An original novel based on Guild Wars—the award-winning epic fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game!
Death Sails the Seas . . .
The lost kingdom of Orr lies beneath the ocean waves, an entire civilization swallowed by an ancient cataclysm. For centuries, it has lain dormant in the depths, its ancient secrets lost.
Until now.
The Elder Dragon Zhaitan has risen. In its wake, the drowned kingdom of Orr is reborn—and another is destroyed. The city of Lion’s Arch, for generations a cornerstone of civilization in Tyria, is brutally swept beneath the waves, leaving nothing but ruins. Among the survivors is Cobiah Marriner, a human sailor shipwrecked by the tsunami and stranded at sea. When he is rescued by a ferocious charr, Cobiah knows that he’s been plunged into a world forever changed.
Now, Zhaitan’s undead servants dominate the sea, destroying port after port and slaughtering anything in their path. In the midst of ruin, Cobiah vows to see Lion’s Arch rebuilt. Amid the storm of the dragon’s rising, Cobiah must become a hero to his crew and an admiral to the pirate fleet, and face the ghosts of his past. Only then will he master the Sea of Sorrows and crush the armada of Orr.

The second good Guild Wars book.
By J. Star
I've read all of the Guild Wars books to date. Ghosts of Ascalon was surprisingly good, and - just like most video game based novels - Edge of Destiny was just awful. I only ordered this one because it wasn't written by the same author as Edge of Destiny. I know this author, Ree Soesbee, was involved in writing for the actual game and has published fantasy novels before, so I figured I would give her a shot.
Sea of Sorrows, like Ghosts of Ascalon, is a good Guild Wars book. It tells the story of Cobiah Marriner, one of the founders of the city of Lion's Arch as we know it in Guild Wars 2. The story, characters, and the writing are all good. Make no mistake, this is not epic fantasy literature in the same league as Game of Thrones or The Wheel of Time, but it is a good book. I think the best way to tell if an author is any good is to answer this question: "Would I buy another book written by this author?" And the answer in this case is "Yes."

If you like Tyria you will like this book
By Merrik
Sea of Sorrows is the tale of Cobiah Marriner, the founder of Lion's Arch. This book is perfectly serviceable and pretty entertaining. If you like GW2 and want more lore, more Tyria references, and more information on the timeline between GW1 and GW2, you will not be disappointed in this book. There are plenty of interesting characters, quite a few interesting places, and a good story. This book is miles better than Edge of Destiny in basically every category.
As someone who reads a lot of fantasy, I do have a few problems with this book. For one, the characters are overall good, but some are very shallow; there's a deliberate effort to get each race and class into the book and I think that was unnecessary and makes some interactions feel forced (perhaps it could have been done in a better way). Some circumstances feel forced - for example, Cobiah's romance.
The structure of the book is really a series of interconnected short stories about Cobiah, with some having gaps of years and years. I think this wide lens view of Cobiah causes the book to wind up with "collection of short stories"-like pacing where each sequence will have a classic story arc, but I am not sure I feel the book as a whole having an arc. This made the book easy for me to put down and forget about because in many cases I was going to be starting a new story anyway and there wasn't really anything continuing to pull me forward through the book. This may be a plus for some, however it's just not my preferred cup of tea.
The book is a solid effort. To a Guild Wars outsider it's probably a 3 star book because they wouldn't get so many of the references, however for someone who plays GW2 and/or has played GW1 this is an interesting and fun read.

Astonishing
By V. Cross
I'm really unsure how anyone could question the quality of the writing in this novel. The character development is spot on and the ship battles alone are enough to keep the pages turning WELL beyond when one should go to sleep (insomnia is just another word for 'one more page!' where this book is concerned). Ree Soesbee manages to transform this epic history of 'how we got to where we are' with respect to the Guild Wars 2 setting into a novel that stands alone on its own merit.
Everyone with even the vaguest sense of interest in fantasy should grab this book, asap.
