Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours, by Jim Butcher

A stunningly packaged trade paperback reissue of Pocket Books’ original Spider-Man novel—from New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher.

Peter Parker’s life has hit a peaceful stretch. No evildoers have tried to flatten him in weeks, his marriage to Mary Jane is stronger than ever, and he’s enjoying his job as a high school science teacher. Life is good. But, naturally, that doesn’t last.

When Peter learns that his old enemy the Rhino is on a rampage in Times Square, he suits up as Spider-Man to stop the destructive villain in his tracks. But he’s unexpectedly foiled by the Black Cat, a former ally and old flame. The Cat informs Peter that the Rhino is just a distraction—the real threat comes from a group of Ancients, members of the same race as the being called Morlun, who Spidey defeated in battle years earlier. The Ancients are now looking to exact revenge—and hope to steal Spider-Man’s life force in the process.

Chapter One

My name is Peter Parker and I'm the sort of person who occasionally gets in a little over his head.

"The most important thing," said the man in the dark hood, walking down the hall next to me, "is not to show them any fear. If you hesitate, or look like you don't know what you're doing, even for a second, they'll sense the weakness. They'll eat you alive."

"No fear," I said. "No getting eaten. Check."

"I'm serious. You're outnumbered. They're faster, most of them are stronger, they can run you into the ground, and if you're going to keep it under control, you're going to have to win the battle here." He touched a finger to his forehead. "You get me?"

"Mind war," I said. "Wax on. Wax off."

The man in the dark hood stopped, frowned at me, and said, "You aren't taking this seriously."

"People always think that about me," I said. "I'm not sure why."

"See, that's what I mean," Coach Kyle said. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his workout jacket and shook his head. "You go joking around with them like that, and that's it. You've lost control."

"It's a basketball practice," I said. "Not a prison riot."

Coach Kyle was about six feet tall, with a slender build. Dark skin, and dark hair which apparently hadn't started to go gray, though he had to have been in his late forties. He wore thick glasses with black plastic Marine-issue, birth-control rims. He'd been a Hoosier, starting guard, back in the day. He hadn't made the cut to the pros. "I see," he said with a snort. "You're upset because you were the one who got stuck with running the team."

"Well," I hedged, "I wasn't much for sports when I was in school."

"This was settled at last week's faculty meeting," he told me cheerfully. "If you hadn't been the last one to arrive at this meeting, you'd be halfway home by now."

"I know." I sighed.

"Guess you had something more important come up?"

I'd been crawling around about two hundred and fifty berjillion freight-train-sized shipping containers at the piers, looking for the one the mob was using to ship out illegal immigrants for sale on the slave market. Officially speaking, they weren't people, since they hadn't filled out the right paperwork and learned the secret American handshake from the INS. Unofficially speaking, scum who target people who can't defend themselves incite me to creative outrage. By the time I had the last of them webbed to the side of their slave container in the shape of the word "LOSERS" I'd been five minutes late to the faculty meeting already.

But that's not the kind of thing you can use as an excuse.

"The dog ate my homework," I said instead.

Coach Kyle shook his head, grinning, and we stopped outside the door to the gym. "Look. Your big worry is the tallest kid there. Samuel. Best strong center I ever had, and he could go all the way. Problem is he knows it, and he doesn't play well with others."

"The fiend," I said. "This is a job for Superman."

Coach Kyle sighed. "Peter. Samuel's mom works three jobs to make enough to feed him and his three little brothers and sisters. Their block isn't such a good one. He had an older brother who was a gangbanger -- that is, until he got stabbed to death a few years back. That's when Samuel took over as man of the house. Looking out for the little ones."

I sighed, and dialed down my snark projector.

"Go on."

"Boy's got a real chance of turning into a top-rate athlete, and if he can make it into a college, he can help out his whole family. Problem is that he's a good kid, at the core."

"That's a problem?"

"Yes. Because if he doesn't get himself under control and make it into a good school, he'll graduate and try to support his family."

I nodded my head, getting it. "And wind up in the same place as his brother."

Coach Kyle nodded. "He's big, tough, and can make good money in a gang. And it isn't as if he's going to have employers kicking down his door to get to him."

"I see." I glanced through the narrow window in the door to the gym. A lot of young people were running and screaming. Shoes squeaked on the floor. Many, many basketballs thudded onto the court in a rhythm that could only have been duplicated by a drunken, clog-dancing centipede. "What do you need me to do?"

"Right now, the kid is his own worst enemy. If he doesn't learn to work with his team, to lead on the court, no university will even look at him."

"But he hasn't realized that yet," I guessed.

Coach Kyle nodded. "I just want you to understand, Peter. Coaching the basketball team isn't just a chore that needs doing. It isn't only a game. The team might be this kid's only chance. Same goes for the others, to a lesser degree. The team keeps them off the streets, out of some of the trouble."

I watched the kids playing and nodded. "I hear you. I'll take it seriously." I met his eyes and said, "Promise."

"Thank you," Coach Kyle said, and offered me his hand. "To tell you the truth, I was hoping you'd be the one to keep an eye on them for me. I see you with some of the other kids. You do good work."

I traded grips with him and grinned. "Well, I'm so childish myself."

"Heh," he said. "Maybe I should come in with you for a minute. Just to help you get started."

"It's okay," I said. "I can handle it myself. Have fun getting lasered in the eyes."

He tapped his ugly glasses with one finger. "See you next week," he said. Then he headed out.

I sighed and opened the door to the gymnasium. After all, it wasn't like I'd never been outnumbered before. I'd gone up against the Sinister Six versions one through fifty or sixty, and the Sinister Syndicate, and those bozos in the Wrecking Crew, and...the X-Men? No, that couldn't be right. I hadn't ever taken on the X-Men and thrashed them, I was sure. But those others, yes. And if I could handle them, surely I could handle a bunch of kids playing basketball.

Which only goes to show that just because I happen to be a fairly sharp scientist, the Amazing Spider-Man, and a snappy dancer, I don't know everything.

A Wicked Web
By Mel Odom
A few years ago, Spider-Man fought an incredible being who called himself Morlun, who was supposed to be an Ancient and a drinker of souls. More to the point, Morlun feasted on the souls of people who chose animals as their "spirit totem." He wanted Spider-Man because of his connection to the spider spirit. Spider-Man defeated Morlun with help, but now the rest of the Ancients, a sister and two brothers, are out for revenge. And maybe a midnight snack. After being assigned a temporary basketball coaching job with a troublesome star athlete, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) arrives home to find more trouble: his wife MJ has taken on an acting job but now has to drive to get there. Unfortunately, she doesn't have a driver's license (what native New Yorker does?) and just failed the tests. Peter tells her he'll help her, then jumps into patrol as Spider-Man. He immediately gets jumped by Felcity Hardy, an old girlfriend who goes by the name The Black Cat. Black Cat tells Spider-Man that he's being lured to his doom by the Rhino on a rampage. But, being a hero, Peter has no choice but to go -- and nearly gets feasted on. Together, Spider-Man and the Black Cat have to figure out how to defeat the trio of Ancients without losing their lives in the process.

Jim Butcher is the best-selling author of the Dresden Files, featuring wizard-for-hire Harry Dresden. A television show is being filmed now. He's also the author of the Codex Alera fantasy series.

Butcher hits some really nice licks with this book, capturing the humbleness and golly-gee of Peter Parker in his first-person narrative. Throwing the Black Cat into the mix with Peter and his wife MJ was an especially nice touch, a romp down memory lane for old-time comics fans. The Rhino, always one of Spider-Man's more simple yet complex villains, is played brilliantly in the book. There's even a couple cameos with Dr. Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme (as well as an astonishing reveal about Wong, Dr. Strange's majordomo). The pacing is frenetic, filled with the trademark quips as well as lots of dialogue among the characters, and surprising twists and turns of the plot that keep a reader moving along. Although these are comic book characters, they come across as surprisingly human on Butcher's pages.

THE DARKEST HOURS is a solid Spider-Man novel, a great adventure read, and the very thing a comic geek or someone interested in Spider-Man through the movie venue needs to pack along to the beach. Harry Dresden fans will probably also enjoy this sideline jaunt Butcher takes through the Marvel Comics Universe.

Definitely gets Spider-Man
By Mark Muncy
Some of these Spider-Man novels fall a little flat. This one "gets it." Spidey is smart, and witty. It even has a whole sub-plot involving his students at school. There's a guest shot by Dr. Strange, some comments about him being a team-up junkie, the ex-girlfriend alone with the wife, and all the fun of a typical Spidey mega-event. All this and the author makes Rhino interesting, too.

I couldn't put it down. After devouring it, I headed over and checked out the author's Dresden books and I am currently enjoying them as well.

Fast-paced, funny, fun, and human.
By M. Swierczek
A few years back, Spiderman nearly died in a two day fight with Morlun, an ancient supernatural predator. When his old foe the Rhino appears and starts tearing up the city, Spiderman arrives only to discover that Rhino was just a lure for three of Morlun's kind to trap him.

In typical Spiderman fashion, our hero is struggling to take care of his job, his marriage, his Aunt, and the people of New York - all while cracking jokes. Empty of dull moments and surprisingly full of three dimensional characters, this is a book even people who have only seen the movies will enjoy.

I have read other works by Jim Butcher, and I definitely rank his books as the most enjoyable fantasy novels available. This book just reinforces that impression.

Born of the fallout from mythic wars fought among the Grecian gods and their mortal worshippers, Diana, warrior princess of the Amazon island nation of Themyscira, bursts into the modern world both as ambassador of her people and selfless protector of the innocent. And in so doing, she collides with the ignorance and imbalances of the twenty-first century, battling injustice as Wonder Woman.

But even with skills and abilities to rival those of her Olympian namesake, Diana is put to the supreme test as the horrors of the ancient past rise again to wreak havoc upon the world. Now her indomitable will and astounding powers are pitted against the patient and all-encompassing malice of the War God Ares, who feeds on the strife created by humanity's propensity to turn against itself.

Having seen the animated movie, I was eager to read this book. As adaptations go it was word for word from the script but with much more descriptive dialogue with great detail.

The creator of the screenplay got a lot of the things of Wonder Woman right but molded and made changes that were a little odd. Hercules was seen as Themiscyra's reason for being separate from the rest of the world not Ares. Artemis was the leader of a group of Amazons separate from the ones of Themiscyra, the Bana. I also felt there was too much emphasis on making Diana too fierce for her own good and Steve a little bit of a creep.

Still this was a very interesting story. C+

Animated Movie Tie-In
By SciFiChick
Thousands of years ago, the Greek god of war, Ares, was bound by Zeus and captured by Themyscira. Themyscira is now an isolated island of Amazon warrior women. But when Colonel Steve Trevor crashes lands on an island that appears out of nowhere, Diana's mother decides that it's time to reach out to the twenty-first century world. And Diana is chosen as their ambassador. But when Ares escapes and begins causing chaos and destruction, Diana dons a familiar red, white, and blue outfit and becomes Wonder Woman.

In an adaptation of the animated Wonder Woman movie, we get a glimpse of Diana's origin story. Diana is an Amazon princess, strong, beautiful, and fearless. Steve Trevor has an instinctual attraction to her, and wants to help her adapt to the modern world. In a strange mixture of Greek mythology meeting the modern twenty-first century, there are larger-than-life gods facing realistic human characters. And it's a lot of fun. With loads of action scenes and drama, comic book fans will not be disappointed.

As a strong, independent female, Wonder Woman is a role model for all women. And the animated film novelization is no exception.

By LeiaSolo
This is a good take on how Wonder Woman came about and how she became the savior of her people plus also the people of Earth too. Her character is very good in that you see another side of this comic book character other than what you already know who is a crime fighter by night and a regular person by day. Really good book, and recommended highly.

An excellent overview and resource guide
By Midwest Book Review
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Creating An Inclusive School is the collaborative editorial effort of education specialist Richard A. Villa and special education credential and masters programs coordinator Jacqueline S. Thousand (College of Education, California State University, San Marcos). Inclusive education, loosely defined as a process by which schools strive to give an education to all students with disabilities in such a manner that the differently abled students are not excluded from the general student body or separately schooled as little as possible, is described and presented as more than a series of strategies; it is a belief system that promotes and optimum educational environment for all. Individual essays by a diverse assortment of experts discuss such issues as the rationales for creating and maintaining inclusive schools, promising practices that foster inclusive education, practical advice concerning inclusive education, "voices of inclusion" individual and community testimonies. An excellent overview and resource guide especially recommended for teachers, principals, and other educational professionals.

This book really helped me as a special education teacher to get some really great ideas on how to make inclusion work in a school that hates it. It was clear, open and honest. It also gave some really practical how-to's as well. I also found the real life stories to be inspiring. I think that without this book and books like it the paradigm shift to inclusion would be difficult.

A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Jonestown, by Julia Scheeres

“A gripping account of how decent people can be taken in by a charismatic and crazed tyrant” (The New York Times Book Review).

In 1954, a past or named Jim Jones opened a church in Indianapolis called Peoples Temple Full Gospel Church. He was a charismatic preacher with idealistic beliefs, and he quickly filled his pews with an audience eager to hear his sermons on social justice. As Jones’s behavior became erratic and his message more ominous, his followers leaned on each other to recapture the sense of equality that had drawn them to his church. But even as the congregation thrived, Jones made it increasingly difficult for members to leave. By the time Jones moved his congregation to a remote jungle in Guyana and the U.S. government began to investigate allegations of abuse and false imprisonment in Jonestown, it was too late.

A Thousand Lives is the story of Jonestown as it has never been told. New York Times bestselling author Julia Scheeres drew from tens of thousands of recently declassified FBI documents and audiotapes, as well as rare videos and interviews, to piece together an unprecedented and compelling history of the doomed camp, focusing on the people who lived there.

The people who built Jonestown wanted to forge a better life for themselves and their children. In South America, however, they found themselves trapped in Jonestown and cut off from the outside world as their leader goaded them toward committing “revolutionary suicide” and deprived them of food, sleep, and hope. Vividly written and impossible to forget, A Thousand Lives is a story of blind loyalty and daring escapes, of corrupted ideals and senseless, haunting loss.

Review
"Riveting...You will not be able to look away. " --"The San Francisco Chronicle"

"Julia Scheeres's book sheds startling new light on this murky, mini-chapter of contemporary history....the narrative is [a] compelling...psychological mystery." --"The Wall Street Journal"

"Scheeres shows great compassion and journalistic skill in reconstructing Jonestown's last months and the lives of many Temple members (including a few survivors)...["A Thousand Lives" is a] well-written, disturbing tale of faith and evil." --"Kirkus"

"Jonestown has become a grim metaphor for blind obedience--for fanaticism without regard to consequences. In the aptly titled" A Thousand Lives", Julia Scheeres captures the humanity within this terrible story, vividly depicting individuals trapped in a vortex of hope and fear, faith and loss of faith, not to mention the changes sweeping America in the 1960s and '70s. She makes their journeys to that unfathomable tragedy all too real; what was truly incredible, she shows, was the escape from death by a tiny handful of survivors. Drawing on a mountain of sources compiled and recently released by the FBI, she changes forever the way we think about this dark chapter of our history."--T.J. Stiles, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbil"t

"Chilling and heart-wrenching, this is a brilliant testament to Jones's victims, so many of whom were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time." --"Publisher's Weekly", starred review

"For those who can picture only the gory end of Jonestown, Julia Scheeres offers a heartbreaking and often inspiring glimpse of what might have been. Her masterfully told and exhaustively researched "A Thousand Lives" should stand not only as the definitive word on Jones' horrific machinations, but on the utopian dreams of a bygone generation. A worthy follow-up to her superb memoir, "Jesus Land"." --Tom Barbash, author of "On Top of the World: Cantor Fitzgerald, Howard Lutnick, and 9/11: A Story of Loss and Renewal"

"How do you tell a new story about Jim Jones and his followers, when everyone knows how it ends? ...Julia Scheeres' riveting A" Thousand Lives" gives us reason to look again. " --"Miami He"rald

"The first solid history of the Temple...less a warning about the dangers of religosity than a clear headed chronology." --"San Francisco" magazine

"Julia Scheeres' "A Thousand Lives"... tells the tragic tale of Jonestown -- in its way, a peculiarly American apocalypse." --"L.A. Times"

"The definitive book on Jonestown and the Danse Macabre of suicide and murder orchestrated by mad Jim Jones. Julia Scheeres takes us by the hand and leads us gently, inexorably, into the darkness." -Tim Cahill, author of "Lost in My Own Backyard"

From the Inside Flap

Had I walked by 1859 Geary Boulevard in San Francisco when Peoples Temple was in full swing, I certainly would have been drawn to the doorway.

I grew up in a strict Christian family with an adopted black brother; race and religion were the dominant themes of my childhood. In our small Indiana town, David and I often felt self-conscious walking down the street together. Strangers scowled at us, and sometimes called us names. I wrote about the challenges of our relationship in my memoir, Jesus Land.

Suffice it to say, David and I would have been thrilled and amazed by Peoples Temple, a church where blacks and whites worshipped side by side, the preacher taught social justice instead of damnation, and the gospel choir transported the congregation to a loftier realm. We longed for such a place.

Unfortunately, the laudable aspects of Peoples Temple have been forgotten in the horrifying wake of Jonestown.

I stumbled onto writing this book by accident. I was writing a satirical novel about a charismatic preacher who takes over a fictional Indiana town, when I remembered Jim Jones was from Indiana, and Googled him. I learned that the FBI had released fifty thousand pages of documents, including diaries, meeting notes, and crop reports, as well as one thousand audiotapes that agents found in Jonestown after the massacre, and that no one had used this material to write a comprehensive history of the doomed community. Once I started digging through the files, I couldn't tear myself away.

It was easy to set my novel aside. I believe that true stories are more powerful, in a meaningful, existential way, than made-up ones. Learning about other peoples' lives somehow puts one's own life in sharper relief.

Aside from race and religion, there were other elements of the Peoples Temple story that resonated with me. When David and I were teenagers, our parents sent us to a Christian reform school in the Dominican Republic that had some uncanny parallels with Jonestown. I could empathize with the residents' sense of isolation and desperation.

You won't find the word cult in this book, unless I'm directly citing a source that uses the word. My aim here is to help readers understand the reasons that people were drawn to Jim Jones and his church, and how so many of them ended up dying in a mass-murder suicide on November 18, 1978. The word cult only discourages intellectual curiosity and empathy. As one survivor told me, nobody joins a cult.

To date, the Jonestown canon has veered between sensational media accounts and narrow academic studies. In this book, I endeavor to tell the Jonestown story on a grander, more human, scale.

Compassion that increases the horror in this history
By Kurt Conner
Like many people born in 1980 or later, I grew up with a vague notion of Jonestown as a weird town in a jungle where a bunch of people in a cult drank poison Kool-Aid and died. I use the term "drink the Kool-Aid" when I refer to someone completely buying in to an idea or a cause. But until I read this book, I never really knew what Jonestown was all about.

Scheeres provides a service in this book, both as a skillful historian and as a compassionate human being. She synthesizes hours of audio recordings and written documents into a gut-wrenching tragedy that will linger with the reader. The true strength of her work is the constant tension between the hope of the individual characters and the inevitable doom that presses down on every page. Scheeres truly loves the victims of the massacre, and she is clearly determined to present them in sympathetic ways, sharing stories of simple people who came to Peoples Temple because it offered real racial integration, miraculous healings, and loving community. They believed in a socialism that affirmed the value of every human being, and they were willing to sign away all of their possessions for the cause.

As the group developed, though, things got darker, and Scheeres brings in an impressive level of detail in her examples. She writes about demonstrably fake "healings" and sham "assassination attempts" that Jones fabricated to make his followers feel persecuted by outsiders. There are heart-dropping scenes when church members are forced to sign blank pieces of paper, knowing that if they desert their communities, then the church leaders will type confessions (to murder, child molestation, or any other crimes) and deliver them to authorities. Jones also twists the spiritual bases of his organization when he literally stomps on Bibles onstage and declares himself God.

By the time the community moves to a compound in Guyana, Scheeres has found a comfortable rhythm, increasing the tension like a horror movie as the inevitable massacre swirls in a tightening band around the village. Jones reads about "revolutionary suicide" and completely misinterprets the term, missing the idea of "making progress for a revolutionary cause, even though it results in your death" and creating a moronic "kill yourself and leave a mean note" kind of definition. He insists that his community is being hunted by outsiders because of their commitment to socialism, while he predictably lounges in an air-conditioned drug-induced haze as his people sweat and starve. His obsession with death strangles his people, as their objections are worn down by hunger, fear, isolation, sleeplessness, and dehumanizing punishments for disloyalty.

Around this point in the narrative, the reader will surely have noticed that most of Scheeres' tale is based on facts from official documents and recordings. Scheeres only presents a few point-of-view characters to share their observations of daily life. While this focus seems troubling at first, the reader will come to realize that the main characters are so few because everyone else is going to die a horrible death in the jungle. It is a terrifying experience, and the narrative thunders toward its macabre conclusion with an intense power.

This book is a complex treasure, a road to hell paved with unapologetically noble intentions, and Scheeres has accomplished a great feat with it. She never loses her grasp of the humanity of her characters in the pursuit of her plot to its inevitable bloody conclusion. She will break your heart in the end, but only because she has worked so hard to win your heart in the first place.

Compelling
By Thom
As a young survivor of this tragedy (17 years of age at the time), I found Julia Sheere's ability to summarize and tell the events to be quite compelling. I myself who was there, learned a great deal more of the inside workings and manipulations which occurred.
I am finally satisfied some body such as Julia took hold of the history of events and told them in such a manner to express we went to Jones Town - Because we had dreams of a better life! Not to die for some satanical, egomaniac!
Thank you Julia!

Powerful and disturbing
By LMS
This is one of those books that you don't read for pleasure. To say that what happened at Jonestone was a tragedy is an understatement of incredible proportion. That goes without saying. Even though I once watched a documentary on television about Jonestown, I didn't know much about it. (I was only 2 years old in 1978). As I watched that documentary, I remember thinking "Why didn't they just leave?" This book helped me realize that the answer to that question is far more complex than it seems. The people at Jonestown left the United States in search of a dream. They wanted to live in a utopia of racial equality and harmony. By the time they realized just how dangerous and unstable Jim Jones really was, the settlement had become pretty much like a concentration camp. It can be easy to judge people who get involved with cults as stupid and naive. We tell ourselves that we would never get into a situation like that. But I think reality is that all humans need to believe in something. I think if the circumstances were right, anyone could be duped by a cult. That is why books like this are so important. I think it is so important to recognize the warning signs of a cult and to be proactive. Cult leaders like Jim Jones will often brainwash their followers, control them through brainwashing and some type of abuse, and isolate them from family and friends. I hope that people will read books like this and that something good will eventually come out of something so horrific and tragedy. I think it is also important to remember that that these were real people. They were someone's friend, mother or father, son or daughter, grandparents, and friends. They had lives and names. Hindsight is always 20/20 and it's easy to look back and see the clear warning signs. To be sure, the lessons to be learned from this tragedy are difficult, painful, and sobering, but they are lessons that must be learned nonetheless. I hope and pray that a tragedy of this magnitude never happens again. But as the old saying goes "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

A powerful and haunting tale that will shock, horrify, and disturb you on the deepest possible level.

World Class Manufacturing, by Richard J. Schonberger

In his best-selling book Japanese Manufacturing Techniques, Richard J. Schonberger revolutionized American manufacturing theory and, more important, practice. In that breakthrough book, he revealed that Japanese manufacturing excellence was not culturally bound. Offering the first demystified explanation of the simple techniques that fueled Japan's industrial success, he demonstrated how the same methods could be put to work as effectively in U.S. plants.

Now, in World Class Manufacturing, Schonberger returns to tell the success stories of nearly 100 American corporations -- including Hewlett-Packard, Harley-Davidson, General Motors, Honeywell, and Uniroyal -- that have adopted the famed just-in-time production and "total quality control" strategies. Based on his firsthand experience as a major consultant to American industry, he examines how they did it -- and illustrates how the same concrete, specific steps used by these top companies can be implemented in any factory today. What's more, Schonberger shows that his bold concepts and reforms apply equally to all industries, whether the product is computers, pasta, or trucks, and to all divisions -- from manufacturing and engineering to accounting and marketing.

According to Schonberger, world-class manufacturing depends on blended management -- rather than domination by a separate group of managers -- which marshalls resources for continual rapid improvement. To achieve world-class status, companies must change procedures and concepts, which in turn leads to recasting relations among suppliers, purchasers, producers, and customers. Acknowledging the difficulty inherent in such changes, Schonberger stresses that employee involvement and interaction, both on the shop floor and in the decision-making/problem-solving process, is key. Wary of those who view improvement in terms of modernizing equipment, he points out that making maximum use of people and current machinery is a company's first priority; automation, if necessary, should come much later.

World Class Manufacturing also includes Schonberger's 17-point action agenda to guide innovators toward manufacturing excellence, from getting to know the customer to cutting the number of suppliers, reducing error in production, and deciding when and how to automate.

Indispensable for all manufacturing innovators who aim to keep ahead of the competition, this inspiring, groundbreaking volume does much more than just recommend or theorize about the new manufacturing approach. Plainly, realistically, and logically, it explains how it's done.

Review
Eric Olsen Worldwide Manufacturing Education Manager, Hewlett Packard Components Group Dick Schonberger's call to "manage the basics, watch the results," plays well in Hewlett Packard's environment where we believe people want to do a good job. Focusing on the right metrics at each level tells them what a good job is.

John M. Burnham

CFPIM Regional Vice President, American Production and Inventory Control Society

Richard Schonberger has successfully addressed the next steps in the journey toward becoming world-class manufacturers -- issues of holistic view and perspective, effective interfacing among functional areas, and demonstrated results that demolish the arguments that "we're different" and "it can't be done." Each of his chapter topics is logically and persuasively developed. In a word, I wish I had written this book.

Philip Gray

Vice President, Defense Systems & Electronics Group, Texas Instruments

"World Class Manufacturing" brings together for the first time all the programs and approaches we at Texas Instruments and other companies have been working toward for the past six years -- total quality control, just-in-time manufacturing, statistical process control, manufacturing cells, and, most important, employee involvement. It will be required reading for managers who have marketing, product design, and manufacturing responsibilities.

John P. Robb

Vice President, Manufacturing Monsanto Electronic Materials Company

The commonsense examples and guidelines on the "how to" of total quality control Richard Schonberger provides in "World Class Manufacturing" will enable us to move beyond manufacturing excellence to business excellence. Schonberger's first book, "Japanese Manufacturing Techniques," provided the missing link in our overall quality program and is on the "must read" list for all our manufacturing line personnel. "World Class Manufacturing" will be required reading for "all" functions within our company.

Robert J. Saldich President and CEO (Retired), Raychem Corporation Richard Schonberger taught us in 1984 about Japanese manufacturing and launched Raychem on its continuing quality journey. Now he takes us into a whole new dimension. The book is stuffed with wonderful insights, ideas and approaches. It is a rare original contribution to the literature.

Kelly Hoffmann Vice-President Pressure Operations, Measurement Division, Rosemount Inc. Dr. Schonberger created a new paradigm for how a factory should operate in "World Class Manufacturing." Now he helps us see the world of manufacturing differently once again, using inventory turnover as the lens.

Arthur D. Wainwright Chairman and CEO, Wainwright Industries, Inc. A powerful book of trenchant and perceptive observation needed to prosper in the fast-approaching 21st century.

Robert Anderson Director of Manufacturing Operation, The Wheelabrator Corporation For years now manufacturers have known that there was something wrong with measuring manufacturing strength by profit and sales. Other measurements were needed. Now with an understanding of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order measurements we have new tools and a better understanding of their relationships.

Soma Coulibaly Operations Quality Assurance Manager, Hallmark Cards, Inc. Once again, Richard Schonberger has defined the new standard for excellence.

Ronald D. Schmidt Chairman, President and CEO, Zytec Corporation The principles unveiled in this masterly book will indeed become manufacturing's action agenda in the years ahead.

From the Back Cover
Since the invention of double-entry bookkeeping, managers have judged a company's worth by sales and profits. Now, Richard J. Schonberger, the architect of the worldwide Just-In-Time revolution, reaches beyond "financials" to redefine excellence - and reveals, with new benchmark data, how pioneers become dynasties. This book will be indispensable reading for manufacturing and general managers in all industries, as well as for pension fund managers, institutional investors, stock analysts, and stockbrokers.

If you want to manufacture better-- here you go.
By A Customer
I must say that I first read this because I had to, but onceI did it (really, now) changed my outlook on production. The author details not only the whys of good manufacturing practice, but also the hows and then goes into many case studies to demonstrate that he's not just blowing smoke from his ivory tower. Even better, the stuff works! One division of my company got hooked on the "World Class" bandwagon before it came into vogue. I went to tour their facility and I swore I had walked into Schonberger's book. Anyway, applied correctly, this book can turn your systems upside down and make you more profitable than you can almost imagine (inventory turns over 100? Believe it!). The best thing is that all this happens by developing employees and truly giving the line responsibility for production to the individual line workers. Tough stuff for most companies to even consider, and perhaps my only criticism of the book is that the author doesn't give an accurate picture of how long a transition from "traditional" management to World Class Mfg can require. Our facility worked for six years to get it right, which is actually very good for this transition (he says allow for a 10 year plan in his 1996 sequel, also excellent). Anyway, I'm putting theory into practice in my own mfg line, and thankfully I have this book to guide me. I'm buying copies for everyone in my production team and we'll "go back to school," so to speak. Wish me luck.

Highly Recommended!
By Rolf Dobelli
Richard J. Schonberger, author of the critically acclaimed book, Japanese Manufacturing Techniques, which revolutionized American manufacturing theory and practices, now examines how world-class manufacturing techniques can be implemented by American corporations. This 1986 classic remains valuable, since manufacturing changes do not happen overnight, and plenty of companies are far from world-class in their approach to efficiency and productivity. Schonberger writes clearly, authoritatively and often amusingly, covering every element of world-class manufacturing in detail. We at getAbstract recommend this book for everyone involved in the manufacturing process, not just mangers and executives, but all employees who seek a context and a future for their work.

Another home run
By An educator
This book should inspire and energize educators of students at all levels, from kindergarten to college. It reminds us of what we already know but probably do not confront: that our current, 21st-century students already experience the world in different ways from most of their teachers. It explains, clearly and dramatically how we are not meeting our students' current needs, and not preparing them for their future. Then it tells us how we can. Zmuda doesn't led you hide from her arguments, and she marshals supporting comments from a broad range of creative thinkers. She challenges you, argues with you, and shows you how pioneering, dedicated professionals are finding a new, 21st century way. I couldn't put it down.
PS If you don't know Zmuda's other work, I heartily recommend The Competent Classroom : Aligning High School Curriculum, Standards, and Assessment--A Creative Teaching Guide. I read it after I had taught for 25 years, and it changed my view of teaching forever.
