Gloria Sterling had it all—money, looks, and a new sexy young husband. So when she's found floating face down in her own swimming pool, shock waves ripple through tiny Plum Harbor. At the Black Sheep Knitting Shop, Maggie Messina and her circle are devastated to lose their dear friend—a woman as colorful as her fabulous yarn creations.
The police are quick to call it an accident, but sorting out Gloria's final hours leaves too many loose ends to satisfy her friends. The vivacious, fiftysomething cougar had her French manicured tips in more than a few pots, and the threads of some inside deals stashed in her chic knitting tote.
Who was the last person to see Gloria alive on that quiet summer night? Two empty wine glasses suggest she wasn't home alone knitting the entire evening... The Black Sheep need to know the truth and set out to unravel— stitch by stitch—the weighty secrets that pulled poor Gloria under.

It's great for casual reading
By L. Williams
It's interesting enough to finish but it's not a page turner. It's great for casual reading. There was an interesting plot turn at the end that tied everything together very nicely and made for an enjoyable book.

I love to knit
By Loves to Knit
As my handle proclaims, I love to knit. I also love mysteries. This book fails on both counts. The background details of character, locale, etc are very thin. Plum Harbor could be anywhere, USA. Compare this to the works of other mystery writers where you know where you are-- a national park, the Seattle area, Cochise County, AZ (Nevada Barr or J.A. Jance, for example). The locale gives flavor and even a bit of depth to the story.
The writing is pretty marred as well; all too often paragraphs end with sentence fragments. In addition, the authors had terms like "when your married" in place of "when you're married." The editor should have caught these errors. Others pointed out how obvious the solution to the mystery was, so no need to rehash that. The details about knitting are pretty vague and sometime inaccurate. In the space of a few pages, the murder victim's project changed from a scarf to a shawl. It doesn't matter whether it's a scarf or a shawl, but it should be one or the other; again a failing on the part of an editor to help maintain continuity. Also, I know no knitter who uses a cardboard template. We use rulers or tape measure, and we make sure we get gauge (the correct number of stitches and rows to the inch). A series revolving around the owner of a yarn store and a knitting group meeting there ought to include accurate details regarding how knitters actually accomplish group (or individual) projects.
This was my first Black Sheep mystery. I'll read more reviews before deciding whether to read more in this series.

I figured out who did it way too soon
By MysteryLover
I read a lot of mysteries written by many authors. I like the ones that keep me guessing right up until the last chapter. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. About 2/3 of the way through, I had it figured out, so this was a real disappointment. I felt like the clues jumped right off the page & hit me in the head.
None of the characters had any depth to them. To me, this book felt like some of the Readers Digest Condensed books I used to read. After finishing them, I always wondered what was missing. That's how these characters were, as well as the plot. Things were hinted at, but never fleshed out - like the bad relationship with the police dective, but he's barely mentioned and plays no part in this story at all. Maybe if he did appear, the story would have some tension.
We didn't learn much of anything about the victim, there were so few characters in the story it was easy to pick out who did it, and none of the main characters were very interesting. It's like they were cardboard cutouts - 2-dimensional. I felt that if the group didn't knit together, they'd have nothing in common at all and would not be friends. Usually in a mystery, there's some suspense regarding the main character(s), some sense of danger. These ladies did nothing but talk & knit. A waste of time reading this. I won't read another of her books.
