Well-structured suggestions to help teachers help themselves

I work with teachers in a coaching capacity daily, and with those teachers' administrators as often as possible as well. Several factors that seem to me to inhibit growth are addressed in this book:

1. Teachers must set their own goals if they are to be successful. One can only strive toward a goal set by another with so much enthusiasm. Building Teachers' Capacity... (henceforth BTC) discusses ways to get teachers to reflect and set their own goals.

2. That said, teachers must also attend to the larger needs of the school when they set their goals. By encouraging ongoing dialogue between the principal and the coach and suggesting definitions for the respective roles that make this likely, BTC helps structure the attaining of the needed balance.

3. Coaches need a way to think categorically about the teachers with whom they work. BTC provides categories that are clearly delineated along with appropriate coaching behaviors for teachers in each category.

I found that I needed to adapt and modify some of the book in order to use it effectively with my teachers, but I also found the book to be inspirational enough to provide not only a base for modification but also direction for the modifications.

I am starting to do more work with coaching teachers and this book was an excellent roadmap for how to categorize them and work with them efficiently.
