About the Author
Colette Livermore was born in Mittagong, Australia, in 1954. At 17, she had been accepted to medical school but chose to join Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity instead, after seeing a film about Mother's work with the poor. As a nun she was called Sister Tobit and was with the order for 11 years, serving in India, Hong Kong, Timor, and the poor outback of Australia. After she left the order in 1983, at age 30, Livermore went back to medical school and ultimately attained her medical degree from the University of Queensland. Since then, she has worked in Australia's Northern Territory, where the despair facing the aboriginal and other people in remote communities affected her deeply, in Aileu, East Timor, where she worked with local staff at a rural clinic to overcome tuberculosis, malnutrition, and infectious disease, and again in Australia, where she currently lives.

Not a book about struggles with spirituality at all.

The subtitle to this book is: Leaving Mother Teresa, Losing Faith, and Searching for Meaning. The book talks about NONE of these. This book is 249 pages long. The first chapter is the usual 'how I grew up' that is typical of autobiographies. From page 18 to page 182 is an in depth description of her life as a nun. The author describes a lot of what I consider bizarre behavior, self punishment, being stripped of identity, being scolded for doing what most would consider the right thing. It does pull back the curtain and reveals the underbelly of Mother Teresa's movement, which is not flattering at all. But, this book does not adequately talk about "Losing Faith" or a "Search for Meaning". On these points the book is very superficial. If you want to read a book about what it is like to be a nun then read this book. If you want to read about a person's struggle with god and spirituality then this book is not it.

courageous story

Those who wrote poor reviews and were angry with the authors telling of her story probably did not actually read the book. This is her story. All she can do is tell her own honest truth. I don't think anyone can be condemned for that. She does not make it a rant against the church or against Mother Teresa. She simply states her experience and what she disagreed with. I think she is courageous to tell this story and voice her opinion. I found it thought provoking. As one who is in the church (tho not Catholic) and works with the outcasts in our society I often struggle with some of the same issues. The author is not a professional writer. the writing is amatuer and I found myself wishing it were better written as she glossed over some stories that could have been well told. I would recommend this book to others who want to think about these issues and have more than one side to the story.
