Solid Assessment Breakdown for Adaptive Teachers

If you're not burned out, bogged down, or "just faking it 'til you make it," this is a great piece for aiding your teaching practice. Like any academic work, Marzano utilizes the strongest research findings in the field of assessment to support his suggestions for "best practices." While some reviewers may not see the potential for "real world" application, I've been able to implement several methods suggested by Marzano into my practice as a classroom teacher. Naturally, you may need to ease into some of the methods until you feel comfortable, or you may have to implement certain elements slowly as to warm your administration up to a new way of doing things. However, if you are truly an educator with an eye on assessing your students in a manner which engages and invests them in your curriculum, you could do much worse than this work.

Broad concepts, and specific suggestions

I got a great deal out of this book. Marzano's books are always very research based (a plus if you ask me) so they're nto exactly beach reading. This book, in particular, mostly describes a specific grading method that is similar to CBM, that needs to be implemented school wide. It also adresses several braod ideas that are important to authentic assessment that teachers can apply at a classroom level.

In a world where assessment is becoming more and more important, schools and teachers need to understand and manage it better. This book can help us do both.

Like much of Marzano's other work this book is FILLED with references that support his research ideas. If you just accept that his ideas are valid (and according to all his research, they are) you can skim over that portion of the book. Then you can get into the meat of his book - how to assess and grade in your classroom.

There were many ideas that I could adapt to my 150 student/5 periods a day classroom. There were also quite a few ideas that could only work in an elementary setting of 25-30 students per day. He does address ways to get around this problem in some instances. Overall, I will try and introduce several ideas a marking period into my high school classroom. This book has opened my eyes to a different way of thinking about assessment and grading.
