not steeped in the sensational terror and gore of King's earlier works (most of which I thought were terrific), "Sunset" reflects a more mature King - the master of words relying less on horror and more on the subtleties of ordinary people in extraordinary situations. I always found King a keen observer of culture and society - one of the best at capturing the most mundane details of ordinary life, and in King's case, weaving them into a dark fabric of fear that lures one from the familiarity of (a pet, a car, and friendly neighbor...) into unsettled and disturbing worlds, and epic battles of good vs. malevolence. All of which are reflected in this baker's dozen of darkness - twelve new and the "bonus" of "The Cat from Hell" - an early King tale that made it to the big screen in the 1990 movie "Tales from the Darkside". To the point, the contrast in style between the graphic and simple story lines of "Hell Cat", and the cleverly drawn irony of "Mute" could not be more pronounced. Both frightening, engaging, and entertaining reads, but where "Cat" is pretty much gothic horror, "Mute" is a cleverly drawn, sophisticated tale of suspense and murder that would fit well in a collection of Hitchcock.

I didn't find a bad story in the lot, but if I were to pick my favorites, in addition to the fiendish "Mute", I'd place the diabolically gross "A Very Tight Place" near the top of the list. Or the poignant "The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates" - an oft-told tale in many respects, but never replayed more beautifully than here. Another from that dimension into which we may pass after death is the opener, "Willa", a story that takes a few pages to get into, and may have you scratching your head at first. But when it delivers, it delivers a punch more sorrowful than it is terrifying. But perhaps the defining effort is "N.", a frightening drama that recalls earlier King themes, but twists them around into a gripping and thoughtful thriller bridging Stonehenge and crop circles with pastoral Maine landscapes.

Events like King's near-fatal accident in 1999 and 9/11 clearly had a huge impact on the author's life, and the imprint of these seminal events are very evident in these pages. If there is a common theme between these pages, it is individual reaction to unthinkable tragedy, tempered by King's own passage from near death. While King chose "horror" as his literary path to follow, I'm certain the strength of his prose would have placed him near the top of any genre. Not unlike Poe, King's "Cold damp winds, white skies and fleeing crows" evoke disturbing but familiar images - places we'd prefer not to be but revel in reading. So while this may not be "The Stand", it is not "Cell" either, but a collection of dark little gems that will again remind us how fortunate we are to have King, the rare author as talented as he is prolific.

About the Author
Myron Dueck is a vice-principal and teacher in School District 67 in British Columbia, Canada. He has previously taught in Manitoba and on the South Island of New Zealand. Over the past 17 years of teaching, Myron has had experience in a variety of subjects ranging from grades 3 to 12. As a teaching and administrative leader, Myron has been a part of district work groups and school assessment committees that have further broadened his access to innovative steps taken by others. He has presented his student-friendly assessment procedures to fellow educators in British Columbia, California, Idaho, Kentucky, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Washington, and Greece. Recently, Myron has presented in both Los Angeles and Chicago at the ASCD Annual Conference and has twice been published in Educational Leadership magazine.

I'd like to give this 3 1/2 stars

I'd like to give this 3 1/2 stars, because I think it is a good book for some, but will be less helpful for others. Dueck does indeed have some good ideas on assessment and he does a decent job of explaining how to implement them and does a better job of explaining why they are useful. The format of the book is easy to follow and even the personal stories that he occasionally interrupts with are not too distracting (I suspect in the book version they are off to the side, but in the Kindle version they tend to come in the middle of discussions). The thing I like most are the templates that he has created for ease of implementation for some of these ideas; that is primarily where my bookmarks lie.

However, I would not recommend this book if you are someone who keeps up-to-date with current professional literature. His ideas are good, but not new. I've read about them and the research he uses to justify them in other places. Even the reviewer before me points out that he had been using them for many years before this book was published. If you have an extensive professional library, you probably don't need to add this book to it. But if you are new to the profession and/or haven't kept up with current trends, then I think this book would be an excellent introduction to the practices he discusses.

Not in the Real World

There are a couple of good ideas in this book, but the majority of the ideas assume a lot about reality that simply do not exist. I agree that no one should ever issue grades for behavior, and I don't. However, Dueck's approaches to grading and homework reveal internal inconsistency, illogical constructs, and false notions of the real world. For example, Dueck argues that adopting his approaches will lead to reduced teacher work. How is that ever possible if students should not only have retests, but should have segmented retests supported by self-assessment sheets, all of which require teacher production, review, and grading? I believe in retests in certain situations. I more strongly believe—as Dueck does anecdotally—that student knowledge should be tested not necessarily just on paper, but also orally. But to allow a constant string of retests would more than double my time in test construction alone.

Dueck also states that only in the educational world do people take tests, and on that basis he questions the validity of testing procedures. No, he's wrong. I worked for decades in the "real world," and we are tested each and every day. Perhaps Dueck does not recognize such tests because they are usually all-or-nothing, high stakes tests, where if you don't reach a high degree of performance (proficiency or achievement in the education world), you're fired. Imagine a barista who does not show up to work. Does he/she "earn" half their salary? Of course not. Yet, Dueck says that everyone should get a score of at least 50% even if they do nothing. Imagine that this barista got only 70% of the orders right that day. Would the supervisor give the barista a warm thank you and issue a "C" grade? No, the barista would probably be fired. In fact, baristas need to get almost every single order right on a consistent basis to avoid being fired. In other words, they need to score an "A" to keep their jobs. Those are real world tests. Teaching kids that the real world will accept poor performance—or even no performance at all—is tantamount to lying to them and setting them up for failure in the real world.

Dueck also delves into the area of group work and grading for group work. One of the current mantras of the educational world is that students learn best in groups. Indeed they might in those school cultures that are relatively homogeneous, supportive, and honor achievement. In my experience, in any group project there are students who do nothing or virtually nothing and rely on the "smart" kids to do their work to get good grades. It's the coattail effect. In the real world, teams quickly ferret out those who do not do work, and they are given the choice of being responsible or being fired. It is common for supervisors to tell employees that if they don't fit with the team, they will be let go. You cannot fire or expel kids from school. Instead, the "performing" kids resent those depending on them and the "struggling" kids smugly accept their good grades for doing little or nothing. Dueck notes this problem, but then still encourages group work, project work, and creative group assignments because, as he notes, there is nothing that encourages or inspires kids more than being able to bounce ideas off each other and show off their work to their fellow students. Really? Has Dueck not had students who refuse to contribute to their groups, who refuse to explain their part in the project—or even to speak at all?

While Dueck means well, and perhaps his experience in his schools support his findings, the bases for his arguments are not rooted in the real world. I know what works with my struggling students, because when given the latitude and support to do so, I have improved their knowledge, their grades, and their self-esteem. When a school couples high behavioral standards with honest assessments of honest effort and then teaches them with more than just textbook reading and worksheet completion, students learn. If you award students for work they do not do or do not do well, then any level of "achievement" and self-esteem is hollow and will eventually crumble, especially when they discover that the real world is not as forgiving as they were led to believe.

A Practical and Effective Guide Based on What the Great Teachers Do

This book skillfully applies research in learning and motivation to traditional school courses. Myron Dueck outlines practices I learned to use in the second half of my teaching career when teaching Advanced Placement courses from the 1980s through 2008. These techniques resulted in greater student learning and motivation, eliminated student and parent complaints, and increased student respect for learning and for each other. The mean student pass rates increased from about the 70th percentile to the 90th percentile or higher. The number of students who scored 4s and 5s increased from a mean of about 50% to 80% or higher when I used these techniques. Of course, there is no substitute for the teacher's subject knowledge and teaching, motivational and relation al skills. Among the running jokes in the Black communities: the amusement and amazement we share watching a recording artist who makes music about violence, sex, and drugs receiving an award on television and saying, "I want to thank God." The contradiction seems glaringly obvious. How could a person who glamorizes greed, misogyny, and violence be religious or spiritual? We are all sitting there at home wondering, "How can the same person whose lifestyle and artistic expression emphasizes hatred, materialism, and raw intimidation, be standing there onstage wearing a diamond-encrusted crucifix?"

Actually, this phenomenon provides an important insight into the complexity of Black male spirituality. The disconnection between what this individual practices and what he preaches (or believes) is not difficult to recognize. But recognizing a man who, regardless of his flaws, yearns to experience the unconditional love that only a higher power can supply may be more challenging. The source of this apparent contradiction can be traced to the way in which many of us are first introduced to religion and spirituality.

We are encouraged to worship from early in our development. But few of us are introduced to the concept of character development as an expression of spirituality. Some of us have become so focused on our particular religion that we lose sight of achieving spirituality. Religion is the set of rituals and practices used to recognize, worship, and seek communion with God. Spirituality is the manifestation of this divine connection in one's daily life. Think of religion as the vehicle and spirituality the destination. The destination is the ability to see aspects of God in our lives and to exhibit this awareness as we interact with our environment.

Although it may be easy for us to detect the contradiction in what a musician on an awards show does and says, it is often difficult to recognize it in our own lives. I first became aware of my personal contradictions at age fifteen. I was a fiery, up-and-coming Black Nationalist who thought he could change the conditions of Black life by overpowering people with Black facts. Iremember recounting a ciphering (informal discussion) session that I had in the school cafeteria to one of my mentors. I was excited to explain to him how I had "blasted" all the brothers and sisters with my knowledge, and how stupid I made them look. He simply asked me, "What do we call each other?" I replied, "Brother and Sister." My mentor then asked me whether my actions seemed truly "brotherly." Without further discussion, I got the point. Just intellectualizing or articulating a concept wasn't enough. I also had to demonstrate it in my behavior. There it was staring me in the face: I was talking about being a "brother" but living out the life of a sarcastic smart-ass. It's not enough to talk the talk, you've got to walk the walk. From that point on I've used the same test as a measure for self-criticism and for my evaluation of society -- especially religion.

I was not raised in a religious household. Growing up between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, my family attended church primarily on two occasions: funerals and Easter. Unfortunately I attended my fair share of funerals. During the 1980s, Los Angeles was becoming the gangbanging and drug-slinging capital of the world. I had a father, uncle, aunt, and cousins involved in street life and they exposed me to some of the worst that the world has to offer.

Having these people in my life helped me to understand how young entertainers could embrace a lifestyle reflecting hatred while simultaneously professing a love for God. My family members were neither monsters nor soulless, uncaring people. They may have been into the streets neck deep, but they still wanted to be loved unconditionally. The love they received from family members was conditional and usually peppered with destructive criticism. But even in the midst of a destructive lifestyle, they turned to God for unconditional love.

But even as brothers seek this divine unconditional love, they who experience all the ugliness in the world still have issues with God. This is why so many Black males are absent from the church. Numerous articles, books, and community forums are held to address this matter. Truth is, some of these brothers are angry with God. Some are wondering where God was when they suffered abuse as little boys, or when they were mistreated as teenagers, or even now, when they are dismissed as shiftless adults -- regardless of their personal struggles and/or successes. Others wonder where God was when they were being racially profiled by police, discriminated against in the workplace, or even when they found out their lover was cheating on them.

We know this anger exists because of the way Black men murder one another without a second thought, the way Black males abuse girls and women, and the way we self-medicate with everything from alcohol to codeine-laced cough syrup, marijuana, and crack. The anger is manifest in our perpetual petty beefs, our judgmental attitudes toward other Black men, and our inability to constructively resolve conflicts among one another. The anger expresses itself in various other ways, too. Some Black men echo our oppressors and accuse fellow Black males of using racism as a crutch. Some may have enduring patience with other people who abuse and mistreat them, but have a short fuse when dealing with our Black brothers. These same attitudes can be found in men whether they were raised as Christian, Muslim, Hebrew, Buddhist, Humanist, African Spiritualist, or something in between. Indeed, this spiritual crisis is not merely a reflection of their character, but also of the religions and spiritual systems and institutions that claim to offer solutions to their problems.

In my own search for balance and centeredness I have rounded the bases of the world's most popular religions. At age fourteen, I left home plate and headed for Christianity as first base, joining a nondenominational storefront church congregation after attending services with an aunt. Like most young Black men, I wanted to have a strong relationship with God. During the devotional part of the service it was made clear that unless "you know, that you know, that you know" that if you died that instant you were saved and on the path to heaven, you risked burning in the fires of hell for eternity by not joining the church. I was not certain, so I joined. I went to new members classes and participated in youth activities. But, ultimately I found the experience to be unfulfilling.

I loved the fellowship and the message of hope the church preached and, yes, the music was incredible. I found an emotional release in the midst of community worship, but the generic sermonizing about God's power, grace, and vengeance missed me for the most part. As much as the pastor attempted to make biblical stories relevant to our daily lives, I still felt like he was talking about a time and place far removed from the reality I faced every day. Some brothers have issues with the church because of politics or other philosophical differences; I was too young to make those connections. I rather longed for something that spoke directly to my struggle as a young Black male trying to define my manhood, my Blackness, and my relationship with God in a constructive way.

At age fifteen, I left the Christian church for second base, the Nation of Islam (NOI). It was not an immediate transition. I spent several months in a kind of spiritual limbo. My experience as a Muslim awakened my spirit and my mind -- not necessarily the theology of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and Minister Louis Farrakhan -- but with the social and political message of Black self-determination.By this time my mother had relocated us to San Antonio, Texas, in hopes of providing my younger brother and me with a safer environment. As already stated, inner-city Los Angeles in the late 1980s was a war zone and the casualties were predominantly young Black men.

I learned about the Nation via its weekly publication, The Final Call. Prior to reading excerpts of speeches by Minister Farrakhan, I had never heard a Black man mix politics, economics, sociology, and religion into such a digestible cocktail. I responded to the NOI because it was unapologetically Black. The Nation combats the identity issues that plague Black males by telling us that we are "the makers, the owners and cream of the planet earth," and moreover, that Allah (God) is Black and wants us to reclaim our legacy as rulers of the earth. The Fruit of Islam (FOI), the men of the NOI, are structured in a hierarchical quasi-military fashion that fulfills our yearning for belonging to a structured group. The selling of newspapers, bean pies, and other products places Black men in a constructive posture within the community. Not everyone likes bean pies, but whenever they see the young FOI approaching in a suit and bow tie, they nevertheless show respect.

Religiously, I practiced the prayers, attended the services and observed Ramadan (a Muslim time of fasting). The ministers who officiated the Sunday meetings used both the Bible and Qur'an. They made these texts speak to my circumstance by interweaving passages from scripture with Black history, interpretations of economic exploitation, and critiques of contemporary leadership for failing to empower the Black community. I remained an active, faithful Muslim into my freshman year of college.

A combination of forces moved me to the next base and separated me from the Nation of Islam. During the early 1990s, the NOI was going through some administrative and organizational restructuring. I was forced to choose sides: whether to stay with the minister who introduced me to the teachings of the Honorable Elijah...

"Great Advice For Black Males To Help Themselves."

Kevin Powell's book, The Black Male Handbook is a collection of essays that provide insight and instruction on how black males can transform their lives from mediocrity and turmoil to success and peace of mind.

I like the fact that the book covers areas such as spirituality, health, finances, mental health, political awarness and relationships. Presenting the information in the form of essays made it an effective and user friendly book.

There were many concepts and recommendations that resonated with me. First, I liked the fact that the first essay talked about establishing a spiritual foundation because that's the key to transforming your life in all other areas. Loved the following quote in the book,

"Spirituality is the manifestation of this divine connection in one's daily life."

Unfortunately too many people don't practice what they preach and I love the fact that this book is focused on changing nonproductive behaviors into life-enhancing ones.

Secondly, I was glad to see that the book discussed redefining black man hood where black men are encouraged to ask for help and to express their feelings. Contrary to popular opinion, getting help is strength, not weakness. More black males need to recognize that.

Further, I was impressed that the contributing authors were men enough to talk about their past mistakes and use them as opportunities to grow.
Kevin Powell's essay was particularly moving. I admire his courage to discuss his story of domestic violence and how he was able to learn from it and to become a better man.

Lastly, I am glad that the book embraces the philosophy of 'each one teach one' and also embraces the attitude of collectively moving forward as a Black Community and being accountable to each other.

This handbook serves as a great guide to helping black men from all walks of life realize their inherent greatness and to walk the Earth as the Kings that they are.

Finally, Some Solutions are Proposed

In this age of "It's all about me", it's great to read a body of work that communicates the cost of "overcoming" for people of color in America. In pursuit of the American dream, something got lost along the way and Kevin Powell has the audacity to "call it out." What got lost was dignity and respect by and for both males and females. What really disappeared was a sense of "community" - that unspoken commradery of being from the same place in the same time, of sharing a season with neighbors, relatives and friends. What got lost was a sense of belonging. This compilation of essays by different men of color from different perspectives and backgrounds speaks to the urgency of the problem. More importantly, practical solutions are offered that have a probability of success. I applaud Mr. Powell for the effort and the desire to be an ambassador of "what should be" and not "what has been".
