Unhinged: The Trouble with Psychiatry - A Doctor's Revelations about a Profession in Crisis, by Daniel Carlat M.D.

IN THIS STIRRING AND BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN WAKE-UP CALL, psychiatrist Daniel Carlat exposes deeply disturbing problems plaguing his profession, revealing the ways it has abandoned its essential purpose: to understand the mind, so that psychiatrists can heal mental illness and not just treat symptoms. As he did in his hard-hitting and widely read New York Times Magazine article "Dr. Drug Rep," and as he continues to do in his popular watchdog newsletter, The Carlat Psychiatry Report, he writes with bracing honesty about how psychiatry has so largely forsaken the practice of talk therapy for the seductive—and more lucrative—practice of simply prescribing drugs, with a host of deeply troubling consequences.

Psychiatrists have settled for treating symptoms rather than causes, embracing the apparent medical rigor of DSM diagnoses and prescription in place of learning the more challenging craft of therapeutic counseling, gaining only limited understanding of their patients’ lives. Talk therapy takes time, whereas the fifteen-minute "med check" allows for more patients and more insurance company reimbursement. Yet DSM diagnoses, he shows, are premised on a good deal less science than we would think.

Writing from an insider’s perspective, with refreshing forthrightness about his own daily struggles as a practitioner, Dr. Carlat shares a wealth of stories from his own practice and those of others that demonstrate the glaring shortcomings of the standard fifteen-minute patient visit. He also reveals the dangers of rampant diagnoses of bipolar disorder, ADHD, and other "popular" psychiatric disorders, and exposes the risks of the cocktails of medications so many patients are put on. Especially disturbing are the terrible consequences of overprescription of drugs to children of ever younger ages. Taking us on a tour of the world of pharmaceutical marketing, he also reveals the inner workings of collusion between psychiatrists and drug companies.

Concluding with a road map for exactly how the profession should be reformed, Unhinged is vital reading for all those in treatment or considering it, as well as a stirring call to action for the large community of psychiatrists themselves. As physicians and drug companies continue to work together in disquieting and harmful ways, and as diagnoses—and misdiagnoses—of mental disorders skyrocket, it’s essential that Dr. Carlat’s bold call for reform is heeded.

Review
"Unhinged is a searingly honest and articulate account of modern psychiatry's failure to think outside the box of psychopharmacology in treating patients." (Alison Bass, author of Side Effects: A Prosecutor, a Whistleblower and a Bestselling Antidepressant on Trial, winner of the NASW Science in Society Award for 2009)

“A psychiatrist looks deeply into the mirror and takes stock of his profession and what it has become. Whether you are a patient, student, trainee, clinician, or “KOL” (key opinion leader”), this frank and insightful book will definitely make you think.” (Erick Turner, M.D., Department of Psychiatry and Center for Ethics in Health Care, Oregon Health & Science University)

"Unhinged provides crucial insights for anyone who cares about the future of Psychiatry. Must reading for psychiatrists and patients alike." (Keith Ablow, MD, author of Living the Truth)

"Terrific book, terrific insights! Daniel Carlat is the kind of psychiatrist we wish we all had." (Manny Alvarez, MD, Senior Managing Health Editor at Fox News Channel)

MUST-READ for anyone who ever needs to see a doctor
By Jennifer
Great easy to read book about the world of psychiatry and modern medicine in general. This author lays it all out on the line about how and why the pharmaceutical companies control the modern world of medicine. The odds are good your doctor is paid more by drug companies than he makes from his salary. A great statement of the facts mixed with the authors opinions and personal experiences. A must-read for anyone who has long-term medical conditions. If the book were newer it would include a link to the U.S. government website OpenPaymentsData.gov to check and see just how much your doctor is making from pharmaceutical companies and who he really works for.

A Safe, PC Critique
By Phil Ochs Fan Club
Unhinged is the politically correct criticism of psychiatry that is safe enough to get Carlat interviews on mass media including NPR but which says nothing that will truly upset establishment psychiatry. Everything Carlat says here has been reported for a decade in the corporate media. Yes, psychiatrists are bribed by drug companies to push drugs - old news! Yes, most psychiatrists are nothing but drug pushers who farm out psychotherapy - old news! Yes, as Carlat quite timidly implies, psychiatry has little hard science to back up its biochemical claims - again old news.

Want to read the kind of critique of psychiatry that is BIG NEWS? Read investigative reporter Robert Whitaker's Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America (Crown Publishers, April 2010). It is the most important book on psychiatric treatment in a generation. Whitaker, as a reporter for the Boston Globe, won a George Polk Award for medical writing and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. Whitaker is in the tradition of Michael Pollan, Eric Schlosser, and other investigative reporters who get taken seriously. A decade from now, nobody will remember Unhinged, but Whitaker's Anatomy of an Epidemic may do what Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was able to do - wake up an entire nation to the dangers of the arrogance of another chemical industry.

Honest, introspective look at author's profession
By J. Davis
Something is rotten in the state of psychiatry today, and Daniel Carlat shows you, with brutal honesty, what the problem is. He shows the influence of the drug companies over doctors--even over himself at one point, which I give him credit for admitting. Several big names in psychiatry--including Daniel Amen--are shown to be quacks. Studies funded by drug companies turn out to be--shockingly!--biased and unreliable. Yes, as many reviewers have pointed out, drug company influence over doctors is hardly breaking news, but sometimes an important message needs to be repeated over and over again. At the end of this book, you'll like Dr.Carlat, but you may be weary of that Paxil pill your doctor just prescribed. If you're a mental health professional or patient, you need to read this delightful book.

HIS NAME IS DANTE.

Dark. Talented. Beautiful. Star of the rock band Inferno. Rumored owner of the hot New Orleans nightspot Club Hell. Born of the Blood, then broken by an evil beyond imagination.

HIS PAST IS A MYSTERY.

F.B.I. Special Agent Heather Wallace has been tracking a sadistic serial murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, and the trail has led her to New Orleans, Club Hell, and Dante. But the dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be "nightkind": in other words, a vampire. Digging into his past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record a mile long. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien DeNoir, who appears to guard mysteries of his own.

HIS FUTURE IS CHAOS.

What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer -- and she's pretty sure that link makes him the CCK's next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man -- who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire -- in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante's past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect him from his destiny....

From Publishers Weekly
Set in the brooding New Orleans area long established as the best location for all things vampiric, Phoenix's lively debut has it all: Rogue [FBI] agents, Bureau-ordered hits, mad-scientist experiments in psychopathology, vampires and fallen angels and a slicing-dicing serial killer. Smart, sexy FBI Special Agent Heather Wallace has been trying to catch the Cross-Country Killer for three years when the trail leads to New Orleans and Club Hell, where Dante Prejean performs with the Inferno, an industrial/goth rock band. Dante is a Cajun and a born vampire whose memories of his terrible past have been erased, leaving him vulnerable to the psychopathic killer, E, who knows all that Dante has forgotten. As E begins targeting Dante's loved ones, Heather must swallow her skepticism and work with Dante's vampiric friends and family to save him. Phoenix alternates romantic homages to gothdom and steamy blood-drinking threesomes with enough terse, fast-paced thriller scenes to satisfy even the most jaded fan. (Jan.)

Nice Effort
By Laura
I picked this up at the airport, and was immediately sucked in. So I bought it (despite the outrageous airport prices) and pretty much finished it off in the day I was traveling.

The first third of the novel is quite good: the crime, police involvement, the introduction of our two protagonists, as well as various other plotlines, are deftly woven in.

Both of the leads are about as cliched as they come; one gorgeous but determined police detective - check; one stunningly sexy, dark and mysterious vampire male - check. They are, at least initially, saved by the complexity of their backgrounds, characterizations and motives.

Unfortunately, about the second third of the book, things go downhill.

Heather Wallace is supposed to be an FBI profiler who is heading the investigation into an infamous serial killer - but damned if I can figure out why. I'm honestly not sure how a profiler is heading a case, instead of a detective; but the point is, she's not a field agent. So what she is doing hot-dogging it around solo is beyond me. It also becomes clear that she is far too young (and oh so coincidentally gorgeous) to be doing this job.

She makes several very stupid mistakes; her gun magazine is stolen and she doesn't even realize it; she walks into a fight with her purse; etc. There is also the fact that she hooks up with her main subject after two days; this despite knowing he is a possible pschopath.

As for Dante Prejean, he has a fascinating build-up. But he also makes some very stupid mistakes, at least one of which resulted in the person he was trying to save being killed. There's a definite angry teenager here rather than an actual adult, complete with massive amounts of melodrama and angst. It also cannot help but call into question even further Heather Wallace's judgement in getting involved with him.

The supporting characters are numerous and generally well fleshed out. I actually thought De Noir would have been far more attractive as the main male lead. His backround, history and involvement come out gradually, but are never fully explained. Also, fair warning to the reader; there are several strange terms he uses which require referral to the back of the book.

The last third of the book picks up again. But at this point, a lot of connection with the story has been lost. The author, I think, tried to take on too much for her first novel. But all the various subplots do come together and most questions are answered.

The characters do not impress you with their intelligence, and the book lacks in the realm of realism, originality and consistency. You can find reworkings of these themes in other novels and fanfiction all over the web. The melodrama is high, the romance is overdone, and the police procedural fizzles badly. But it's still very entertaining, fairly interesting, and has good charaterization. The writing is above average, and the author manages to hold onto the complex plot.

Bottom line; nice effort for a first time author. If you like Kim Harrison, Carrie Vaughn, Mary Janice Davidson, Tanya Huff and Karen Chance, then you'll want to check this out. It's a fairly solid addition to the genre, and holds promise for improvement.

OH PLEASE! Give me a break. Such a shame
By msorensen
LIGHT SPOILERS, but no plot summaries. Recommendations included.

HIGH LEVEL: Disjointed story-telling, emotionally stunted, lacking in plausible romance. Had to force myself to finish because I felt a poor review wouldn't be fair otherwise. Writing style is highly descriptive and the mythos, while nothing really new or innovative was provocative. I have LOTS of issues with this book, but there were two MAJOR FLAWS that turned what could have been an intense, noir-ish crime driven urban fantasy into nothing short of TORTURE. Although, if you find Goth teenage boys attractive, you might like this more than I did...

FLAW # 1: It fails to grab you and the pacing is painfully disjointed. The story is told using a shifting perspective, which CAN BE a great tool to make sure the reader sees what is going on when the characters don't. However, in this case there were NINE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES- heroine, lead male, supporting good guys, ALL the bad guys... everyone! Basically this prevented any kind of momentum from building up. As soon as it got interesting, you were forced away from the action and into a different character's head clear across the damn country. If I had been reading this in paperback, I would have skipped ahead. Reading it on a Kindle meant I was trapped and forced to suffer through the author's poor sense of timing and fragmented story-telling. I didn't appreciate it

FLAW # 2: Romance was just plain baffling and occasionally made me queasy. Can anyone explain to me how an intelligent, successful, 31 year old, career FBI agent could POSSIBLY fall in love with a 23 year old, angst-ridden, sickly, Goth smash metal singer who behaves like a cranky teenager?????? I'm sorry, but this entire story centered on a character, Dante, who needed a MOTHER, not a lover. We were constantly reminded of his lack of nurturing childhood, that he never had a chance to be a kid. There were several different paternal and maternal figures sprinkled throughout the story- yet somehow our professional FBI agent FALLS IN LOVE WITH HIM, instead of trying to actually protect him???

The poor kid- and that's what he was, a CHILD- needed caring and understanding, someone to accept him and who he could trust. He needed a friend, a mentor- not a grown-up girlfriend. He was described as short (5ft 7) and thin, sickly pale pallor, heavily made up in black lipstick and eye makeup. He slunk around the place in latex and leather and black hoodies and sported silver rings everywhere- including the bloody collar he wore around his neck. Oooooo, that spells SEXY to me, boy! His face, and just his face, was supposedly breathtakingly gorgeous- yet completely covered in black goop. He behaved like a child, he looked like a child, he was treated like a child, but the author used incredibly poor judgment and decided to throw in a romance with a mature woman. BLECH, it was insulting.

It would have made much more sense and made for a better story if she had fallen for the paternal character, Lucien, and decided to stand beside him in nurturing and protecting Dante from himself and the world- and all the other supernatural enemies. It would have suited the female lead better to fall for a mature man- strong, powerful, and sexy. It would have softened Lucien's unnervingly cold character. It would have provided hope and stability for the desperately lost and interminably tormented Dante. AND it would have suited the story-line that touched upon Lucien's inadequacy to protect and "bind" (whatever the hell that was supposed to mean) Dante and keep him sane.

BOTTOM LINE: I feel like I wasted my time here and have no plans to read any more of this series. It was a shame because the characters were very well developed. I was totally disgusted by the romance (which was also in no way romantic) and every chapter made me actually swear out loud when it moved me away from the action I was just starting to get into.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Karen Chance's two highly energetic, very sexy vamp series Touch the Dark (Cassandra Palmer, Book 1) and the related series (start reading Cassandra's series first) Midnight's Daughter (Dorina Basarab, Dhampir, Book 1)
2. Jocelyn Drake's vampire/were/demon centric series full of grit: Nightwalker (Dark Days, Book 1)
3. Jeaniene Frost's vamp mystery packed with action Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1)
4. Kim Harrison's witch/vamp/pixie team of private eyes in Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1)
5. Caitlin Kittredge's procedural crime with a were heroine Night Life (Nocturne City, Book 1)
6. Lilith Saintcrow's two series, both darker and far more gritty Night Shift (Jill Kismet, Hunter, Book 1) and Working for the Devil (Dante Valentine, Book 1)
7. Nalini Singh's creative use of angels and vampires in Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter)
8. Eileen Wilks' procedural crime featuring werewolves, etc Tempting Danger (The World of the Lupi, Book 1)

A Dark and Twisted Adventure Through Sanity
By Kathryn
When I first bought this book, I couldn't put it down. I read it very quickly, and was bombarded by a very intense plot, with constant action and a thousand twist and turns. I was also faced with something very dark, twisted and...insane. And I also loved it.

Vampires are at the center of this novel, yes, but I wouldn't say they were the focus. The world created in Rush of Wings takes a little bit from everything, putting twisted versions of the angels and the Fallen side-by-side with insane scientific experiments and dark government conspiracies. And the way Dante stands at the heart of it all is almost absurd.

But I love Dante. He's an anti-hero through and through, and plays the ideal role of a rebellious teenager. He has every reason to be mopey and depressed, but he isn't. He's so stubborn that despite a tortured childhood that puts other tortured children to shame, he still keeps headstrong and leads his life the way he wants it without moaning and complaining. The Bad Seed project, which you learn about in the novel, did everything it could to make Dante into a psycho, screwed-up monster. But that's where Dante's stubbornness comes into play. He's so stubborn that he simply refuses to bend to the will of all those trying to manipulate him, and that's what makes him so great.

I should mention that there are a lot of other characters in the novel, and we read the story through many different perspectives. But really, compared to Dante, Heather is the only other perspective that I actually enjoyed. There were so many other character perspectives thrown in that I sometimes got lost, and couldn't remember which character was doing what and if they were good or bad. The confusing plot, plus the confusing juggle between telepathic thought, dialogue, internal dialogue and flashbacks put a bit of a damper on the overall novel for me.

A few more quick ups and downs: While sex is definitely present, I liked how it stayed in the background. Also, another damper on the novel for me was all the French/Cajun. I don't know Cajun, I got a little tired of constantly looking back into the Glossary for a translation. But, overall, a good novel and great suspense/thriller. A little too dark for my normal tastes, but I absolutely intend to read the sequels, and can't wait to see how Dante and Heather's relationship develop.

It speaks to how great technology can be when used in education and how ...
By Shawn Kibel
This review comes from a group of five elementary school teachers (across several grade levels) and one technology director. Reading this book (really almost a pamphlet) was part of a professional development assignment over the 2014 summer. The following is a consensus review from this group.

We all felt that the first few chapters of the book was very typical of the message that has been out there in education for a number of years now. It speaks to how great technology can be when used in education and how it enhances learning, engagement, and "mental Velcro", etc, etc. We didn't feel that this part of the book was especially different from a number of seminar sessions and books that we may have attended or read in the past. This shouldn't diminish the fact that it is still good information.

We were all relieved when the book moved on and turned more toward actual tools and strategies that could be used in the classroom. Some great tools were shown along with use cases. Following the links presented is really a must. While this was great, we have to refer back to this being much like the printed version of any number of sessions we may have attended in the past. You get a lot of great ideas thrown at you, but it still will leave the teacher a few steps short of full implementation. We would preferred this information to be presented with a little more "hand holding" in which the teacher was taken from A to Z regarding exactly how these highlighted projects were implemented. This is usually the part that is missing when this type of information is presented in a session or book. While we understand that this may not be the goal of the book, we found ourselves wishing it was there. This is the reason for the 4 vs. 5 star rating.

Our entire group agreed that the best part of the book is at the end. The "Brainstorming" section was great and got us a little closer to some ideas that we felt could be implemented in our school. We would have like the book better if this part of the book was fleshed out a little more and really was treated more like the meat of the book rather than an addendum.

Overall, we all agreed that this was a great read. It would certainly be a suggested read to newer teachers. The ones that have seemingly endless time and energy to delve deeper and figure it out on their own. More experienced teachers likely have heard a lot of this content in a slightly different package before and would prefer something a little closer to a step-by-step "how to" format.

American Assassin: A Thriller (A Mitch Rapp Novel), by Vince Flynn

#1 New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn introduces the young Mitch Rapp on his first assignment, a mission of vengeance that made him a CIA superagent.

Two decades after the Cold War, Islamic terrorism is on the rise, and CIA Operations Director Thomas Stansfield forms a new group of clandestine operatives—men who do not exist—to meet this burgeoning threat abroad before it reaches America’s shores. Stansfield’s protégée, Irene Kennedy, finds the ideal candidate in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Among the thousands grieving the victims is Mitch Rapp, a gifted college athlete, who wants only one thing: retribution. Six months of intense training prepares him to devastate the enemy with brutal efficiency, leaving a trail of bodies from Istanbul and across Europe, to Beirut. But there, the American assassin will need every ounce of skill and cunning to survive the war-ravaged city and its deadly terrorist factions.

From Publishers Weekly
With this 11th Mitch Rapp adventure, Flynn does something a little different. Taking a step back in time, he tells the story of how Rapp initially came to work for the CIA. As a young man, Rapp lost his fiancée in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103. Grief-stricken, he swears revenge on the terrorists. He's quickly recruited by the CIA and soon makes his first kill and is on his way to his first clandestine mission. George Guidall has a keen ear for dialogue, and his relaxed reading keeps Flynn's sometimes overheated prose and over-the-top plot grounded in a realm of believability. Still, he is more than capable of pulling out the stops when the action kicks in, keeping listeners on the edge of their seats once the bullets begin to fly. Flynn delivers his usual high-octane international thriller, but, in giving Rapp's backstory, he's infused it with more depth and heart than usual, and Guidall matches him beat for beat, proving himself a fine choice of storyteller. Mitch Rapp the early years
By William D. Curnutt
I have read all of Vince Flynn's works about Mitch Rapp and found this one to be the link that I had been waiting for. We have learned how lethal Mitch can be, how different he is from all the rest because of raw talent in the world of espionage. But where did he come from? How did he get to be the best?

The story starts with Irene Kennedy recruiting Mitch from the real world instead of from one of the Military Services. She brings him into the program, behind the back of Stan Hurley their training expert. As Kennedy drops Mitch in Hurley's lap you catch from that moment on that there is not going to be a good friendly outcome. As a matter of fact Hurly is going to do everything he can to be sure that this college puke, as he calls him, washes out and washes out quickly.

Unfortunately Mitch is much better than any of them imagined. Hurley is embarrassed and angered as well as thrown into conflict with his superiors. But as the training goes on and on Mitch proves that he has a mind for this type of work. He has the talent to do the job, and he has the humility to admit what he needs to learn and then put himself into learning (that comes out at the firing range).

In this book we get a better handle on Thomas Stansfield, Irene Kennedy, Stan Hurley and Lewis the psychologist. We also learn much more about the mindset behind Mitch Rapp. He and the psychologist have several conversations. What's the difference between revenge and retribution? When is it just to kill someone? Are you just acting out of anger and personal revenge or are you acting out of patriotism?

As you proceed from training to spy craft you will be drawn in to every aspect of this book. I just got the book yesterday and couldn't put it down.

Vince Flynn does a great job of developing his characters, building the story, setting the stage for the next thing that will happen and then throwing in the unexpected. You will enjoy every minute of this read.

Enjoy!

A truly outstanding read! Absolutely loved it!
By Deanna Lynn
American Assassin is my first Mitch Rapp and Vince Flynn read. I was intrigued about the books when I heard it was being made into a movie and after a quick Goodreads search on it, I determined it was a book I was intrigued enough about to order, which I did. And once I started reading it, I was hooked on the story and the character of Mitch Rapp.

Rapp is one of those characters that immediately draws you in and keeps you invested in his story. He’s intense, driven, extremely intelligent, highly logical and observant, and immensely skilled at what he does. This particular book takes readers through how Rapp got his start as an assassin, going into who he is and where he came from while also showing how he became the man he (seemingly) becomes throughout the rest of the series.

Once Rapp is recruited by Irene Kennedy and taken to meet Stan Hurley at the start of American Assassin, we start to see how Rapp is different from the others who came before him. All those qualities I listed above start to show themselves in varying different ways, each of which confuse and intrigue the people who either want him to succeed or want him to fail. He’s unlike anyone else, and that makes him as unpredictable as it does dangerous. Which seems like perfectly good traits for an assassin.

This book takes you through Rapp’s training and into his first forays into field work and every single bit of it compelled me to read on. I couldn’t put it down once I started it, and I was never so glad to have made the snap decision to buy the second book in the series before I’d read the first as I was when I finished this book. I was also glad I’d chosen to buy both of books in print because there’s something extremely satisfying about turning the pages on this one. It’s a book that stayed me with, and made me want to go out and buy every single one of the books in the series because of how much I loved reading this one.

If you’re looking for an entertaining and compelling espionage read you can escape into for a while, definitely pick up a copy of American Assassin by Vince Flynn. I am going to go out on a limb and recommend getting it in print, too, because if you’re anything like me, this is a series you’re going to want to own in print.

Action and adventure worth the read!
By D B
While awaiting the next David Balducci book, I read this author's first book, Term Limits , and was immediately hooked! American Assassin is the first in the series for the character, Mitch Rapp, and starts at the beginning of his career in the spy world. The story holds your interest and I was sad when I finished the book. For me, that's always the sign of a good book, when you don't want it to end. I have since read next book in the series for Mitch Rapp titled, Kill Shot, also excellent. I would recommend to a reader interested in Flynn's books with this character to read them in order. It is not necessary but the whole of this character is so much more interesting that way!

The Loved Dog, by Tamar Geller

Oprah’s dog trainer, Tamar Geller, offers a revolutionary system for teaching your pet to be happy, joyful, and well behaved.

Every dog owner must make a choice: Do you want a fearful and submissive pet, or do you want a happy, joyful, and well-mannered member of the family?

Tamar Geller's mission in life is to teach her cruelty-free method of “life coaching” for dogs and their people. Her revolutionary play-training uses mutual understanding and respect—and puts an end to outdated methods that rely on physical exhaustion, choke chains, prong collars, dominance rollovers, or stressful aggression of any kind.

A former Israeli intelligence officer who witnessed the horrors of military dog training methods, Tamar went on to observe wolves in the wild. She discovered that wolves educate and socialize their cubs with games, bonding, and body language, not dominance or punishment. As a result, she developed teaching systems that address a dog's authentic nature, part wolflike and part toddlerlike. Learning can be a positive experience that dogs enjoy and look forward to, and we can actually make it fun for our dogs to listen to us and behave as we want them to.

Tamar's insights have brought dog training into the twenty-first century, and her groundbreaking techniques have won the approval of the Humane Society of the United States, for which she is a longtime advisor. Her celebrity clients include Oprah Winfrey, Ben Affleck, Courteney Cox-Arquette, Owen Wilson, and the Osbournes, and she has appeared as an expert on the Today show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Animal Planet, and more.

In The Loved Dog, Tamar gives you all the instruction, insights, and tips you need to teach your dog good manners, as well as to troubleshoot specific problems and unwanted behaviors. She helps you and your dog learn a common language, resulting in a loving, respectful relationship that will bring you years of joy and companionship. Tamar's play-training approach is so gentle, even children can get involved.

Whether you use Tamar's methods to raise a puppy or teach an old dog new tricks, you'll love The Loved Dog.

CHAPTER TEN

THE POWER OF SIT

I consider "sit" the foundation of my work. It's the trunk of the tree, and all other behaviors are like branches growing outward from there. Many trainers think the first training step is to put a leash or choke chain around your dog's neck, take him outside, and teach him to heel. But if he doesn't even know how to sit, how will you get his attention in the midst of a million smells, sounds, and motions all distracting him, making you the least interesting influence in his environment? You must establish a connection with your dog, and the first step is teaching him how to sit. When your dog feels secure with you as his leader, he'll be happy to stay close and follow your lead as you introduce new challenges. Teaching your dog to sit without force or a leash is easy since it is something that he does naturally.

I recently worked with a two-month-old white Doberman puppy named Flash. I guess his owner, Eddie, was expecting a burly male trainer with a bag of torture devices and a rough demeanor. What he got instead was a petite woman with a bag of treats and a penchant for "making a party" every time his dog did something right.

"Does he know how to sit?" I asked, ignoring Eddie's obvious disappointment in meeting me.

Eddie sniffed. "Of course. There's no need to start there. Flash sits in every corner of the house all day long. I need him to learn to heel! When I take him for a walk, he pulls me down the street. How can I stop him?"

Since Eddie and his wife had three children, I crouched on the floor at the height of the youngest child and asked the dog to sit. He looked at me like he'd never heard the word before, since he thought that "sit" only happened when someone stood to face him. It took him twenty minutes, but when he finally got it, I went to town "making a party," feeding him a luscious jackpot and using my voice as if it were confetti.

"Flash didn't really know how to sit, did he?" asked Eddie sheepishly.

"No, he didn't," I said. "Do you see why I didn't want to take him outside to heel first? He needs the foundation of 'sit.' Then we can teach him anything."

I'm sure you can appreciate how amusing and satisfying it was to see Eddie, a grown man in a suit and tie, lying on the kitchen floor beside me, "making a party" for Flash!

I remember when I first picked up Duke from the vet and took him to Covenant House. Although he was excited to perform a variety of exercises, when we asked him to sit, he ignored us. I realized that his previously broken legs made sitting on request uncomfortable, so I showed the teens in the program how to do what I call "passive training." It requires no effort -- only awareness and treats.

Each time Duke sat on his own accord, we praised him with a treat and enthusiastically sang out the word "sit!" as if he had just climbed Mt. Everest. Kids are wonderfully open about using their voices melodically, and so after a few "singing lessons" with these talented young adults, with no force or pressure, Duke learned to sit when he was asked. What's more, sitting became his favorite thing to do, because he loved the big fuss they made.

Many years ago I went to observe a class that was held at a local pet store. One of the dogs, a German shepherd, refused to sit. While each owner was practicing with his own dog in the class area, the trainer decided to help the shepherd get over his "stubbornness." But no amount of choking, jerking his neck, or verbally commanding and shaming would convince the dog to sit. The trainer did every abusive thing she could think of, including poking and pushing with all her weight on the dog's rump. He still refused to sit, and after a stressful and violent session, he ended up biting the trainer on her hand. Fearing for the dog's life, I got his owner's number and called a few days later.

"How is your dog doing?" I asked.

"He's with the vet," said the owner.

"Why? Are you going to give him up?" I asked.

"No," the owner informed me. "He had an abscess on his rear end and he's getting treatment for it." The poor dog was suffering with a painful abscess, but he had no way to tell anyone. When he just couldn't take it anymore, he finally reverted to biting as self-preservation.

I've seen so many people turn the other way when their dog is giving them a clear message that something is wrong. I once watched a terribly disturbing segment on CNN that profiled a woman who sat by while a so-called dog trainer beat her seven-month-old German shepherd puppy to death because he was too rambunctious to obey. The owner said that the trainer gave her the following heads-up: "Your puppy may cry, try to escape, or pee when I'm training him, but that's all normal."

Give me a break! There is nothing normal about those behaviors. If you are doing everything right and your dog refuses to do something, don't beat him up. If he refuses to do something and there is no apparent reason why, I recommend taking your dog to the vet for a checkup. If he gets a clean bill of health, then take him home and start the training all over again. But you should never revert to pushing, shoving, or pressing on your dog to get him to sit. When you force your dog into a position, the stress involved will inhibit his ability to learn and figure it out for himself, not to mention the mental and physical abuse you are inflicting upon him.

THE MAGNET

The easiest way to teach a dog to sit is a method I call "the magnet." Hold a treat in your hand, covering it with your fingers. Make sure that nothing sticks out, so the dog can't steal it, and move it back over the dog's head, toward his tail. The dog will follow it with his head back as if your hand is a magnet. Because of the way a dog is built, lifting the treat from his nose up slightly toward the top of his head will get him to sit. In this kind and gentle way, I can instantly move 99.9 percent of dogs into the sit position without a word or a touch.

Holding the treat too high is a common mistake. One pointer's owner kept holding his hand so high above his dog's head that the dog had to jump to get to the treat. I found out pretty quickly that he was afraid that his dog would nip at him. As a result, every time the dog reached for the treat with his mouth, the owner jerked his hand back. The dog must have been thinking, This jumping business is fun! It's so easy to snatch that treat from you. As you can imagine, his jumping skills improved while his sitting skills all but disappeared. I needed to stop the work and focus on helping the owner get rid of his fears of being nipped. Then we had to change the hand signal for sit, since the dog thought that meant to jump on his owner. It took only one day to resolve this issue, and the pointer was well on his way to becoming a well-mannered dog. Remember that if you're doing the magnet and your dog is jumping to get the treat, you're probably holding your hand too high. If he's backing away instead of sitting, practice the sit against a wall, so he has nowhere to go.

Be encouraging, patient, and sweet throughout the learning process, and remember to keep your fingers securely wrapped around the treat. If even a corner is showing and available to your dog, he will try reaching up and grabbing it from underneath. Never underestimate his intelligence to figure out how to get what he wants. As soon as your dog sits, give him the treat and introduce him to the word "sit" in a happy singsong voice, repeating the word over and over: "Sit, sit, sit."

Like the example above, first I teach the pattern, and only afterward do I give it a name. Let your voice show your dog that you approve and are impressed with his genius behavior. Soon you'll see your dog thinking, Boy, am I a good people trainer! Each time I sit, I get a goody, so I'll do it as much as I can! Now your dog is asking you to train him! Kids as young as two or three can practice this. It will teach them to be calm around the dog, and it can help kids who are afraid of dogs to overcome their fears.

THE THREE LEVELS OF SIT

The lesson is not over once your dog has learned that "sit" means "putting his tush on the ground." As Eddie discovered with his Doberman, Flash, many dogs only respond to "sit" when their owner is standing up. Years ago, at a seminar for dog trainers, the instructor asked the participants to stand up and ask their dog to sit. The trainers scoffed at how ridiculous and elementary that request was. The feeling around the room was "Come on, we're professional dog trainers!"

Undeterred the instructor then asked everybody to lie down on the floor and tell their dog to sit. Can I tell you how many confused dogs were running around, trying to figure out what their owner was asking of them? The dogs thought that "sit" meant that when the person in front of them stood, they would drop their tushes to the ground. But if the owners didn't give them the usual physical cue, the dogs were confused. Even the most savvy of professional trainers can fall into the trap of thinking that he is teaching the dog one thing when in fact he is teaching him something else. This is why I advise you to generalize each exercise as much as possible. Your dog will learn to recognize the signal that you are giving him rather than just the context in which you usually give it.

If you wonder why on Earth you should teach your dog to sit while you're lying down, think about different scenarios in which you might be on the floor -- playing with your children, practicing your yoga routine, or hanging out on the lawn with friends. Wouldn't it be nice to enjoy what you're doing and know that you still have control as the leader? You'll never have to worry that your dog will climb all over you.

TEACH SIT FROM A STANDING POSITION

Since we need to train the dog to sit from all levels, let's start with the easiest -- the standing position. I always start with the easiest first, so the dog's success will bolster his confidence f...

A light treatment of familiar material
By citywulf
The first 50 pages of the book speak more about Tamar than about dogs, which has caused some to question whether this is a training book or an autobiography. However, the rest of the book is training. The bio part is light reading, but it doesn't add much to understanding her training philosophy. She talks about learning from watching wolves in the Israeli desert, but doesn't describe those observations in any detail (and what she does mention later suggests she has only a rudimentary understanding of wolf behavior). She talks about her parents' infidelity, which adds nothing to the book. It is short and harmless, however.

Her training section is also fairly lightweight, with short discussions of familiar positive training techniques. I have read dozens of training books, and this one feels like the author took different parts of many books, distilled them down, and put them in her own. Nothing is new, and nothing is discussed in any depth. The barking chapter, for example, only offers one technique. It simply doesn't add anything new to the positive training literature.

A beginner can glean some basics from this book. The methods are positive (though the author is a bit more balanced in that she does use verbal corrections - however, as in much of the book, she doesn't go into any detail describing them; she also mentions the importance of leadership). There is some silliness in here (she praises a dog by saying the behavior over and over in a happy voice - "sit sit sit sit sit" - how does this help the dog? You want your dog to respond to the word "sit" by sitting. Doesn't saying "sit" several times while the dog is actually sitting just confuse the issue? She also perpetuates the "eat something before you feed your dog" myth - unless you're eating from the same carcass, it really isn't important! You are the one providing the food, that's what really matters). But it is harmless silliness, and may lead newbies to other positive training books that have more detail (I highly recommend Outwitting Dogs: Revolutionary Techniques For Dog Training That Work!; [[ASIN:0793805481 Parenting Your Dog; It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet; and everybody should read The Other End of the Leash).

Easy to read, retain, and understand both "how to" and "why."
By A. P. Nessel
The book is a narrative about the author's life experiences that led her to become a dog advocate and trainer, and it is full of little stories and great examples that become an innuendo to how to teach a dog certain behaviors. Because of this unusual format for a training book, you not only remain interested, but also gain good understanding of why dogs behave the way they do. After having read this 200 page book, I was amazed how much I remembered. I was able to implement many tips without having to refer back to the book. Finally, it's worth mentioning that the book is very humorous and makes you laugh heartily.

Good method, but not revolutionary.......
By Seattle Dog Lover
I just wanted to say that I like and endorse using play and positive training methods and techniques for dog training as described in Tamar's book. And I think she is a wonderful person doing good work. However, I don't think there's anything new or revolutionary in this book that hasn't already been written in the last 10 years. Nor do I find it detailed or descriptive enough to really give readers a true understanding of dogs and why they do the things they do. There's brief moments and discussions about it, but it never goes deep enough to give the reader a real answer to why their dogs behave the way they do. Also, I find it disconcerting that she is so critical of other dog trainers, as if they are all abusive. I definitely agree that what she has witnessed in her years from some dog trainers was definitely abusive behavior. However, I believe that she was so affected by these events that it took her to the extreme opposite end of the training spectrum, thereby not providing the most balanced point of view.

I think that following the path of least resistance in dog training, and using as much positive reinforcement as you can are wonderful and things I definitely endorse highly. I just don't think that this book goes in depth enough to provide any information that's really new. So if you are looking for more of an introduction to dog training and would like to know about Tamar's story and how she became who she is today, then this would be a good book for you. But if you are looking for more in depth information that goes beyond a quick overview of basic training ideas, then look elsewhere, as this book really is more of an autobiography than a real dog training book.

Not a bad book

Transforming Professional Development into Student Results

Copyright Date: 2010
ISBN: 978-1-4166-0949-0
APA Citation: Reeves, D B. (2010). Transforming professional development into student results. Alexandria, VA: ASCD.

Reeves' purpose in writing this book was to help teachers, professional development leaders, school administrators, superintendents, board members, and policy makers create effective professional development.
The major theme of the book is that professional development as it exists now is not effective. Reeves thesis is that professional development suffers from a lack of focus and is therefore unsustainable in creating effect learning for students and teachers.

Reeves way of presenting his thesis is through persuasion with the first section of the book dedicated to what is wrong with professional development. Reeves then goes on to develop ideas of how to create effective professional development. Finally, in the third section of the book Reeves looks at how effective learning can be sustained.

The book is easy to read with ideas that follow a logical progression. I found myself agreeing with many of the points that Reeves made. One idea that particularly caught my eye was what Reeves calls The Law of Initiative Fatigue. The basic idea of this law is that there are three essential resources a school (teachers/administrators) has; time, money, and emotional energy. All of these resources are limited. The rule is that as the number of initiatives increase while the resources of time, money and emotional energy remain constant then each new initiative will receive less of each resource. This is something I have seen in schools where teachers just become worn down by the number of different new things they are having to "try/do", not to mention that many of these new initiatives receive little or no funding to implement them because of the "budget".

Reeves is a well-known author and according to The Leadership and Learning Center website (n.d.):
Dr. Douglas Reeves is the founder of The Leadership and Learning Center. He has worked with education, business, nonprofit, and government organizations throughout the world. The author of more than 20 books and many articles on leadership and organizational effectiveness, he has twice been named to the Harvard University Distinguished Authors Series. Dr. Reeves was named the Brock International Laureate for his contributions to education. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Parents Choice Award for his writing for children and parents.
The Leadership and Learning Center (n.d.) is also known for its work with the 90/90/90 schools, that is 90% poverty, 90% minority, and 90% meets or exceeds.

Section one of Reeves book is called "What's wrong with Professional Learning?" and is broken up into six chapters. These chapters look at a variety of topics such as accountability measures, high impact professional learning, initiative fatigue, school improvement plans, people and practices versus programs, and what Reeves calls scattershot learning. Reeves makes many good points in these chapters and identifies many things that most educators already "know" but don't necessarily know what to do about. One example of this would be the way Reeves relates accountability measures to an autopsy in which we identify the problem after it has already died - to late to be of any real use. Reeves identifies the characteristics of high-impact professional learning and the problem that most professional learning does not meet these characteristics. With school improvement plans has found that there are nine characteristics of effective plans and outlines them. In the chapter on people and practices versus programs Reeves uses McGuffey's readers as his example of how we should endeavor to make education challenging and engaging rather than just throwing another program at it. In calling professional learning scattershot Reeves refers to the idea of "but we did that last year" in professional development and suggests that schools need to become more focused in their approach to professional learning with less initiatives that are sustained and revisited over a longer period of time.

Section two is called "How to create high-impact professional learning" and comes in three chapters. The first chapter asks you to take a moment and think about professional learning in your school and your vision for the future. It also asks you to look at some specific areas evidence you would expect to see if that vision was achieved, how will you assess the learning of the adults involved? What kind of feedback you would expect to collect to be able to make decisions and specific formative feedback that will be provided. The second chapter hones in on focus, focus, focus. The overwhelming idea here is that schools need to get focused in their professional learning to improve teaching; improve curriculum and assessment; improve leadership. Schools need to look at the time they spend on activities and ask themselves are they really helping student achievement which is or should be the end goal for the school. Finally, Reeves makes a case for action research within the school. Reeves position is that action research can help to influence teachers' professional practice and develop teacher leadership within the school.

The third and final section is titled "How to sustain high-impact professional learning". Again Reeves has split this into three chapters - a nice balance in the book with six chapters on the negative and six positive. The first chapter in this section deals with the idea of train the trainer. Reeves suggests that we should move away from the idea of training which suggests teaching someone to perform tricks. Instead we should look to influence teachers practices by providing them with professional development and working them to implement the new learning into their classroom practices. The next chapter looks at teacher and leadership assessment which Reeves says is currently punitive rather than formative. Reeves position is that we should be looking to grow our teachers and leaders by providing them with formative feedback that gives them specific direction on ways in which they can improve as well as identifying the areas where they are performing well. Reeves also suggests that adult assessment be linked with student learning and takes into account the characteristics of effect school improvement planning. The last chapter of the book is a case study showing how all of the ideas from the book could be implemented in a school and the positive outcomes it could have.

The book also has two appendixes, the first being the results of a study into school planning, implementation, and monitoring. The second appendix is the Planning, Implementation and Monitoring (PIM(tm)) Rubric mentioned in the last section of the book.

Overall, this is an easy book to read and would generate some great discussion within a school, especially the first section which has a number of areas both teachers and leadership could identify with. An example of this would be the time spent on doing announcements in a school and how this time could easily be used better by just sending a note around.

Dr. Reeves Provides Clear Guidance on Effective Professional Development
By Julee R. Boeshart
Reeves, Douglas B. (2010). Transforming professional development into student results.
Alexandria, Virginia: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

This fast-reading, compelling, and even entertaining text for educational leaders by Dr. Douglas Reeves elucidates--and provides solutions for--a major problem in American education today: effective staff development. Staff development must affect student learning in discernible qualities and degrees if it is to be deemed effective. American education seems to be perpetually stuck in an Industrial Age assembly line-esque approach to both teaching students and teaching staff. Reeves asserts that professional development needs to fit any given student learning contextual situation; and, he substantiates this idea in the first chapter of the book entitled "What's Wrong with Professional Learning?" Of particular interest and importance to all educational leaders will be the most essential characteristic actions of every teacher:
*[to] understand the academic content in the current grade level and the next grade level;
*[to] provide feedback to students in a timely, accurate, and effective manner;
*[to] prepare lessons that are engaging, adaptive, and differentiated;
*[to] demonstrate an understanding of the individual needs of each student (p. 32).

The second part of the book provides concrete actions for educational leaders in order to create "high-impact" [on student learning] professional learning. Notably, Reeves spends time explaining and substantiating the need for a paradigm shift reading professional development and teaching. Basically, professional development needs to be job-embedded so that "...the focus on effective teaching,...is not about workshops or checklists, but about deliberate practice (p. 65). In addition, Reeves provides educational leaders clear guidance on how to be visionary and courageous and how to focus on curriculum and assessment to improve professional learning.
The last third of this highly beneficial read for educational leaders discusses a much ignored but much needed component of effective professional learning--sustaining it. Reeves points out the inherent flaws of the currently ubiquitous "train the trainers" model of professional development and offers viable alternatives to it. He finishes with a clear picture of how high-impact professional learning should actually look, sound, and feel.

Reeves concludes with an inspirational paragraph about "...undertaking the challenge of professional work with deep meaning and lifelong impact [for student learning" (p. 108), rather than professional development as being that which creates "...a life of efficiency and ease for teachers and leaders" (p. 108).
