About the Author
Sylvia Browne grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and revealed her psychic gift at the age of three, announcing that her grandfather was dead (he was) and predicting she would have a baby sister in three years (she did). Browne began her professional career in 1973 with a small meeting in her home. Within a year Browne’s practice had grown so much that she incorporated the business as the Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research.

Animals in Our Lives

For my entire career as a professional psychic, people have come to me asking questions about everything in their lives -- their jobs, their families, their relationships, and their futures. But one question comes up time and again: What happens to my beloved pet when he dies? People want to be assured that their dog or cat or bird or horse -- creatures they love just as much as any human in their life -- will find peace in the afterlife.

I am here to tell you that all pets do go to heaven. I will also explain to you the extraordinary abilities that pets have here on earth that we're just beginning to understand and acknowledge. These abilities lead us to amazing stories of the bonds between humans and the animals they love, experiences with animals both in this world and on the Other Side, which reaffirm the remarkable relationships we have with our precious pets.

Since before recorded history, humankind has always had a relationship with animals, whether it was for sustenance, protection, worship, or to give service. Gradually over time many of the animals encountered by humans were domesticated and formed either a loving partnership with us as pets or were put into service to help humankind in its work or as a food source. We even see when animals are taken to visit the elderly how that person's blood pressure goes down and any depression subsides. I'm convinced animals can neutralize negative energy without ever absorbing it as we do. That's why I've even referred to them as a form of guardian angel on this planet.

The stories that follow will show the different facets of what animals do and can do and how sentient they are. Whether it's just your dear pet and protectorate or your own totem (which we will get to later), we will see how animals have saved lives and even see and feel things that we cannot see or feel such as seeing spirits or alerting us to fire or even earthquakes long before we are aware of such things. Humankind has just begun to scratch the surface of the great intelligence our animals have, and hopefully you will get a deeper insight into the sometimes complex minds of our beloved friends in the animal kingdom. This book will explore through research as well as personal stories the help, bravery, love, and loyalty these wondrous creatures afford us.

When We Lose a Pet

Most animal lovers have a pet, and those pets quickly become a part of their families. When a beloved pet passes away, a huge void is left in your family, not to mention your heart. It makes me furious when someone is grieving over the loss of a pet and they hear the words, "Well, after all it was only an animal!" When these words have been uttered to me, rather than froth at the mouth I usually try to simply walk away. As I've grown older I've tried to be more tolerant and say to myself that these people just don't know; they are simply ignorant of the love and richness that our pets lend to our lives.

We will expand on the subject of pet loss later, but right now I want to tell you about my Jolie. Jolie was a West Highland terrier and the most active, funny, and caring dog I have ever known. She was one of my dearest pets, and I had her for nine wonderful years. One day I got a call at work that Jolie had suddenly keeled over and was nonresponsive. My youngest, psychic son, Chris, ran over and gave her some resuscitation by pushing on her rib cage, and by the time I got home she was sitting up, but with a glazed look on her face. I immediately noticed she was terribly bloated, and we raced her to the vet. After a whole battery of tests he told me grimly that the news wasn't good. Jolie was suffering from severe heart failure. He explained that the symptoms are similar to those experienced by people who have heart attacks or strokes. Jolie, he said, was filling up with water so fast she would drown in her own fluid. I had to put her to sleep. He suggested that I leave the room, but I wouldn't -- I wanted my eyes to be the last thing Jolie saw.

The shot was administered, and I truly felt like she was saying, it's okay Mom, I'll see you again and I love you. "I love you Jolie," I sobbed. "Wait for me." I knew she would because animals don't reincarnate -- they don't have to. They don't need to learn lessons of life like we do. They are just pure entities sent from God. I watched a white and condensed smokelike form leave her body and go straight across the room. The souls of animals don't have to go up because heaven (or the Other Side) is on this level, just in another dimension, with the same topography we have here except for the beautiful gardens, meadows, and temples. (We'll talk more about the Other Side later in this book.) In my psychic vision I could see Jolie romping through a garden of daffodils and playing and meeting my other dogs that had gone before. This gave me some small comfort, but as with all grief I felt cheated. I was glad she was happy, but selfishly I wanted her with me. Still, I knew she was happy, and I knew I'd see her again someday.

Our first teacher is our own heart.

The hole our animals leave when they go is immeasurable, and even though life goes on (just as it does when any loved one leaves you), so many things remind you of them. No one meeting you at the door...the toys that are still around...even the empty food dishes seem like stark reminders of your missing friend. After Jolie passed, I just preferred to leave everything the way it was for awhile because honestly, I couldn't stand to get rid of the last vestiges of her. Yes, I did feel her around jumping on the bed and brushing against my leg, and several times I actually saw a little white blur in the backyard that I knew was my Jolie. But this loss hit me particularly hard, and I truly felt likejust going to bed.

You don't, of course. You get up, you keep living your life, and when time goes by other dogs or pets take the place of your beloved pet. But no matter how much time goes by, that animal will always have a special place in your heart. Later on I'll share more of my own stories of pet love and loss, and you'll also read the remarkable stories of other people who have wondrous tales about their beloved pets, some poignant and sad, some inspiring in their bravery and protection, still others amazing tales of communication and love, but all of them truly moving andwondrous.

When Our Pets Perform Extraordinary Acts

Presently I have four dogs, but when I was younger I had cats. Both types of animals have their own distinct personalities and I love each of them in their own special way. I have had so many dogs in my seventy-two years of life that it's hard to even remember all of the breeds -- German shepherds, dachshunds, West Highland terriers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Great Danes, Lhasa Apsos, Shar-Peis, Labradoodles, golden retrievers, Bijon Frises, Shih Tzus, English bulldogs, Labradors, Yorkshire terriers, not to mention a number of beloved mutts of mixed breeding -- each one holding a special place in my heart, and each one with a distinct personality of their own. I still have some of my beloved dogs, but over the years I have lost many pets that were dear to me. The truth is, many times I've loved my animals more than some people in my life! An animal's loyalty is unfaltering, and a pet doesn't care how you look or what mood you're in; they just love you unconditionally, which we could all really learn from!

My dear grandmother (who was a psychic in her own right and very well known in Kansas City, Missouri) used to say if you find someone who doesn't like animals, children, or music...run. Over all the years I have found this to be usually true, especially with those who don't like animals.

One amazing story my grandmother told me was an event her family witnessed secondhand, a tale that was told for years in their small community. My grandmother was born in Germany, but her family had made its way to the United States when she was very young, first to Texas and then to Springfield, Missouri, where the winters were horrendous. When I was a girl in that part of the world, we were literally snowbound for days at a time by the ferocity of winter storms (not anything like the milder winters experienced in that part of the world today, which as an aside supports the Greenhouse Theory!).

There was a family that lived next door to my grandmother's family, and they stepped out just a short distance away from home to get supplies one cold winter day and left their sleeping baby with their German shepherd, who really was like a watchful nanny to the baby. They intended to be gone just a few minutes, but while they were gone a sudden terrible snowstorm hit. It was the type of storm we used to call a whiteout -- you literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face. After many hours the family finally made their way back to their house, and when they walked in, the baby's crib was empty. The house was freezing cold because the heat had dissipated in their absence. The German shepherd was cringing and whimpering under the bed. The husband in fear and dread deduced (as did the wife) that the dog had harmed the baby out of hunger or even fear of abandonment. The husband, out of his mind with grief, got his rifle and aimed it at the dog's head. Just as he cocked it to shoot they heard a faint cry. They looked under the bed and there was the baby cuddled up to the dog to keep it warm. The dog, realizing the peril of the baby possibly freezing to death, had lifted the baby and put it under the bed, wrapping its warm body around the child to keep it from freezing. My grandmother said the woman never quit talking about how horrible it would have been if they had killed the dog that saved their baby from freezing.

Good but a rehash of her other books

Overall, the book is interesting. I love Sylvia and have read most of her books. Some of the things I did not enjoy about it: the first 1/4 (approximately) of the book is a complete rehash of her other books. Also, it discusses at length pets in ancient times which I found not so interesting as it is common knowledge that everyone loves their pets, even ancient people. It did not relate to pets on the otherside. It seemed like it took quite a while to get to the "meat and potatoes" of the topic of pets on the OTHERSIDE. Sylvia also had a tendency to rely heavily on pet stories that readers submitted to her on her website. I guess I was hoping to hear more from Sylvia and not just her readers. Don't get me wrong, the book is still very enjoyable, especially if you have lost a beloved pet. I miss my pets and this book put me at ease and was a tear-jerker (in a good way). It would make a good gift for someone who misses a pet. Happy reading!

Wonderful, Comforting Book!

Sylvia has done it again! I purchased this book after my 12 yr. old Shih-Tzu passed. Looking for answers, I found them in this book. Sylvia has such a natural way to explain the unexplained, I felt confident that my dearly loved pet is in a better place after I read this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a pet and is looking for answers to questions. This book warmed my heart!

Uplifting & Comforting

I just lost my 4th German shepherd boy, Skylar, nearly 3 weeks ago. He was my baby who became the man of the house and my protector after outliving his daddy (my husband George) and his other 3 siblings(3 German shepherd girls). We comforted and depended on each other as we began our new lives together. Since Skylar has been gone, I've been feeling so alone. Even though I've made new friends and they all got to know and love Skylar, life just isn't the same.

I always find myself reading multiple books on grieving and the afterlife after losing a loved one, in order to find comfort. This book was the icing on the cake. It completely reassured me that all of our fur-angels are all in heaven waiting for us. Although it feels like another lifetime to us, to them, it feels like only a few moments. It also validates everything I've read in the past on this subject: animals and the afterlife, or about the afterlife in general. In fact, it even triggered memories about my own fur-angels who have done some amazing things. After reading this book, I'm finally comforted and at peace.

There is a naive notion in the educational world that differentiation implies individualization -- far from the truth as Tomlinson weaves her experiences as a teacher in a manner than adds texture and validity to the notion of differentiation for groups of students while still meeting individual learning needs. This approach was not invented to "make a buck". It is an outgrowth of teaching experiences that led Tomlinson and others to the conclusion that students learn at different rates, using different styles, and expressing different needs.
Dr. Tomlinson supplies the reader with several ready-made examples that can be applied immediately in your classroom. There is no need to give up one's personal life to successfully differentiate instruction. Tomlinson suggests beginning slowly and moving at your own rate - always respectful of the magnitude and breadth of the teacher's job.
Carol Ann Tomlinson leads an annual summer workshop on differentiation at the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia. Along with many other leaders in the field of differentiation for mixed ability classrooms, Tomlinson shares with teachers the reality of successfully reaching the varied needs of learners of today. This book by Tomlinson is Differentiation 101 -- a classic source for all educators

As a teacher, I have read this book twice: once (1st ed) as "assigned summer reading" for our school's professional development, and most recently (2nd edition) as assigned reading for a class for a masters in curriculum and development for teacher leadership on Differentiated Instruction.

No question, ANY teacher learning about differentiated instruction should read Tomlinson -- she is not only one of the primary experts in the area, but she is engaging and readable. While we know teachers are far from lazy about reading (!), they ARE very limited on time, so I say this in all practicality: it is a fast and accessible read with insights that can be put to immediate use. There are a range of books on differentiation by Tomlinson or by others; this title is a good overall entry point to the subject, appropriate for anyone new or intermediate to the subject, or reviewing existing practices. There are other books in Tomlinson's series on differentiation that present more specific strategies for targeted aspects of differentiation; this book is more overview than specific "how to" approaches.

In that sense, I recommend this title as a "Differentiation 101" introduction, but I do have other titles that I have found more useful, once I read further. For example, Tomlinson's book on writing rubrics, or subject/grade area titles offer more specific instructions for daily use. I also recommend anything by Rick Wormeli.

As much as this book is the "go to" text on differentiation, I found that I was looking for less theory and more on how to identify individual student needs to match them with need-specific approaches. In this sense, I preferred. the book Carol Ann Tomlinson co-wrote with David Sousa: Differentiation and the Brain: How Neuroscience Supports the Learner-Friendly Classroom. My other absolute favorite for identifying and solving individual student needs s M. Searle's Causes and Cures in the Classroom.

This arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I needed it for a class, but I think I'm going to hold on to it and refer to it for years to come. There is a lot of inspiring stuff in here as well as excellent ideas for teaching.

The Best Cookbook Ever!

I've never posted a review before, however I had to post one for this book because it is fantastic. I have tons and tons of cookbooks but this one surpasses them all. I purchased the book a while ago and have prepared many meals. I'm pretty good at following recipes, but depending on the creator and how well the preparer follows the recipe, will of course determine how tasty the meal will turn out. My point is that even though you follow a recipe to the letter, if the creator is not such a good cook (even though they have published a cookbook) the meals could turn out yucky! That is not the case with the Sassy Girls...these ladies can cook; every one of the recipes in this cookbook comes out perfectly delicious every single time. I get so many compliments when I prepare meals...I love it! I would recommend this cookbook to anyone, because even the worst cook will be a gourmet chef for a day.

This is definitely going to become a favorite cookbook for me. I have only tried one recipe (stuffed mushrooms) for a get together potluck at my house. They were DELICIOUS and everyone loved them. I also have their "Guide to the Power of Cuisine: Perfect Recipes for Spicing Up Your Love Life" book and have tried several recipes in that one. They were all fantastic. So I'm assuming the same will be true for other recipes in this book. I have to use these recipes moderately because they are super tasty though not very healthy. My husband and I have gained so much weight eating these recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lots of creams, butter, and bacon grease but sooooo good lol!!

This is the second book I've owned from the Get 'Em girls. Like the first one, it did not disappoint. Makes me want to grab a bunch of people and invite them over for a stupdendous meal.

Well-written, succinct, and timely

Frontier and Rickabaugh have analyzed many studies and meta-analyses and written a book that helps answer the question educators have been asking in recent years: with so many "good" ideas in education, how can we leverage the best ones to improve student outcomes? They use the analogy of a lever. More specifically, their term "leverage advantage" explains what factors are most likely to improve student learning. They explain that five levers (structure, sample, standards, strategy, and self) can be used to affect student outcomes. Their premise is basically that we often focus too much on structure (scheduling, one-to-one computing, class size reduction) and sample (student groupings, tracks, etc.), do not fully utilize standards, and under-use effective strategies and concepts of self (teacher and student views of learning). They also succinctly explain what John Hattie and Robert Marzano have found in their massive meta-analyses of practices that affect learning. Most importantly, the book does not tout ideas that have not been firmly grounded in recent educational research. It does not promote any particular magic solution to increase student achievement. The common core standards are barely mentioned. But that's not the point. We have decades of excellent research to guide us, and you can find most of the basic tried and true best practices in this short (165 pages plus appendices and references) book. I read it in one day. This is the best book for any school or district administrator to read if he/she is in the process of acquiring and aligning school resources. It would also be fantastic for a school leadership team to review.

Note: it may seem a bit overpriced, but I found it to be more than worth it!

An outstanding read for all educators

Absolutely phenomenal! While I know many of the big picture concepts, the book makes powerful connections between changes that hope to improve schools and whether those changes really improve student learning. I've seen many leveraging errors in my time as a teacher, and feel that every educator should read this book. The links between strategy, sample, structure, self, and standards might seem intuitive, but seeing them clearly stated with examples really opened my eyes to why some initiatives that seemed like they'd be beneficial have failed miserably. This book is a quick read, but filled with great insight.

About the Author
Nancy Frey, Ph.D., a Professor at San Diego State University received the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference. Dr. Frey has published in The Reading Teacher, English Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Educational Leadership. She has co-authored more than fifty books on English Learners (Language Learners in the English Classroom), assessment (Checking for Understanding), writing (Scaffolded Writing Instruction), literacy (Reading for Information in Elementary School) and vocabulary (Learning Words Inside and Out). Dr. Frey teaches a variety of courses on reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. She also was a third grade classroom teacher.

This book is suggested for any teacher who may be working at a school in a district that is considered to be under program imporvoment. Good Text for my Purposes at Work: ESOL

I needed more research on ESOL. This work on techniques and methods for ESOL students and our means to produce sustainable and meaningful talking points is sound. I already knew all of this, but when presenting trainings, this text presents the material well. No more turn and talk for ELs who are beginning! Ugh! Hate what 'all" teachers do for 'all' students 'all' the time.

When is differentiation really going to hit home? If you need a text to help you show, simply, a set of methods to deliver accountable talk to ELs and "all" students, I felt this was sound and targeted.

The Professional Amateur

Magazine writer A.J. Jacobs calls it "experiential journalism." He takes on seemingly ridiculous, yet intriguing, challenges. He reads the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. He lives the Bible, even the apparently trivial parts, such as not shaving your face. He outsources his life to a team of personal assistants in India.

He learns along the way and shares his discoveries. It's very entertaining. Jacobs has an easygoing and, for someone who writes almost exclusively in first person, surprisingly non-egotistical style. He works hard at his projects, preparing ahead, and doing research throughout. He's a real pro at being an amateur.

In his latest undertaking, he attempts to become healthy. This is more difficult than it sounds. He plans to go from slightly overweight and out of shape to heroic fitness. And that's not all. He also intends to improve the condition of all of his body parts: skin, nose, hands, etc. All this in two years!

One of the first roadblocks he runs into is the sheer volume of information and theories on how to be fit. The second obstacle is that much of the information is contradictory. There is no agreed upon, guaranteed path to health. Even trusted experts don't agree with one another.

But the main impediment to super health is self control. No surprise there. Jacobs manages to overcome the problem with a variety of methods. When he has trouble giving up a favorite snack, he writes a large check to the American Nazi Party and vows to mail it next time he gives in to temptation. He finds this kind of negative motivation very powerful.

Another trick that works for Jacobs, though not as dramatically effective as the negative motivation, is to digitally age a photo of himself (there's an app for that) so that he can better imagine himself in the future. Being able to picture his future self ("old A.J.") helps him to stick to his goals.

He also finds inspiration in two examples in their nineties - his own grandfather who remained involved in community affairs long after his formal retirement, and fitness expert Jack La Lanne, who kept a busy professional schedule, spreading the word about healthy living, right to the end.

I'm starting to get a little tired of this

I'm probably Jacobs' biggest fan. I have all of this books and have read, I think, all of his articles. With nearly every other author, I am loth to paid extra money for hardback and will simply wait until the book comes out in paperback. With Jacobs, however, I will immediately pre-order through Amazon as soon as I hear that he's about to publish a new book.

However, I think I've turned a corner with Jacobs and am starting to tire of his approach.

This book, while it was interesting and a page-turner, is something I would never read again.

Basically, Jacobs tries to be as healthy as possible for two years, trying out various philosophies and strictures of the health movement.

Although this "I did something kooky for a while and now I'm writing a popular book about it"-approach worked with the Bible thing, the George Washington thing, the cognitive biases thing, etc., it doesn't work so well with this material.

In short, I guess I was disappointed with this book and am starting to run out of patience with Jacobs. I accuse him of not treating his material fairly (at least here) and not taking his material seriously.

This project should have taken him 5 years, but instead he rushed through it in just two. Unlike Jacob's previous outings, you get the feeling on nearly every page that his real goal was to write and sell a book, not seriously explore the different philosophies, which is what really interests the reader.

Specifically, a lot of the health, diet, and wellness approaches required more than a friggin' afternoon to really take on board! I'm sure that the proponents of these various approaches -- almost to a man -- are probably frustrated with the book and feel that Jacobs sold them short. Like I'm so sure you can try a Macrobiotic diet for 3 days and start drawing conclusions about it.

One exercise philosophy that's looked at, for example, is the "Paleo" workout: basically imitating the exercises that cavemen would have engaged in.

Interesting. But Jacobs works out with them for about two hours and never sees them again. I'm sure that those guys, not to mention the other proponents, would say that you didn't give us a fair chance. Our approach takes weeks -- sometimes months -- before it starts bearing fruit in your life.

And then there are directly conflicting philosophies; Jacobs cannot possibly do justice to them both. One holds than men should retain their "essence;" another, than men should spill their "essence" as often as possible. You try out one for a few days and think you've made a fair (or even an informative) go of things?

Since Jacobs is rushing through hundreds of different philosophies and approaches in about two years, you get the feeling that he never really gives anything a fair chance to improve his health. At least with the Bible thing, you got the feeling he was seriously interested in dispassionately investigating to what extent it was possible to live as literally as possible by the Bible. And when the project was done, we learned something: 1) No; it isn't: at some point, you have to make judgment calls; and 2) Rituals influence your mind.

But with the wellness thing, you get the feeling he's simply not serious about investigating anything, so the book ends up being unsatisfying.

I never thought I'd use that word to describe a Jacobs book, but there you go.

Some of the details that AJ Jacobs presents in his first-person study of a hypochondriac's guide to staying healthy are funny and delightful. An example is how if people don't like germs they also don't like foreigners:

"[Two scientists] argue that the more obsessed you are with germs, the more politically conservative you become...They conducted an experiment in which they asked subjects about their 'moral, social and fiscal' attitudes. 'Merely standing near a hand-sanitizing dispenser led people to report more conservative political beliefs,' they write. 'Apparently, the slightest signal that germs might be present is enough to shift political attitudes toward the right.'"

That is funny, and interesting. But the majority of the tidbits and trivia that AJ Jacobs present are not. In fact, a lot of the activities that AJ Jacob engages or researches for this book seem very fringe, and we soon get the distinct sense that a lot of the health fads out there are merely a manifestation of people's psychological disorders. Before it was hip to do drugs, get into indie punk music, or be an anorexic if you were psychologically troubled -- nowadays, it's hip to be a vegan, run triathlons, and just outright starve yourself.

I'm reading this book simply because I really enjoyed AJ Jacobs' "The Know-It-All," which I found cute and endearing. "Drop Dead Healthy" is just plain annoying. In "The Know-It-All," AJ Jacobs had a self-deprecating humorous tone -- in this book, he can be outright condescending. In "The Know-It-All" we learn how perfect his wife is, and we can appreciate how lucky he is to have found his soulmate. But in "Drop Dead Healthy" we're introduced to his perfect kids and perfect grandfather and perfect aunt and it's all a bit too much to take.
