Not a "how-to-teach," but a checklist of being effective.

Teaching is an art and a science. The best teachers are those who combine both. This book, which one reviewer gave a "1" despite only reading the 1st chapter, combines the two. As a career teacher, I found it enlightening to read the research about the characteristics of an effective teacher and compare it against what I do as a librarian. If you're going to teach, you owe it to yourself to read this book and use it to make yourself better.

A fresh book on teaching

As a teacher at a German College of Further Education I strongly recommend this book. It would take a lifetime to read all the books about what makes a "good" teacher. Stronge's book does not need that much reading time. The author has a down-to-earth approach on teaching, he does not stick to the image of the "super teacher" who does not exist in reality. In his chapter on classroom organzization he gives practical hints how to be effective in the classroom beginning with what a classroom should look like. At first sight it seems that this needs no further description but looking at schools in Europe you will find that a lot can be learned from Stronge. In my country teachers spend 45 minutes in one class and move to the next. Apart from the sciences the class often has no proper equipment. - In another chapter Stronge points out the weak sides of teachers who ended up in schools and colleges without proper training. Stronge's thoughts are very important as one can watch the tendency to allow anybody into the class who feels that he/she can do it. - The parts worth reading in the book are the pages on "positive qualities" and "red flags" followed by checklists for classroom observation. These pages may be extremely useful for student teachers. Of course, the book is not a substitute for intensive reading in specific areas of teaching , but it provides a useful introduction to what is expected from a teacher today.

Good book. It is easy to navigate between chapters and topics. The information is helpful to new and veteran teachers alike. It describes qualities that are valuable in education and helps dedicated educators tailor their goals from these qualities.
