So useful
By Recent Grad
I was blown away by some of the ideas in this book. If you are intrigued by the concept of differentiation, but feel like you need more practical guidance than some of Tomlinson's other books offer, snatch this one up. As an English teacher, I found the Macbeth unit plan invaluable. The downside is that only a few of the units are likely to be applicable to any one teacher's course schedule. But even if there is only one unit for your subject area, it's probably worth the splurge. Or, if you don't mind sharing, you could split it with teacher friends who are just as passionate about reevaluating our current practices and doing what's truly best for each student.

Perfect for the High School Teacher
By Kindle Customer
Having study the differential instructional booklets as part of my master's, I could only find materials for the elementary school age. Those lessons were not as useful as you cannot always trust students at the high school level to stay on task and to move into the appropriate group. However, the lessons and the unit plans in this book allows you to focus on the same standards without splitting the groups apart and allowing students to get involve in their learning process. I would recommend this book to anyone who is teaching in a diverse school where the learning levels are spread apart.

A Blue and Gray Christmas (Ladies of Covington), by Joan Medlicott

In this stunning holiday story, a cache of Civil War-era letters and diaries sweeps the ladies of Covington up into a dramatic and heartwarming historical saga that inspires them to plan an unforgettable Christmas for two families forever changed by war.

When a rusty old tin box is unearthed at the Covington Homestead, longtime housemates Grace, Amelia, and Hannah discover that it contains letters and diaries written by two Civil War soldiers, one Union and one Confederate.

The friends are captivated by the drama revealed. The soldiers were found dying on a nearby battlefi eld by an old woman. She nursed them back to health, hiding them from bounty hunters seeking deserters. At the end of the war the men chose to stay in Covington, caring for their rescuer as she grew frail. But while their lives were rich, they still felt homesick and guilty for never contacting the families they'd left behind.

Christmas is coming, and the letters inspire Amelia with a generous impulse. What if she and her friends were to fi nd the two soldiers' descendants and invite them to Covington to meet? What better holiday gift could there be than the truth about these two heroic men and their dramatic shared fate? With little time left, the ladies spring into action to track down the men's families in Connecticut and the Carolinas, and to make preparations in Covington for their most memorable, most historic Christmas yet.

A fantastic Civil War story told from the soldiers' perspective.
By Huntress Reviews
This is the story of two soldiers, Tom and John, during the Civil War and the dramatic turn their lives took after they were wounded and left for dead on a battlefield in North Carolina. Tom was a Confederate rebel, as Southern soldiers were known then, and John was a Union soldier from Connecticut. The thing that makes this story meaningful is the fact that the Covington ladies (Hannah Parrish Maxwell, Grace Singleton and Amelia Declose) became very involved with finding these soldiers' descendents over one hundred years later.

The ladies discovered the extraordinary lives of Tom and John when they opened a box that Hannah's husband, Max, had found at an excavation site. This box was muddy, battered, made of tin, and obviously very old. It was the size of two large shoeboxes and held journals and letters written by Tom and John - letters that contained names and relevant information of relatives in 1864, but were clearly never intended to be mailed home. The oddity, and the thing that drew the attention of the ladies, was the fact that it had been locked and buried all these years.

Crumbling letters, lifted from the box, tell how Tom and John were found and rescued from a gruesome battlefield by elderly Miss Ella Mae Evans, as she searched among the dead and dying for her own grandson who was killed in that battle. In an old straw filled wagon, Miss Ella Mae took the two men, feverish and in terrible pain from their wounds and broken bones, to her own home in the hills of North Carolina. It was there where she saved them from the bounty hunters, always on the prowl for deserters, and nursed them back to health.

As months passed and the end of the war was near, both men regained their strength and decided to repay Miss Ella Mae's kindness by staying and caring for her as long as she lived. Although their lives were happy and full, they always grieved for the families they left behind.

As they continued to pour over the letters and journals for many weeks, the ladies began to feel a deep affinity for the two men who had written them. Because of this, they felt compelled to delve into the unknown world of genealogy and find some of their descendants. Their motive was to bring them together in Covington for an exciting and wonderful Christmas they would never forget.

***** FIVE STARS! This is a fantastic Civil War story told from the soldiers' perspective and is probably one of the best I have ever read! It had a ring of authenticity about it, and it completely held my interest all the way through. To say I thoroughly enjoyed it would be to put it mildly. I enjoyed it tremendously! The soldiers' letters were undeniably appealing - descriptive, touching, and heartbreaking. A Blue and Gray Christmas is surely one of the best books Joan Medlicott has ever written! *****

The best book in this series
By Karen Potts
In this entry in the Covington series, the three housemates, Grace, Amelia and Hannah, discover a box which contains letters written by two Civil War veterans, one fighting for the Union and the other for the Confederacy. The women begin to read the letters and they become very involved in their stories. They do some geneological research and discover where some of the men's modern-day descendants live. This is a very good Christmas story and, in my opinion, it is the best book in this series.

refreshing and entertaining
By A Customer
At Covington, Max brings in a box containing letters and journals that had been buried until Frank Hays' backhoe dug it up. He gives the box to the ladies (his wife Hannah Parrish Maxwell, Grace Singleton and Amelia Declose) believing they might enjoy the contents.

The authors were Tom a Confederate soldier and John a Union soldier left to die in a pit in 1864. One from he South and one from Connecticut, but elderly angel Miss Ella Mae nurses both of them and conceals them from bounty hunters seeking deserters. Feeling an affinity, to the past, the three Covington women try to bring together descendents of Tom and John.

Although refreshing and entertaining, the story line is too sugary especially in the present, but even in the last year of the Civil War, the sweetening feels out of place. Still the cast is solid especially the three Covington women and the three heroes of 1864 who come alive through their writings. With a strong refreshing premise, fans of the series will relish A Blue and Grey Christmas; others might find the glucose too high.

Jenny Cain was thrilled about the Liberty Harbor Restoration, a picturesque collection of shops, museums and restaurants. But when a runaway truck barreled into the project committee, it seemed someone in Port Frederick was out to sink Liberty Harbor. Then a wooden cross raised in unholy wrath made the message clear. Murderously clear. As director of the town's Civic Foundation, Jenny should have been glad when police detective Geof Bushfield reeled in a prime suspect. Unfortunately, it was the one person she was desperate to prove innocent. Fishing for a ruthless killer, she had to bait her trap fast - before the cold New England waters closed in over her own head!

There are an astonishing number of murders per capita in the seacoast city of Port Frederick, Massachusetts. Fortunately, there's also Jenny Cain, foundation director and amateur sleuth, to solve them. The latest in this series concerns a commercial waterfront development and those whose lives are affected by it. Dialect is much easier to listen to than read, and Shea provides a range--Yankee, Southern and European--which runs counterpoint to her own first-person inflectionless narrative. A committee meeting shows her at her best. Plenty of red herrings swim in this mystery, but Shea as Jenny capably hooks the real predator. J.B.G. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Not as good as some...
By Karen P.
I have to confess... to disappointment in this case. Of the half dozen or so Nancy Pickard/Jenny Cain mysteries I've devoured, this was definitely my least favorite. (For what it's worth, I.O.U. is at the top of my list!) It's hard to say what about the book didn't set well with me. The characters involved in the waterfront development project were simply difficult to like, difficult to become invested in. Nancy Pickard's character development is always good; unfortunately, that talent didn't serve me well in this particular case. I did like the conclusion of the tale, just didn't enjoy the journey as much as in the other Jenny Cain books.

Great Story - Poor Proofreading
By Marcie O'Brien
I love all of Nancy Pickard's work and this book is no exception. The injustice, however, is that I ordered this book for my Kindle and the electronic version is permeated with word replacement and punctuation errors. I've only had my Kindle since Christmas and I hope this isn't indicative of what I should expect from future ebooks from Amazon.

An OK light mystery, part of a series set on the coast of Maine. If you like Maine, this series has enough in terms of authenticity to keep you interested. It just needs a bit of something more to compel me to keep reading the series.

Yellow Dirt: A Poisoned Land and the Betrayal of the Navajos, by Judy Pasternak

This investigative feat tells the shocking, heartbreaking story of uranium mining on the Navajo reservation and its terrible legacy of sickness and government neglect, documenting one of the darker chapters in 20th century American history.

Now in paperback, the critically acclaimed Yellow Dirt, “will break your heart. An enormous achievement—literally, a piece of groundbreaking investigative journalism—illustrates exactly what reporting should do: Show us what we’ve become as a people, and sharpen our vision of who we, the people, ought to become” ( The Christian Science Monitor ).

From the 1930s to the 1960s, the United States knowingly used and discarded an entire tribe of people as the Navajos worked, unprotected, in the uranium mines that fueled the Manhattan Project and the Cold War. Long after these mines were abandoned, Navajos in all four corners of the Reservation (which borders Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona) continued grazing their animals on sagebrush flats riddled with uranium that had been blasted from the ground. They built their houses out of chunks of uranium ore, inhaled radioactive dust borne aloft from the waste piles the mining companies had left behind, and their children played in the unsealed mines themselves. Ten years after the mines closed, the cancer rate on the reservation shot up and some babies began to be born with crooked fingers that fused together into claws as they grew. Government scientists filed complaints about the situation with the government, but were told it was a mess too expensive to clean up.

Judy Pasternak exposed this story in a prizewinning Los Angeles Times series. Her work galvanized both a congressman and a famous prosecutor to clean the sites and get reparations for the tribe. Yellow Dirt is her powerful chronicle of both the scandal of neglect and the Navajos’ fight for justice.

In the 1940s, when the U.S. government was embarking on developing atomic weapons, it discovered huge uranium deposits in Navajo territory covering parts of Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. Mines constructed there yielded uranium that would be used in the Manhattan Project and eventually in the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Navajo themselves saw little of the huge profits from uranium but as workers and land dwellers would suffer radiation exposure four times that of the Japanese targeted by the A-bomb. Award-winning environmental journalist Pasternak follows four generations of Navajo families, from the patriarch who warned against violating the land to those tempted by the prospects of jobs and money. She chronicles the cultural stoicism that prohibited them from complaining for so long about the alarming rates of cancer deaths, the betrayal of trust by corporate and government interests, the growing awareness of the tragedy visited on them in the name of national security, and the efforts to fight for restoration. A stunning look at a shameful chapter in American history with long-lasting implications for all Americans concerned with environmental justice. --Vanessa Bush

The Passion of Dispassionate Journalism
By samkatvic
Only once in a great while comes along the combination of a compelling story, exquisite writing, and substantial research so lacking in these days of internet journalism. "Yellow Dirt" is the true story of the exploitation and abandonment of the Navajo people in the United States' quest to fuel their nuclear arsenal. Judy Pasternak, former report for the Los Angeles Times, has filled the book with facts and timelines, but always in the context of the families and their lives that she came to know so well. You feel as though you are standing among them, feeling their pride, their anger, and their anguish. This story is in the hands of a very capable journalist, and the craftsmanship is evident on every page, but what makes this book unique is you feel her heart was in every carefully chosen word. YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK, devour it in one sitting, and pass it on to someone else, with the strict instructions to do the same.

An Investigative Journalist at Her Best
By Jim Hayes
Judy Pasternak's "Yellow Dirt" is a must-buy, must-read and sure-to-pass-on book. It is certain to make the top non-fiction lists and should be a Pulitzer Prize candidate. The book is an outgrowth of a series of four articles published by the Los Angeles Times in 2006, when the author was one of that newspaper's top investigative reporters. It is the engrossing and frightening story of what happened to four generations of Navajo men, women and children who fell victim to cancer-causing radiation poisoning when remote corners of their reservation were mined for uranium. What the Navajo called "yellow dirt" was the explosive ingredient for the two atomic bombs that killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Later, the Indian miners and their families continued to die of cancer, pawns in the international chess game of the Cold War. When the policy became "atoms for peace," more Navajos were killed as their ancestral lands were exploited to fuel nuclear power plants. For decades, the plight of the stoic Native Americans was shunted aside, ignored and even covered up by state and federal officials. Bureaucratic negligence and the misdeeds of the mining corporations that plundered tribal resources is presented by the writer in readable, compelling prose. Much of the narrative comes from Pasternak's painstaking interviews with the usually reticent Navajo miners and their families. Copious end notes and bibliography provide evidence of her diligent research--and a case study of investigative journalism at its best. The Underside of Monument Valley
By Mike B
A penetrating study of what happened to the Navajo people when they started to mine Uranium in the early 1940's.

This occurred on the Navajo reservation that is located in Arizona and Utah. A great deal of the mining was in Monument Valley. The initial reason for extracting the Uranium was the real fear that the enemies of democracy, particularly Nazi Germany, would also start to process Uranium for the purposes of making a nuclear explosion. In the early 1940's little was known of the affects of radiation from exposure to Uranium. There was no effort to protect the Navajo workers. The debris from the mines was dumped pell-mell all over the reservation. Some of the debris was utilized to build homes on the reserve. The water sources were also becoming contaminated by the dynamiting at the mine sites.

After the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki the affects of radiation became very obvious. But on Navajo land nothing at all was done to protect the workers. With the advent of the Cold War and the Korean War Uranium mining kept accelerating in Navajo country.

Eventually workers started dying of cancer (lung cancer, colon cancer, brain tumours). More and more women and children became diagnosed with cancer and died prematurely. Tests and studies were made on people, on the drinking water, and the habitats - some of which showed severe levels of radiation. The radiation was literally spreading more and more across their land. And nothing was done! The companies and the managers got rich. The Navajo's got hardly anything, particularly compared to miners off the reservation.

Both the companies and the various government organizations (and there are many) obfuscated the issues and "Passed the Buck" as people continued to get sick and die. This was certainly not "Government of the people, by the people, for the people...".

To extract this Uranium, haste and utility were used; to compensate and aid the victims and to clean up the radioactive environment, only a withering and inept bureaucracy was encountered. It took over sixty years for a real cleanup to begin in earnest. Some parts of this book make one want to scream in frustration at the intransigence of government and the immorality of companies who put profits ahead of protection of workers.

Ms. Pasternak's book is very well written and frightfully convincing. There is no scientific jargon on radiation to deter readability. We are left saddened once again at the plight of a dispossessed people in North America. A highly recommended read.

Trophy House: A Novel, by Anne Bernays

"Trophy House" is an extraordinary and complex novel, at one level a romantic thriller, at another a deeply satisfying story about the disintegration of a marriage and the consequences for all concerned -- that rare piece of fiction that is at once thrilling, grown-up and completely believable.

It begins with the construction of a totally inappropriate and enormous house -- a "trophy house" -- which unexpectedly comes to threaten the tranquillity of what appears to be one woman's perfect life and marriage. Dannie Faber has lots of reasons to feel blessed. A children's book illustrator, she shares a loving marriage with Tom, an M.I.T. professor, with whom she divides her time between one of Boston's finest suburbs and a beloved beach house in Truro, on Cape Cod. And then, for reasons she could not possibly have foreseen, Dannie's life begins to unravel.

With "Trophy House, " Anne Bernays -- author of "Professor Romeo" and "Growing Up Rich --" delivers a poignant, funny, and ultimately wrenching story of adults in peril and the unlikely hope for romance that, in the end, becomes the key to surviving events that are beyond their control. It is a brilliant and moving portrait of a marriage.

From Publishers Weekly
Is there an impulse stronger than lust—real estate lust, that is—for the comfortably middle-aged? Maybe not, teases Bernays (Professor Romeo, etc.) in this astute, witty romance, beguilingly set in the Cape Cod towns of Truro and Provincetown. Dannie Faber, a successful illustrator of children's books, is so attached to her beach house that she lives there April to November—even though she's frequently separated from husband Tom, a "gentle and distracted" MIT professor. It's a year after 9/11, and Dannie's Truro house has become a haven in a world where "civilization had cracked, setting people and events off in wild spinning." But then crass hotelier Mitch Brenner constructs a "monster house" distressingly nearby—and somebody writes "Jew Pig" in red paint (or is it blood?) on his front door. As Dannie and best friend Raymie speculate about the wrongdoer, readers may expect the plot to focus on the crime. But Bernays switches gears: Dannie turns inward as her marriage falls apart and she begins an affair with her New York editor; floundering daughter Beth moves back home; and Brenner makes a surprising alliance with Raymie. Though the plot is a bit untidy, readers will bond with Bernays's prickly, opinionated, bighearted heroine.

From Booklist
Literary veteran Bernays' compulsively readable novel features a spectacular setting: Truro, Cape Cod. And she entwines two hot topics in the opening chapters: hate crime and the construction of hideous McMansions. But basically this is a sprightly, feminist there-is-life-after-divorce tale. Dannie is a successful children's book illustrator who, now that her daughter and son are adults, loves best to be alone at the family's Truro home with her dog and her art, while her MIT anthropology professor husband lives in Boston. But everything is thrown into turmoil when an outsider builds a monstrous beach house on which someone scrawls an anti-Semitic threat. Suddenly, Dannie is forced to recognize that her marriage has gone cold, just as her daughter realizes that she, too, is in a moribund relationship. Bernays quickly drops any pretense of insights into conspicuous consumption and prejudice, and goes full throttle for a stereotypical women's fiction story line, which she executes with panache, a genuine feel for natural beauty and class conflicts, and an understanding of how smothering marriage can be. Review
"It was a continual surprise."

-- Annie Dillard

"Anne Bernays has done it again. Nobody writes about the struggles of love and family from the inside out better than she does. "Trophy House" is a superbly written tale that, like all of Bernays's novels, uses humor and wit to go deep into the pores of our souls."

-- Jim Lehrer

Vapid
By Opinions Plenty
My personal rating system for films often gets me to a negative number based on ticket price--for example, an $8 film can get a rating from $8 to minus $8. I gave this novel a high negative number. I review nonfiction, mostly business books, so when I read fiction it is for enjoyment. This novel puzzled me...nothing to it, who are these people and who cares? It seems like it was a series of short stories, disconnected and unfinished. I was miffed at myself for reading to the bitter end, but as I was closing the book I thought of two words: vapid and insipid. I looked up the meaning of those words to be sure they described my sense of this book. Yup, they do. So all is not lost. It took me half a day to learn a couple new words.

NOT IMPRESSED
By Marcia Epstein
I thought this book was superficial and not very well written. There was virtually no emotion shown by the characters. They divorced and remarried in record time, and with nothing more than a vague nod to feelings. The back story of vandalism was ridiculously underdeveloped, as was virtually everything else in this book. I'd pass.

If I hadn't been stuck on a five hour flight I never would have finished this ....There was no reason for her political rantings and the plot was silly...so much for book reviews, reader reviews are always better...

Student Learning is Where Teaching Begins
By Theresa Baxter
"Where Great Teaching Begins, Planning for Student Thinking and Learning" goes beyond the mechanics of lesson plan writing, rubrics, grade sheets and other various accouterments of teacher preparation. "Where Great Teaching Begins" strikes at the heart of why people teach at all...to foster and facilitate student learning. Author Anne R. Reeves captures what she calls the "Deep Work" of teaching...designing instruction not for the sake of just "designing a lesson" but to reach down into the subject and wring out every ounce of learning that can be provided to the student. In this manner, lesson planning moves from "classroom-centered, activity-oriented planning that is common among beginning teachers" (like me) to one that is "student- and learning centered." (page 8).

This book is designed for the new teacher but it's obvious that an experienced classroom professional would be well served by reading it. In a world dominated by "No Child Left Behind," and "Race to the Top" metrics, this book reminds all of us that "...focusing on the students, their intellectual work, and the desired end point of their learning will make it easier to see what SHOULD (emphasis in original) happen in class." (page 12)

Here is the deal: I went through it and it had some obvious flaws. No, the fundamentals were there but they seemed overly structured and academic in nature. It seemed that the author was getting paid by the word rather than by the value of it. The author seems a bit out of touch with the issues faced by teachers in public ed. Author seems like a professor that doesn't get out much. I did notice the lesson plan at the end was huge. I understand why it is shown that way, but it is highly unrealistic. It looked like a unit plan as oppose to a lesson plan. Looking at it blew my mind. I think the book is way too complicated for a beginning teacher. Breaking down Bloom/Anderson is fine. The examples of good and bad objectives is excellent. There are some good components here. I had issues with the assessment chapter-too didactic. Ultimately, I would read with a critical eye and while not getting too bogged down in all the clutter. I think it is too complex for new teachers and too wordy for the veterans. I think everyone else should pass and go a different way.

Objectives, objectives, objectives.
By T. Pierce
A must for new teachers or those that need to refocus their efforts. The text has helped me focus on what is most important when creating my lessons....objectives. It all starts with creating good objectives. Three quarters of this book addresses that topic in great detail. There is lesser material on assessment and activities and better books are available for both. I highly recommend this book as do teachers I know.

If God Were Real: A Journey into a Faith That Matters, by John Avant

In this provocative book, pastor John avant encourages readers to uphold a consistent practice of what they believe, not just a verbalization of what they believe. If Christians truly believe in God, they should live genuinely changed lives as the ultimate proof that He is real.

Many Christians live their lives as if they do not believe in God. They go to church and praise His name on Sundays, but in their daily lives they don’t think about the Lord that often. They don’t show much concern or charity for others. They don’t feel gratitude to the Lord for His blessings. They don’t allow God’s love to be reflected in their actions—giving Christianity a bad name in the process. In their practical, day-to-day lives, many Christians are almost living as though they are atheists.

Pastor Avant witnesses many Christians not living up to their claims, and he asserts that there is not much Christ left in that form of Christianity. In If God Were Real, he challenges Christians to consider whether or not they believe in God. If they do, Pastor Avant wants readers to consider what life would be like if they lived as if they believed in God. He advocates for the pursuit of a new Jesus movement that resembles Christ’s original followers—followers who were so steadfastly devoted to Him that their every action reflected His glory. With If God Were Real, readers will embark on an adventure of discovery of the real God and a life lived in praise of Him.

Review
"Here's a prophetic, passionate, and practical book that I hope will inspire the church and individuals to join a new Jesus Movement." -- Lee Strobel, author of The Case for the Real Jesus

"This is a road map for a life of real passion and joy following the real God in the real world." -- Chris Mortensen of ESPN

"John Avant is such a refreshing kind of preacher and writer. He says if God were real, Christians would act like...well, Christians. And guess what, John likes atheists. But that's not surprising; after all, Jesus loves them. If God were real, indeed." -- Louisiana State Representative Frank Hoffman

If God Were Real...the Illusions of Ordinary Life Would Be Shattered

We all need illusions. That's why we love movies.
Monica Bellucci

Shattering the Illusion That Christian Life Is Boring

Who doesn't love a great movie? All of the most exciting and wonderful parts of life are right there on the screen to be enjoyed. Romance? Just come to my house anytime my wife, Donna, is watching television, and there's a pretty good chance she'll be watching Sleepless in Seattle. I thought the movie was kind of touching the first time I saw it. But Donna still cries, even now that she has the lines memorized.

As for me, I'll take a movie with raw, masculine courage every time. Nothing beats Gladiator or Braveheart for making you glad to be a man. Or how about pure adventure, like the Indiana Jones films? What could be more cool than watching Indiana get out of every trap -- and along the way eat monkey brains, defeat evil, and get the girl?

Yes, movies are one of life's pleasures -- even though we know that what they show us are just illusions. Could it be that we love movies because they allow us to experience, if only for a little while, what we'll never really have? Or what we aren't sure we can ever really be?

But what if life is meant to exceed even the best of what we see on film?

What if we are meant to live out the greatest romance of all?

What if we are designed to be powerful and courageous?

What if life could actually be filled with suspense and adventure and we really could live happily ever after?

Well, shouldn't we expect all these things to be true if God is real? If the One who created this vast universe with a word really did come and live as one of us, die and rise again for us, and promise to fill us with his Spirit, why would we not expect all that and more? Especially since Jesus himself said he came so that we "may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).

Yes, things don't always go smoothly in the movies. In fact, a movie with no tension is boring. As Christians, we know that we won't live happily ever after until we get to heaven. In this world we will have pain and difficulties -- but not boredom! Not if God is real.

The movies that seem so exciting to us might be boring when compared with the real lives we are meant to live.

If we actually lived as though God is real.

My friend Gary Witherall calls this kind of life "adventuring for God." Gary is one of those Christians who really believes in God. He has definitely traded in practical atheism for authentic faith. Gary and his wife, Bonnie, put their authentic faith into action as missionaries in Sidon, Lebanon. Regardless of the personal risk involved in taking their Christian witness to a place where many are hostile to Christianity in general and especially missionaries, Gary and Bonnie sought to show God's truth through their authentic, caring lives. They deeply loved the Palestinian people they served.

The following was written on the website of Operation Mobilization, the mission agency with which Gary and Bonnie served: "Some people talk about being on the cutting edge; some actually live there. Fewer choose to live on the bleeding edge of humanity, where nothing is humanly certain except great need, where risk defies other definitions, where light shines the brighter for the enveloping darkness. Sidon in Lebanon is such a place, and Bonnie and Gary Witherall were some of those few."

Gary's belief has been tested in the most extreme ways. In fact, Gary and Bonnie's life should be made into a movie. It already has been written as a book. Total Abandon is the story of Bonnie's murder. Bonnie, a nurse, was shot by a terrorist as she entered the clinic where she cared for Muslim women. The authorities quickly got Gary out of Lebanon. Less than a month after Bonnie's murder, Gary wrote the following in his journal: "Nothing remains and yet I have everything. I lost my wife, my ministry, my beautiful apartment overlooking the Mediterranean, my friends there, my Arabic classes, and three classes a week studying Islam. The little Honda we drove on the bumpy roads through the crazy traffic. The warmth of Bonnie lying quietly asleep next to me. I was robbed but have been found today steadfast, strong as a piece of steel yet completely broken. Lord, sustain me."

Those were not just words in a journal. Since those days of crushing loss, Gary has returned to Lebanon many times, including once with my own daughter. He has stood in front of the place where Bonnie was murdered and preached forgiveness and love to the same culture that killed his wife. And then he sang with my daughter and the others there,..."Blessed be the name of the Lord...You give and take away...My heart will choose to say,...'Lord, blessed be Your name.'"

Those who know Gary watch him live in boldness, forgiveness, joy, and service to others -- even to those who would kill what he loved most. Who lives like this? Only those who believe God is real!

That's what it's like to believe in God. Gary is living, breathing, weeping, laughing evidence that God is indeed real. If God does not exist, Gary has done an incredible job of inventing God's impact in his life!

I've gotten to know Gary well since Bonnie's death. I have laughed and cried with him, counseled him, and received counsel from him. And I had the privilege to help officiate his wedding to Helena, his beautiful new wife (and the granddaughter of a martyr).

God is real to Gary. This man believes it -- and then actually lives as though he does. This has not led to an easy life, but it has led to the adventure of real life. Gary has known passionate love, tragedy and heartbreak, terror and suspense, renewal and new love, courage, danger, and adventure. All of the things we flock to see in the movies are his in real life.

Living for God shouldn't be boring. When we live as though God is real, the true adventure begins. So maybe, after all, living a boring Christian life is a conscious choice, not an inevitable state. Perhaps for most of us the issue is not whether God is real but whether we really want the life that results from living like he is. Perhaps "adventuring for God" is a little too dangerous and risky for most of us. So the question may be, is it worth it to live as though God is real?

Shattering the Illusions of Religion

I've served as a pastor for twenty-seven years and served in a mission agency for two years. I have had the opportunity to see many lives like Gary's -- enough to convince me that only God could be responsible for what I have seen in them. But I have to admit that I've also seen a lot of the opposite -- lives of those who believe in God, who love Jesus, but who have just settled into lives that are nothing like the adventure of following the real God. Most of these are not bad people. They love their families and friends, try to live decent lives, and serve in their churches. But something is missing. Many of them are just overwhelmed with the stuff of life. They're too busy trying to figure out how to afford a third car payment or how to get their son's grades up to think much about such "deep" things. They may never have stopped to wonder if there could be something more to their experience of God -- something that could dramatically impact those allconsuming daily struggles.

Now, living a life of adventure is not, in itself, evidence that God is real. Some people live lives of reckless adventure without God. But my point is that if God is real, there's no need to live a boring life! We are meant for more. You can live a life of temporary adventure without God, but you cannot be an authentic follower of the real God without adventure. And why would you want to?

Many people do want very much to experience more than what they currently know of God. Every pastor hears regularly from those folks who want to "go deeper." I want a deeper knowledge of God too. In fact, I can't think of anything I want more. But my experience has been that many who want to go deeper are actually afflicted with an insidious spiritual disease I call Deeper-Sleep Syndrome. They make the mistake of thinking that going deeper means getting more knowledge about the Bible, having more Bible studies or worship services, or learning some spiritual mystery that they've somehow missed all these years. But as they dive into these things again and again, they're in danger of going so deep that they end up in a deep spiritual sleep, unconscious of what God really wants. That's Deeper-Sleep Syndrome.

The cure is actually quite simple. If God is real, surely he wants us to know him and to know him deeply. In fact, he says he has already told us all we need to know. "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness" (2 Peter 1:3). Knowing more about God is a good thing; but acting on what we know is the real answer. James 2:17 says, "Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

So if we were to begin to really live out the teachings of Jesus, we would find ourselves in the middle of an incredible spiritual adventure.

Can it be that simple? After all, isn't that what Christians are already doing? Or at least something close to it?

I'm not so sure. When I examine my own life, I wonder how much I'm really seeking to follow Jesus, to do exactly what he said. Am I just a part of a church system that does its best to reinvent the words of Jesus to make what he said more palatable for our modern sensibilities, more in sync with the ways we really want to live? Maybe the nineteenth-century philosopher Søren Kierkegaard had it right:

The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly.... My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be...

A Journey with A Challenge
By K. Nolan
WOW! What a Journey - and it's just beginning. The Challenge -- to really live like I believe God IS REAL...I can't begin to condense this must-read into a few sentences, and feel hard-pressed to choose just one of the many underlined statements/passages, so I won't! I'll choose three which is still a struggle!!! But here are a few that stepped on my toes:

Most Christians are either so sheltered within the religious shell of their churches that they don't really know any non-Christians, or they are actively working to oppose them. Or both.

Maybe the key to being a part of a movement of God is deciding that I really want to be a part of it!

The greatest love ever demonstrated was lived out not in feelings of sweet, heart-fluttering romance but in screaming, tortured agony.

The chapter on families -- If God Were Real...Our Family Life Would Shock the World -- well, here's another quote ---- "Children who live our family life on a mission with the real God will not easily trade that in for anything this world has to offer."

All of this from just the first half of the book --- WELL, WELL worth the read!!

Along with two other books I have read recently, this is one I wish I could just have a case full and hand them out!

A convicting State of the Church Address
By Branson Boykin
Dr. Avant provides a compelling view of the current status of the American church and calls us all to action. With what Christianity has become today, we're better off severing ourselves from it and simply call ourselves "Christ followers." Because, sadly, if we were to actually do what God calls us to do, if we were to act like God were actually real, many churches in this country would want nothing to do with us. Reader beware, reading this book may grow in you a desire to live dangerously and to escape the safe bubble we've all put ourselves in. A great buy and a great read.

Confusing Titles, Excellent Writing
By Rusty Taylor
The title of this book is misleading. My initial question was: does this book argue for or against the reality of God? I was quite surprised to find that the book has nothing to do with the existence of God. Instead, it discusses how Christians should act if they truly believe that God is real.

The same ambiguous phraseology crops up in the chapter titles. As I came to the beginning of each chapter, I read its title and before proceeding to read the chapter, I tried to guess what the chapter was about. I was right only once. In fact, most of the titles left me clueless.

With that said, I found this book to be very well written, engaging, and challenging. Avant's excitement and passion come through clearly in his writing. Avant is honest and direct. He says what he thinks. Christians always need to be challenged. We need to re-evaluate ourselves constantly. Avant succeeded in helping me to re-examine and re-focus my life and my convictions. That says a lot about a book in this genre. Not many succeed.

So, if you are willing to hear open and honest constructive criticism, read this book. If you are too set in your ways to ever consider the possibility that you might need to improve, don't bother because it will probably only make you mad.

Either way, if you do read this book, be sure to ignore the titles and jump right into Avant's excellent writing.
