Exactly the info I needed in a quickly useable form
By E. Thompson
I've read lots of books on differentiation that mention the needs of various learning styles. I can find all the information I need, if I wade through the dense paragraphs then translate it to a classroom application.

What I love about this book is it not only clearly enumerates the meaning behind executive functioning delays, but it then breaks them down into immediately useful approaches. It is the most immediately useful book I've come across in recent years, and it felt like it was directly speaking to the developing needs of students in the classroom.

A-Must-Read for principals, coaches, coordinators, teacher leaders and anyone supporting teachers
By Ms. G
This book is on point. As I plan to leave the classroom I am trying to equip myself with knowledge and strategies to help improve teacher practice. As a master teacher I have struggled with the things that Robyn points out in her book: I have asked for time to collaborate with like minded colleagues, I have asked to not be pulled for PD that doesn't benefit my needs, I have asked to attend PD outside of the district and all requests have fallen on deaf ears. My principal refuses to release me to find a suitable teaching environment and doesn't know how or want to take the time to meet my needs. This book is right on. I felt like I was in church bc I agreed with everything Robyn said with resounding Amens!

The Hemingway Patrols: Ernest Hemingway and His Hunt for U-Boats, by Terry Mort

A fascinating account of a dramatic, untold chapter in Ernest Hemingway's life -- his passionate pursuit of German U-boats during World War II From the summer of 1942 until the end of 1943, Ernest Hemingway actively patrolled the Gulf Stream and the waters off Cuba's north shore in his wooden fishing boat, Pilar, looking for German submarines. His patrols were supervised by the U.S. Navy and served as a part of antisubmarine warfare at a time when U-boat attacks were decimating Allied merchant shipping in the region. The huge, long-distance subs ultimately sank hundreds of ships in the Atlantic theater, killing thousands of seamen. They were deadly and efficient, and to confront them in a small wooden fishing vessel was to court instant annihilation. Yet Hemingway and his crew of friends were prepared to do just that. Armed with only grenades and submachine guns, they planned to attack any U-boat they encountered. While almost no attention has been paid to these patrols, other than casual mentions in standard biographies, they became the foundation of some of Hemingway's future work, especially The Old Man and the Sea and Islands in the Stream. Onshore, the patrols were a source of mounting friction between Hemingway and his wife, the writer Martha Gellhorn, who was brilliant, difficult, and skeptical of Hemingway's pursuit. Martha was not particularly beautiful but possessed that certain something that drove men -- Hemingway included -- to distraction. He had divorced his second wife to marry Martha, and yet by the time he began patrolling in Pilar, the love affair was doomed, perhaps pushing him more intently toward a confrontation with the U-boats. Terry Mort's incisive portrait of Hemingway is a combination of biography, military history, and literary commentary that draws not only from his work, letters, and wartime documents, but the unofficial yet highly revealing log of the Pilar, a calendar that Hemingwa

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, August 2009: The plan was as reckless as it was implausible: lure a German U-Boat to the surface, lob grenades into opened hatches, and speed away into a hero's sunset. Most men would be mocked for such a scheme, but in the hands of Ernest Hemingway, it was just crazy enough to work. In The Hemingway Patrols, Terry Mort explores the motivation behind this fascinating chapter in Hemingway's life. Proudly manning the helm of his beloved yacht, El Pilar, the legendary writer stalked the waters off Cuba during the early 1940s in search of enemy submarines. To the casual observer, it would seem that the line between the real and fictionalized worlds of Ernest Hemingway had become blurry (one can easily imagine Robert Jordan or Harry Morgan in the same role). Yet according to Mort, long-shot odds are precisely what fueled these missions. "Maybe the patrols were quixotic," he explains, "but that was part of their appeal--that and the sense of doing something useful and of being in command." The inherent dangers in hunting U-boats with a forty-foot yacht were inconsequential--what truly mattered was the adventure at hand. -- Dave Callanan

From Publishers Weekly
One of celebrated novelist Ernest Hemingway's more quixotic exploits opens a window into his soul in this sprightly biographical study. During WWII, Hemingway and a volunteer crew ran patrols on his boat, Pilar, looking for German submarines along the Cuban coast. They never found any, and his wife, Martha Gellhorn, whose eye-rolling presence pervades the book, deemed the operation just a grandiose excuse to go fishing and drink with cronies. Mort (The Reasonable Art of Fly Fishing) notes that U-boats were a real threat, though he allows that Hemingway's plan to attack with grenades and tommy guns could only have made the Germans die of laughter. Mort also gives an interesting rundown of the submarine war. But the patrols' real significance, in his estimation, lies in their resonance with Hemingway's imagination and literary oeuvre. The resulting analysis can be a bit blunt (the U-boats were the sharks in The Old Man and the Sea... the bulls in the ring at Pamplona). But this colorful, subtle portrait offers insights into Hemingway, making him as vivid as his fictional heroes, a tribe of romantic existentialists: domineering, brave, foolhardy, secretly vulnerable, larger than life. Review
"A unique biography of Ernest Hemingway's World War II experience. At first glance, Hemingway's decision to volunteer to hunt for German U-boats threatening mercantile ships in the Gulf Stream can be easily absorbed into the author's tough-guy image, especially considering that the "Pilar" was a fishing boat on which he could drink and boss other men around on the Navy's dime. Yet former Navy man Mort's portrait is far more nuanced. The author views these patrols as a synthesis of life and art, arguing that Hemingway embodied his own existential Hemingway Hero during these hunts -- or quests, as Hemingway himself preferred to call them. It was this quest that would shape much of Santiago's saga in "The Old Man and the Sea" -- and, to a lesser extent, "Islands in the Stream".... A rewarding read about the inner workings of an artistic mind -- solid fare for Hemingway enthusiasts looking for a fresh perspective." -- "Kirkus Reviews"

""The Hemingway Patrols" is modest in length and epic in scope. Writing in a limpid, economical prose that his subject would admire, Terry Mort tells the story of a little-known period in the life of one of America's greatest novelists and manages to weave all sorts of disparate threads into a harmonious whole. Descriptions of submarine warfare and naval battles alternate with insightful commentaries on Hemingway's art and career and portraits of his troubled marriage to his third wife, the fascinating Martha Gellhorn. There is even a poetic treatise on celestial navigation. Like a well-designed memory chip, this book crams an awful lot into a small space, and it does so with elegance and grace." -- Philip Caputo, author of "A Rumor of War" and "Acts of Faith"

The Hemingway Patrols: Ernest Hemingway and His Hunt for U-Boats

This is a fascinating book--no need to have a particular interest in either Hemingway or the U-Boat patrols that were conducted off of our shores during WWII to enjoy it. Terry Mort has a way of transporting the reader into the center of the story. I was immediately immersed in Hemingway's huge multi-faceted world from the beginning. I felt as if I were on board the Pilar anticipating a surprise confrontation with the enemy at any moment, or relaxing with "Papa" and friends in his favorite watering holes in Key West and Havana sharing lots of drinks and enjoying his colorful and often grandiose stories, or at home(s) with him and his family. By the end of the book, which came much too quickly, I felt as if I had been given the rarest of intimate and really true glimpses into this brilliant and complex man and his thoughts, feelings, relationships and adventures. I will probably pick this book up again soon as I am already missing my time with him and the huge life that he led.

Naked on an Open Sea
By Kevin Killian
If I hadn't just finished reading Mark Ott's so-called "eco-biography," A Sea of Change: Ernest Hemingway and the Gulf Stream--a Contextual Biography, then possibly I would have given Terry Mort's very similar book a higher review.

It actually has more biographical juice in it than the literary criticism of Ott, but both writers point to a Hemingway strangely similar to the John Steinbeck who was so fascinated with Doc Ricketts and the Sea of Cortez. That two of the great US novelists cared so much about the oceans and about undersea life is an odd coincidence, or maybe not a coincidence, for both men studied Thoreau and the proto-ecological movements of the previous century. Ott makes better use of the log Hemingway kept for the Pilar, showing how their formal qualities--the fragmentary denotation of nouns and adjectives as the watchers spotted a dolphin, for example, or encountered heavy rain--led to later changes in Hemingway's style--not all of them for the better. But here Mort is much mor knowledgeable about German U Boats and the dangers they posed to the Atlantic seaboard and to US naval efforts in general.

Almost as a subplot we have Martha Gellhorn and her bemused attitude towards Hemingway's defense action. She wrote, "Loving is a habit like another and requires something nearby for daily practice." Hemingway would have loved it if Martha had accompanied him on his U Boat expeditions, and maybe their marriage would have lasted longer if she wasn't so skeptical, but as Mort points out, Hemingway expected his disciples to toe the line 100 percent on all points or face his wrath, and Martha Gellhorn just wasn't built that way. Was she a careerist as some have charged? Certainly her alliance with Hemingway raised her profile no end, and she knew it.

Finally, Mort does expand our sense of Hemingway's quarrel with "honor." On the one hand he saw it as an antiquated concept responsible for the worst carnages of World War I; on the other, says Mort, he believed in T E Lawrence's line about "there could be no honor in a sure success, but much might be wrested from a sure defeat."

Great Read !
By Richard
As much WWII history - some with new information such as the 2002 discovery of the sunken U166 German submarine - as the weaving of literary criticism, the contexts of Hemingway's life and his hunt for U-boats. Was impressed that Scribner is the publisher - and could see why after reading it. As an amateur student of WW II's "Pacific War" and the air wars of Europe, I started to grasp a new understanding of WWII's merchant marine strategy and Atlantic submarine battle. The author's naval and Caribbean narratives were fresh, most readable and understandable. As a reader of Hemingway's novels with modest short story experience, I was fascinated how the author moved through Hemingway's early years, Paris and Spain to the Gulf Stream, Fifth Columns and the author's own takes on Hemingway. Most enjoyable - and informative.

As a teacher at an alternative high school catering to at-risk youth in the Detroit, MI area I am 100% supportive of the work Jon Erwin presents in this book. Combined with his previous book, The Classroom of Choice all teachers and school staff can witness an improvement in their school's overall culture by learning how to reach students where they are and understanding their basic needs. I have also had the honor of attending many professional development trainings by Jon and recommend his workshops and trainings for all schools. "We can t do that in our school district."
"I don t have time to add that to my curriculum."
We re fighting against impossible odds with these students."

Effective school leadership does not have to be a losing battle. In The Learning Leader: How to Focus School Improvement for Better Results, Douglas B. Reeves helps leadership teams go beyond excuses to capitalize on their strengths and reduce their weaknesses. He introduces the Leadership for Learning Framework, which challenges readers to consider that student achievement is more than a set of test scores. Reeves asserts that when leaders focus exclusively on results, they fail to measure and understand the importance of their own actions. Instead, he encourages leaders to use the Leadership for Learning Framework to look deeper into their results. The framework helps leaders distinguish between "Lucky" educators, who achieve high results but don't understand their actions, and "Leading" educators, who achieve high results and understand how their actions influence their success.

From conducting strategic planning to evaluating projects to organizing leadership teams, The Learning Leader will help leaders reconceptualize their leadership role and motivate their colleagues. Reeves urges teachers and administrators to become more efficient and focused leaders, but most important, he charges them to be better educators for their students.

Leadership: A Process for School Improvement
By UNO Student
The Learning Leader by Doug Reeves serves as a practical resource for a continuous school improvement process in schools. The book provides a leadership framework to assist organizations to build collective capacity and integrate actions to develop and sustain school improvement. The Leadership for Learning Framework featured in the book allows for school leaders to understand how adult actions within school improvement targets impact student achievement. The Framework serves as an analysis of why school improvement actions work or do not achieve the designated target. His Framework is about the overall process of improving teaching and learning; how to replicate success through the continuation of the "right" actions--do not leave this important process to mere chance or luck. It is a result of understanding and studying what works (actions) and why it produces such results (achievement gains).

The book outlines practical school improvement efforts common to highly functioning schools. They consist of the following: cause and effect of adult actions and student achievement results, focus on non-fiction writing, utilization of frequent common assessments, immediate and decisive interventions and constructive use of data--focus on the study of success. An area outlined in the book is the concept of a "knowing-doing" gap where educators often know what to do but are not able to implement or sustain an action or practice as intended. This limitation is often the result of associated myths (discussed within the text) underlying school improvement and the change process connected with school improvement efforts.

The framework discussed in the book is a common sense call to action where educators aspire to make a difference through a process to track actions and the corresponding results. This is a great book for a "summer read" as educators process the potential the coming school year represents regarding student success in their school. It is one of those books you will spend more time processing and grappling with than actual time spent reading.

The Learning Leader
By Robert T. Hess
The Learning Leader is one of the best books I have read when it comes to practical ideas about how to improve schools. In addition to exposing the truth about planning and stirring school leaders toward action and doing things that matter, Reeves also debunks our century old grading system and leads us toward proficiency models. He discusses several different types of leadership styles, and shows how schools and districts can create Improvement Science Fairs based upon data. In addition, he walks us through some practical data analysis tools including the Lucky, Loser, Learning, and Leader framework among others.

A bit technical in spots, but plenty of good stories (not just education ones), and lots of real life examples from the field make this book a must read for anyone serious about using data to help their school improve.

Kenny's provides the captivating center for a sprawling saga that reads like three books slowly tied together in which a collection of women discover their inner strength through adversity. Star Bluestone is a psychically gifted artist pondering her lost love for David Kenny, a poet who left her to run the family business. He married Ingrid Fitzgerald instead, who becomes a famous TV journalist. Ingrid is shattered when David suddenly dies of a heart attack and then shocked to learn about his romantic past with Star and his all too recent affair with the much younger Steffi. Into the mix, Kelly weaves other stories, including those of Ingrid's best friend, image guru Marcella Schmidt, and Kenny employee Charlie Fallon. The magical Star is the treasure of the book, heads above the rest of the conventional cast. She only appears a few times, yet becomes the lodestone for this poignant reminder of how once-in-a-lifetime-love transforms lives. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Ingrid Fitzgerald is a successful journalist with a beautiful family, but she feels as if she’s playing second fiddle to the other woman in her husband David’s life: Kenny’s Department Store, the centerpiece of the tiny Irish town of Ardagh. Now that her children are growing up and leaving the nest she finds herself torn between trying to spend time with her workaholic husband and throwing herself into her own work. But David is working so hard because Kenny’s Department Store might have to shut its doors. The closure of Kenny’s is a big deal not just to Ingrid and David but also to the staff, including Natalie in the café, Charlie Fallon at the cosmetics counter, and Star Bluestone, the local “witch” who sells her elaborate tapestries in the store and can see what’s happening long before anyone else does. Kelly, already a best-selling novelist in Ireland and England, presents a sensitive story about love, family, maturity, and finding your place, a tale sure to please readers everywhere. --Hilary Hatton

She's no Maeve Binchy
By Readerly
As a Maeve Binchy fan, people often recommend Cathy Kelly to me. I've never been able to make it through one of her books. This one, at least, I did finish, though that was largely because I needed to review it.

Using Kenny's department store as the center of the stories was enjoyable - I found it difficult to keep the storylines straight - there aren't an unmanageable number of main characters, but each has her own constellation of supporting characters with their own problems - Natalie's alcoholic friend Lizzy, Charlie's domineering mother, Ingrid's work cohorts - none of whom really matter.

Kelly's writing is more modern and younger, and perhaps then ineluctably crasser than Binchy, but more to the point, she doesn't have the gift of making characters I really care about, and though the lives of the characters in this novel are connected in a casual way, they don't have the coincidentally deep connections that make Binchy's writing such a delight.

So against Binchy, this book doesn't stand up, but it's not such a treat on its own either. It's predictable and easy to read, but I can't say I'd recommend it.

A good story..more substance than you might expect
By just kath
I received this book from the Amazon vine program. I would never have picked it up on my own for two reasons. One is the cover..terrible chic lit that says to me "keep away"! The title is another. There are other books with this title, and it too shouts chic lit. There is nothing wrong with fluff, chic lit etc. I do pic it up on purpose now and then. Most of the time, I just don't as it is not a favorite. I do like to keep fluffy books around for days when I need a fluffy read. Do not let these things deter you. Not if it is the story that matters to you.

Is this chic lit? Yes and No. It certainly has all of the aspects of chic lit. Girls, divorce, make up , shopping and so on. But the characters are much better rounded out, and the story is much richer than some of the chic lit I have read.

This is a story of women who live in a small town in Ireland. Small town all have one thing in common, it seems. Everyone either knows or knows about everyone else in town. I think what drew me in most was the character of Star. She felt like a kindred spirit.

I liked Charlie Fallon. She is one of those women who it would be very easy to dismiss as a young woman with little substance. She works in the make-up department of the Kenny department store. We find out just how wise and gentle this character really is when she grows a little and feels more comfortable in her own skin.

Kenny's is the basically the heart of the book. Many of the characters are involved in some way with the store or the family. David Kenny inherited the store from his parents and is struggling to keep it going during difficult financial times. His employees are like extended family and he knows how difficult it would be for them if he lost his battle to keep the store as is. The people who work for him appreciate this and know how lucky they are.

Ingrid is Davids wife. He has a son and a daughter, and they have friends and lives of their own that figure into this story. I enjoyed this story. I liked most of the characters and cared what happened to them. I also liked the way that acceptance was both a reality and a lesson.

If you are looking for a good story with likable characters, this is a book for you. I will be happy to read more from this writer. I also plan to gift copies to at least two people I know who will enjoy the story, and perhaps learn about acceptance.

Good read for a relaxing afternoon.

Very disappointing
By Dr W. Richards
Cathy Kelly is one of three authors on my Irish-writer 'autobuy list', the others being Marion Keyes and Maeve Binchy. It's very rare that I'm disappointed with any of these; they have a gift for creating interesting characters with fascinating interwoven storylines.

This book is an exception, however. I was hopeful given Marion Keyes' cover-quote saying that this is one of Kelly's best with wonderful characters. Not. Yes, Ingrid - the most prominent character, wife of Kenny's magnate David and host of a prime-time TV political talk-show - is likeable and interesting, but she's surrounded by others who really didn't appeal at all. For once, also, the various characters' stories didn't gel for me, and the book's structure did not hang together.

Characters such as Kitty, Dara, Lizzie and others were irritating and unsympathetic. David, Ingrid's husband, was too much of a cypher in the beginning for me to form any liking for him, and I'm left wondering what Ingrid ever saw in him. As for Star Bluestone, the proclaimed lodestone of the book, I could have done without her and her flaky second-sight mumbo-jumbo.

Sorry, Cathy Kelly, but this book was considerably below what I'm used to from you and will be finding its way to the nearest second-hand bookshop.

Neurodiversity in the Classroom: Strength-Based Strategies to Help Students with Special Needs Succeed in School and Life, by Thomas Armst

A new concept on human diversity has emerged over the past 10 years that promises to revolutionize the way educators provide services to students with special needs: neurodiversity. Just as we celebrate diversity in nature and cultures, so too do we need to honor the diversity of brains among our students who learn, think, and behave differently. In Neurodiversity in the Classroom, best-selling author Thomas Armstrong argues that we should embrace the strengths of such neurodiverse students to help them and their neurotypical peers thrive in school and beyond.

This innovative book focuses on five categories of special needs: learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders. For each category, Armstrong provides an in-depth discussion of
* The positive attributes associated with that category,
* Acclaimed neurodiverse adults who have excelled in their chosen fields,
* Computer programs and applications that allow students with special needs to overcome obstacles and achieve success,
* Rich networks of human resources both inside and outside of school that educators can draw upon to support the social and emotional lives of neurodiverse students,
* Innovative learning strategies that are tailored to each student's unique strengths,
* Future career paths for which a student s particular gifts might be a good fit,
* Modifications in the school environment that allow for seamless inclusion of neurodiverse students in the regular classroom, and
* Timely information about how to integrate the strategies and assessments for each category with the Common Core State Standards.

It's time that we focused on celebrating rather than pathologizing our students with special needs so that they can fully realize their potential in school and life. This practical and thought-provoking book will inspire teachers and administrators everywhere to make sure that all students with special needs get the support and strength-based instruction they deserve.

About the Author
Thomas M. Armstrong is a veteran of the early 1960s civil rights movement in his native Mississippi. He was at the forefront of early protests led by black Southerners for voting rights and equal public accommodations from 1958-1961, resulting in threats that had him running for his life. Mr. Armstrong moved to Chicago where he has resided since 1964. He remains closely allied with other former Freedom Riders and civil rights workers around the country and often speaks at schools and civic organizations such as the African American Leadership Roundtable in Chicago. He has been the subject of scholarly research by respected academics, sought after for major media interviews, and featured in print from critically acclaimed books to a Forbes magazine publication. The documentary "Freedom Riders" will be broadcast nationally on PBS in May 2011 and has been pre-screened at locations around the country from New York to Denver to Los Angeles. The movie is receiving rave reviews and Mr. Armstrong will be a featured panelist at well-publicized events where he will promote his memoir Autobiography of a Freedom Rider.

Good read
By Dana Cottrell
I love reading Dr. Armstrong's books, I think they are insightful and provide a new approach to educating those with diagnosed disabilities. This text is a lot of repetitive information from his previous text on neurodiversity and I think his positive niche scenarios are a bit pie-in-the-sky, but still worthy goals. If you have the previous text, there is not much new here.

fabulous read for teachers of all levels
By alicia eberle
It really opens your mind to ways of thinking of students in the classroom, especially those labeled special education. I highly recommend it. I purchased it on kindle and found that format to be easy to read.

A Great Help
By Julie Reynolds-Otrugman
Having a son who falls into the category of hard-to-categorize and having taught Adult Basic Skills for years with always present questions about how to help people who definitely don't snug neatly into the norm, this book helped me to have a paradigm shift on the subject. I am able now to think "highly creative" about ADHD students, which was wonderfully freeing for me.
