About the Author
Grant Wiggins is the president of Authentic Education in Hopewell, N.J., a consulting, research, and publishing organization. Wiggins consults with schools, districts, and state education departments on a variety of reform matters; organizes conferences and workshops; and develops print materials and web resources on curricular change. For 20 years, Wiggins has worked on some of the most influential reform initiatives in the country, including Vermont's portfolio system and Ted Sizer's Coalition of Essential Schools. He has established statewide consortia devoted to assessment reform for North Carolina, and headed standards clarification work for the state education departments in Delaware, New Jersey, and Mississippi. He earned a doctorate in education from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from St. John's College in Annapolis, Md
Jay McTighe has a wealth of experience developed during a rich and varied career in education.
He served as director of the Maryland Assessment Consortium, a state collaboration of school districts working together to develop and share formative performance assessments. Prior to this position, McTighe was involved with school improvement projects at the Maryland State Department of Education. He is well known for work with "thinking skills," having coordinated statewide efforts to develop instructional strategies, curriculum models, and assessment procedures for improving the quality of student thinking. McTighe also directed the development of the Instructional Framework, a multimedia database on teaching.

Worth it.

The UBD 2.0 template is absolutely wonderful. If you're an educator like me, than I know what your bookshelf looks like. The highest praise I can give these two books, is that they are the only unit planning books that I need. Clocking in at ~120 pages each I think that's a testament to how much information they can pack in. I use the 2.0 template for units and it saves me so much time lesson planning because I just follow the Transfer, Meaning, and Acquisition skills which I develop based off the Learning Targets, and viola! Instant lessons.
Although I know this isn't the only way to design units, and I have definitely cut some corners - but when I actually sit down and put the time into this template, something magical happens and every lesson is instantly 10x better.
These beat the actual UBD Expanded 2nd edition for usefulness and readability and would recommend these over it any day.
Also - the "Guide to Creating High Quality Units" is the better of these two and if you're looking for the least amount of bang for your buck just go with that one. But the Advanced Concepts one is a good guide to follow while revisiting units the following year.

A must have for educators serious about curriculum design

Whether a novice or pro at Understanding by Design these text will be your go-to and desk companions. I have marked mine up, made several photocopies and shared with teachers and admin alike. This is a great investment if you are serious about really improving and refining your teaching and learning.
