Days of God: The Revolution in Iran and Its Consequences, by James Buchan

A myth-busting insider’s account of the Iranian Revolution of 1979 that destroyed US influence in the country and transformed the politics of the Middle East and the world.

The 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran was one of the seminal events of our time. It inaugurated more than thirty years of war in the Middle East and fostered an Islamic radicalism that shapes foreign policy in the United States and Europe to this day.

Drawing on his lifetime of engagement with Iran, James Buchan explains the history that gave rise to the Revolution, in which Ayatollah Khomeini and his supporters displaced the Shah with little difficulty. Mystifyingly to outsiders, the people of Iran turned their backs on a successful Westernized government for an amateurish religious regime. Buchan dispels myths about the Iranian Revolution and instead assesses the historical forces to which it responded. He puts the extremism of the Islamic regime in perspective: a truly radical revolution, it can be compared to the French or Russian Revolutions. Using recently declassified diplomatic papers and Persian-language news reports, diaries, memoirs, interviews, and theological tracts, Buchan illuminates both Khomeini and the Shah. His writing is always clear, dispassionate, and informative.

The Iranian Revolution was a turning point in modern history, and James Buchan’s Days of God is, as London’s Independent put it, “a compelling, beautifully written history” of that event.

From Publishers Weekly
British novelist and journalist Buchan traveled to Iran as an undergraduate in the 1970s. Shocked by its dissipated modernity, he says, I thought I had come too late to see what I had come to see, forgetting an ancient lesson: that in a year or two even this, also, would be obliterated. His deep connection to the country serves him well in this sweeping panorama of the Shah's Iran and its rejuvenation, occlusion, and disintegration under Khomeini. Buchan's dry wit suffuses the poetic and philosophical—if not always straightforward—text; characters appear in major episodes before they have been properly introduced, events are mentioned in passing before they unfold. He devotes equal space to critical yet sympathetic portraits of the Rezas and to Khomeini. Of the first Pahlavi Shah, he says, In introducing the notion of a powerful state, Reza was the most influential Iranian of the last century, more influential even than Ruhollah Khomeini. The Ayatollah, pensive and closed to the world, drowned his religion and his country in a ruthless obscurantism: It is said that once in Isfahan, the great Safavid divine Majlisi gave an apple to a Jew.... No such stories are told of Ruhollah Khomeini. Agent: Joy Harris, Joy Harris Literary Agency. (Oct. 15)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The recent history of Iran is a story dominated by stories of pillage by Western powers, swings toward military dictatorship, and promises unfulfilled. In this fascinating work reaching back to the close of the nineteenth century, Persian scholar Buchan has marshaled much of the available documentation and his own personal experiences in producing this definitive account of the long, revolutionary birth of the theocracy in Iran. Along the way, Buchan reveals an Iranian nation ever struggling toward modernity and torn by its past steeped in colonialism. The majority of the work follows the reign of Reza and Mohammad Reza of the Pahlavi dynasty, who attempted to drag Iran out of its “medieval past” on the fluctuating tide of oil prices only to be whisked aside upon the return of the exile Khomeini, in 1979. Buchan strikes a hopeful tone that if Iran can negotiate the nuclear crisis, it can enter the “ranks of the advanced nations.” Readers of Middle Eastern histories and diplomacy will find Buchan’s skillful narrative both edifying and intellectually engaging. --Brian Odom

Review
“The author's grasp of Persian literature and the Persian language allows him to treat Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution with rare insight and compassion.” (Roya Hakakian The Wall Street Journal)

“Magisterial. . . . James Buchan’s Days of God, a survey of the Pahlavi years, with spectacular detail on the revolution itself, includes some deft portraiture and notes of literary grace. Buchan, who lived in Iran in the late 1970s, writes with an irreverence and confidence born of long familiarity, and the Iran of his history feels vibrantly present.” (Laura Secor Foreign Affairs)

"[Buchan] mines the literature in Persian and English to better effect than any historian so far....[a] fine, elegantly written book." (The Economist)

“This is a compelling, beautifully written history of a country which has produced great literature, art and a warm people whose lives have been manipulated by other countries with ulterior motives and by their own autocratic and theocratic dictators.” (Leyla Sanai The Independent)

“A soundly argued account of the causes, course and consequences of the revolution . . . Buchan, a Persian scholar and former Financial Times foreign correspondent, puts his first-hand experience of Iran to perceptive use.” (Tony Barber Financial Times)

“A wonderfully detailed and authoritative account of the Shah’s final days and the murder and mayhem that followed.” (Jonathan Rugman The Spectator)

“A superb and original history of the Iranian Revolution. It’s essential reading.” (Simon Sebag Montefiore Mail on Sunday Books of the Year)

“An outstanding analysis of the legacy of Iran’s revolution.” (Sunday Times)

"A well-informed account of revolutionary Iran." (David Pryce-Jones National Review)

“May be the best single general-audience book on the Iranian Revolution. . . . Days of God is a balanced portrait of an unbalanced time, and one of the most distinguished books about a revolution that has still not reached its conclusion.” (Graeme Wood The Christian Science Monitor)

A thrilling, magisterial first-hand account of the Iranian Revolution
By Dr Ali Binazir
"Is that the sound of firecrackers, Mom?"
"No. That's the sound of bullets, Ali. You should stay inside."

That was my first revolution, in January 1979. We lived in the upper-middle class North Tehran neighborhood of Saltanat Abad ("Monarchyville"), but I could still hear the report of gunshots from Jaleh Square far south. What were people fighting over? To a kid, it didn't make any sense.

The standard narrative of the Iranian Revolution of 1979 reads something like this: The Shah was a dictator who did a fair amount to build up and reform the country, but was also profligate and repressive. He used the Savak, his secret Police, to silence and torture dissenters. Eventually, his time came up, and a monolithic popular uprising brought Ruhollah Mousavi Khomeini, a.k.a the Ayatollah, to power.

That's not even close to the whole murky, thrilling and heartbreaking story.

James Buchan was a student in Tehran in 1973. From that vantage point, he observed firsthand the gradual unraveling of the regime of Mohammed Reza Pahlavi - "the Shah" - and the forces involved in it. Fluent in Persian, he has consulted hundreds of sources to reconstruct meticulously the 20th-century history of Iran - from before the ascension of Reza Shah, Mohammad Reza's father, to the events culminating in the Revolution of February 1979, to the ceasefire of the Iran-Iraq war in 1989. Buchan understands the variables at play in the Shah's ouster:

"It is hard to say at what moment it became clear that Mohammed Reza would go. With the center of his regime disintegrated, both extremes of it required him off the stage: whether for a civilian government headed by an elder statesman or moderate oppositionist, or so the army in the manner of 1953 `rectify the situation.' Few knew of the Shah's illness, but he appeared to be badly in need of rest on the Caspian, or Kish Island or at Bandar Abbas, where, as Mohammed Reza put it later, he could `visit his navy.'"

To this day, people argue over what actually happened in Iran during those times of tumult. Who was responsible for the 1953 coup ousting the popular premier Mossadegh? Why didn't the Shah suppress his opponents when he had the time, resources and political capital? Who set fire to the Rex Cinema in Abadan, killing 400 people and triggering the cascade of events leading to the Shah's abdication? (Answer: a lone, bored twentysomething religious fanatic and drug dealer, who later turned himself in out of unbearable guilt). How did Khomeini, in exile for 14 years, overnight and seemingly unanimously become the leader of the disparate opposition factions? Who decided to take the US Embassy hostages and hold them for 444 days? (Rogue unauthorized students - one of whom a young President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - whose cause the revolutionary leaders retroactively co-opted.) What really happened with Iran-Contra?

Out of disparate, scattered and conflicting sources, Buchan constructs a narrative of modern Iranian history that is the most historically accurate I have encountered. It is a magisterial account of all the different forces pulling at Iran's soul over the course of a century: murderous neighbors, foreign superpowers, oil, greed, imperial ambition, Shi'a Islam, and deeply flawed actors invested with too much power and not enough principle.

It's a riveting account and a real-life thriller - especially if you were a boy who lived through the decline and fall of the Shah, the rise of the Islamic Republic, and the Iran-Iraq war. Today, 34 years later, I finally realize how little I understood of what happened in that swirl of passion, gunfire and fate that was the Iranian Revolution. For example:

--Outside of Tehran, the average Iranian is far more religious than I had imagined. Shi'a Islam dominates their minds in a literal, unquestioning way as Christianity does the American Bible Belt.
--The revolution started out with democratic intention and then, echoing 1789 France, quickly morphed into a bloody, autocratic one.
--Far from being a bullying dictator, the Shah's cardinal sin was "discomfort wielding power," directly leading to his demise.

What broke my heart reading this book were the accounts of near-misses and dumb luck that could have dramatically shifted the fortunes of Iran. For example:
--In 1978, the Rex Cinema arson and a 7.8 Richter earthquake killing thousands in the provinces happened in rapid succession. The opposition blamed the regime for both, fanning the fires of foment.
--At the same time, the Shah contracted lymphoma, and his doctors hid it from him, delaying treatment for an already weakened, vacillating man.
--Khomeini almost got crushed by the crowd of welcomers upon his arrival from exile in Tehran. Were it not for a helicopter that materialized deus ex machina, the 76-year old leader would have perished on the first day of the Revolution.
--Khomeini's designated successor and favorite student, Montazeri, openly criticized Khomeini for the torture and mass murder of political prisoners. Furious, Khomeini disowned and banished him and picked the far less moderate Ali Khamene'i as his regent, who has been the bugbear of the West ever since.
--And in 1982, Saddam Hussein offered Khomeini a cease-fire -- plain admission of defeat. Khomeini rejected it; hundreds of thousands of young men perished for 7 more years of pointless war.

Khomeini died in June 1989, soon after the end of that war. Buchan's account of the funeral encapsulates the events of the book and all of Iranian history:

"Amid clouds of dust and in blinding heat, the Tehran fire brigade sprayed the mourners with jets of water, both to calm the excitement and also as an element of ritual. Iranian history is a sort of passion play, a constant recitation of the foundation tragedy of Shi'a Islam, which is the Prophet's family, ringed by murderous enemies and tormented by heat and thirst, at Karbala in Iraq in October 680. Many in the crowd were mourning not a revolutionary leader or a canon juris, but the "Imam," a title applied in Iran up to then only to the perfect Shi'a saints of the Middle Ages."

I managed to escape that war in 1985, when the rain of Saddam's bombs on Tehran could no longer be sanely ignored. We restarted from zero in West Los Angeles, where this once-pampered kid had to share a bedroom with his mother. To support us, she talked herself into a job as a seamstress at the only laundromat that didn't ask for her Green Card. I got into Harvard and turned out okay. In the meantime, a kind, hospitable and ingenious people were set back a century and consigned to status of pariah nation for the next 34 years.

The best history is the kind that bears useful instruction for its living readers, and Days of God is such a book. I'm grateful for James Buchan's lucid account, which provides a salve of understanding for both the bereaved Iranians who lived through the Revolution, and the rest of the world that feels its aftershocks to this day.

days of god
By Ed Deisley
i have read about a half dozen books which cover this same time period & i rated them all four or five stars; however, buchan's book is the best by far, most informative, best written covering time period from before first palavi shah, thru rise & fall of last shah and the rise of kholmeni til his death in 1989 with some info since in epilogue; also has some good insight into iraq/iran war but does best detailed account of the 1978-81 time period compared to the other books i have read; tells of events from all sides, i.e. iran, USA, israel, iraq others; i recomend this book highly for anyone who wants to know more about this important time period which still effects world events today

Best Read Thus Far
By Carly e Putnam
Of all the books I have read and studied through my years of self-education and college this one is by far the most informative in my opinion. The attention to detail and perspective given is flawless and completely worth every penny. I found more information in this book than I have sitting in any lecture or in reading any textbook. I highly recommend this book.

A Must-Have Book for Professional Development
By Larry Kawano
I have learned about and appreciated leadership like nothing before since we started applying the Caine's Process Learning Circle to a study of John Maxwell's "The 360° Leader." Within their book, "Strengthening and Enriching Your Professional Learning Community: The Art of Learning Together," Geoffrey and Renate Caine offer this fantastic process on making the best of professional development.

As a professional, you seek to advance by learning and often you learn together with other professionals. How best to do this? All too often I have found my time wasted with sessions dominated by a few individuals, characterized by a lot of talking and little thoughtful listening, and lacking a clear outcome.

The Caines' Process Learning Circle consists of a 4-step process that begins with an activity called Ordered Sharing which creates a safe environment for all to participate and encourages attentive listening. They use their extensive knowledge of how we learn to set up the second step, Reflective Study. Part of how we learn is through the application of what we gain through study and that's the role of the third step, Implications for Practice, Commitment to Action. The session is then rounded out with Regrouping.

The Caines have done much research and given much thought on how to do this right. Anything taken to the highest level is an art and this is professional development as an art. You need to have this book as your guide.

Men Are Stupid . . . And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman's Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery, by Joan Rivers, Valerie Frankel

Red-carpet fashion laureate, comic icon, and outspoken superstar Joan Rivers is uniquely qualified to talk about plastic surgery—because she's one of the few celebrities unafraid to admit to the world what she's “had done” to keep looking so great. Now, in this no-holds-barred book, she gives women straight-talking advice on better living through looking better.

Joan Rivers' abiding life philosophy is simple: in the appearance-centric society of the twenty-first century, beauty is key—especially where men are concerned. Men like pretty women. And so, getting something lifted, tightened, adjusted, or removed is as fundamental as wearing makeup or using hair conditioner; it's become something we do to make ourselves look better. Now, for any woman considering her options, Joan Rivers takes the mystery out of cosmetic surgery with a practical overview, aided and informed by the country's top plastic surgeons, of almost every single cosmetic procedure legally performed in America today. She takes readers step-by-step through these entire processes, from fi nding the right doctor to the bruising truth about recovery and the facts about cosmetic surgery's very real risks.

But don't worry—there's dish, too. Filled with Rivers' personal anecdotes about life under the knife, Men Are Stupid...And They Like Big Boobs is also rife with Hollywood gossip about who's done what and how often. Part comic musing, part bitch-fest, and part hands-on advice, this is a bracingly funny, wildly frank, and genuinely passionate argument for a woman's right to do whatever it takes to be beautiful, to feel better about herself, and most of all to be happy -- not only with who she is, but who she wants to be. Throughout the book, Joan Rivers is right there, guiding and encouraging with no apologies, no excuses, and absolutely no shame. Take it from the woman who enjoys having it all—done.

A Q&A with Joan Rivers

Q: What kinds of books do you enjoy?

A: At my age, anything in large print.

Q: Who inspired you to become a writer?

A: An agent who told me I was too ugly to be in front of the camera.

Q: Is it true when they say that you should “write what you know”?

A: Absolutely, which is why my next book is about having thighs that are visible from outer space.

Q: Writing is a tough profession. Do you remember the first time you were rejected?

A: My wedding night.

Q: What is it like having a novel? published at the age of 75?

A: I am so old, even the spine of my book has osteoporosis.

Q: Computer, typewriter or pen and paper. What tools did you use to write your first book?

A: Chisel and stone.

Q: Are you one of those writers who work at home in a dirty old bathrobe without showering for days?

A: Yes, except for the part about working at home.

Q: What’s the first step in getting a publisher interested in your book?

A: A check for fifty grand made out to “cash”.

Q: Is it true that the murder mystery was heavily influenced by fashions seen on the red carpet?

A: Absolutely. Even the dust jacket was made by Chanel.

Q: What was the most important thing that you learned while writing a book about plastic surgery?

A: Always use the spell-check when you’re still under anesthesia.

From Publishers Weekly
The Rivers brand of comedy, celebrity gossip, fashion commentary and motivational chutzpa so beloved by her fans is on full display in this guide to elective plastic surgery. As a reader, Rivers embodies the Can we talk? accessibility of her standup persona, never missing an opportunity for a colorful pun or punch line. Still, she projects authority when imparting medical advice about cosmetic procedures, particularly the importance of selecting a reputable physician and following protocols for after-care and recovery. Her guide spans wrinkle removals to various aesthetic enhancements to female genitalia. Rivers's candor offends and endears with equal measure, and her irreverent treatment deserves credit for offering guidance from health professionals. A Simon & Schuster hardcover. (Jan.)

We CAN Tawk!
By Kimberly R. Stagliano
I bought this book on Saturday at Joan's signing at the Bank Street Book Nook in New Milford, CT. If she can fill a bookstore to bursting in the middle of CT, you KNOW she has a great book!

I'm not a fan of cosmetic surgery (today...) But I have to say - I can NOT discern Joan Rivers' age from standing 2 feet away from her. She looks wonderful. And she is gracious and cordial (I had my autistic daughter with me and we were having a moment....)

I mean, who the heck is the average woman going to ask about these procedures? The book lays out everything a woman of a "Certain Age" needs and wants to know and adds Joan's trademark humor. What more could you ask for (except a pocket full of cash to afford the work!)

Now I'm off to read Murder at The Academy Awards.

PRESCRIPTION FOR LAUGHTER. NO REFILLS REQUIRED
By Alan W. Petrucelli
This Rivers is once again overflowing with wit, wisdom and wisecracks. "Men are Stupid . . ." is a fun (and fact-filled) excursion into the semi-conscious world of nips and tucks by a woman who's been so surgically streamlined that her belly-button . . . ok, we'll leave the jokes to her. She'll hold your hand when it comes to physician picking, lip plumping, mole removal, wrinkle filling . . . as self-effacing as it is ego-centric, Men are Stupid won't leave you in stitches, but it will bring a pre (and post) operative smile to your (new) face

funny but informative
By A. White
I'm not too far into the book, but it's typical joan rivers. She openly discusses her plastic surgery and the reasons behind it, with no reservations. It's very much like her monologues, and easy to read.

The House of the Wind: A Novel, by Titania Hardie

The internationally bestselling author of The Rose Labyrinth returns with a love story of magic and healing that takes readers from the heartache of a young human rights lawyer in present-day San Francisco to the lives of a courageous trio of women in medieval Tuscany.

A legendary ruin. An ancient mystery. Will unveiling the past transform the future?

San Francisco, 2007. Madeline Moretti is grieving after her fiancé's death. Nothing brings her joy any more, and Maddie’s grandmother, a fiery Italian, sends her to Tuscany to heal. Here, Maddie is immersed in the mystery of a ruined villa. Destroyed centuries ago in a legendary storm on the Eve of St. Agnes, it has been known ever since as the Casa al Vento—the House of the Wind.

Tuscany, 1347. Mia hasn’t spoken since her mother’s death and lives in silence with her beloved aunt. One dark night, a couple seeks refuge in their villa. Accustomed to welcoming passing pilgrims, Mia is entranced by the young bride’s radiance and compassion but mystified by her reluctance to reveal even her name. Where has she come from, and why must her presence be a secret?

Centuries apart, each searching for a way to step into her future, both Mia and Maddie will be haunted by the myth of the young woman who walked unscathed from the ruins of the House of the Wind.

Review
“Utterly fascinating. Totally absorbing. A magical blend of historical fiction and modern day suspense, The House of The Wind is a marvel of the esoteric. An entrancing and enchanting novel that combines myth and folklore, past and the present, mystery and romance, and clearly cements Hardie’s burgeoning reputation as a literary conjurer.” —M.J. Rose, internationally bestselling author of The Book of Lost Fragrances

“Addicting.... Hardie has merged Under the Tuscan Sun with Erin Brockovich into a story both heavily atmospheric and thematically hypnotic.” —Publishers Weekly (starred)

“At times lyrical, the tale of Maddie’s journey will charm those who are enraptured by the Tuscan mystique.” —Booklist

Intriguing story
By Damaskcat
Madeline Moretti is a lawyer in San Francisco. Her father's family is Italian and Madeline is very close to her grandmother Isabella. When tragedy strikes and Maddie finds herself sunk in grief for her dead fiancé Chris, her grandmother encourages her to spend some time in Tuscany discovering her roots. But Maddie is closely involved in a complex legal case against a large company and the effects of its working practices on the health of its employees.

Interwoven with Maddie's story and her fight not to be overwhelmed with grief for Chris is the story of Mia, a girl who loses her ability to speak in fourteenth century Tuscany and her friendship for a young woman who arrives as a pilgrim at the door of the manor house Mia shares with her aunt. This is a dense slow moving story written on many levels. Past and present connect and events in the present reflect those in the past. Corporate power and its misuse have always been around in one form or another and women trying to carve out meaningful lives for themselves against all the odds are also a universal motif.

I felt the story flagged a little at times though I loved the time Maddie spent in Italy and felt the author brought it vividly to life. I was not so enthralled by the fourteenth century story unfortunately and felt it dragged a little. I did think the connections between past and present were well done and very subtle at times so that I only appreciated some of them when I was thinking about the book after I had finished reading it.

I was totally hooked by the last one hundred and fifty pages and was moved to tears by some of it. The writing is poignant and all the better for not being overdone and sentimental. I did warm to Maddie as a character and wanted her to come through her bad time and find peace and happiness and this kept me reading.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes novels where past and present are linked and who likes a story in which they can immerse themselves. This is a good long read and you will find yourself totally lost in the worlds it creates. The only reason I have not given the book five stars is because I felt it was perhaps too long and it tended to drag a little at times but others may like a slower story and this is a personal point of view.

Wonderful story!Fall in Love with San Francisco & Italy!
By C. Fox
I've spent time in San Francisco and Italy (lucky me!), so this book caught my interest right away. I agree with other reviewers that the modern portion of the story is a bit predictable but there are so many good parts to this book to enjoy that buyers shouldn't be discouraged by the other reviews. In the modern portion of the book, there's a workman's comp legal battle, a restoration of a medival Italian villa/farm in Tuscany, a young romance cut short by an airline crash and an interesting family dynamic. The other story line occurs in the mid-14th century near Siena, Italy, and revolves around an aunt and niece who welcome pilgrims into their villa/farm and deal with everything from the plague to roving brigands to the vagaries of the medieval church, in all it's corruptness.

I'm sending this book as a gift to a friend who enjoys large, complex books and I will probably send a copy to another friend for an upcoming birthday. If the coverage of San Francisco sights and food don't get you, the italian ones should. Fresh spinach sauteed with white beans. garlic, olive oil, and fresh mushrooms - aah,Tuscany!

Not a Bit Boring!
By Tanya Blake
I did not find this book boring at all. (It is not some kind of quick beach read, however. If that is what you are looking for, this ain't it. Patience and thoughtfulness are called for.) I was thoroughly engrossed in it throughout. The historical part of the story, taking place in Tuscany in the 1300s, was fascinating, with its descriptions of the Black Plague and the raids of the condottieri, just to name a few of the events the characters got caught up in. In the modern story, the heroine similarly becomes caught up in the "condottieri" raids of a corrupt modern corporation.
There are spiritual, mystical elements to this novel that are extremely intriguing, thought-provoking, and beautifully integrated into the multi-level story. There are some very involving love stories as well. And, the prose is uncommonly good compared to that of many novels today. Altogether, a lovely read.

If you teach, GET THIS BOOK!
By Ginny L. Huckaba
This book is the 2nd edition published by McREL Institute and continues the research first reported on by Marzano, PIckering and Pollock in the 1st edition. It is VERY teacher friendly, groups the strategies into 3 categories: Setting the Learning Environment; Accessing Knowledge; Extending Knowledge and provides real-world examples as well as tips for use with "Today's Learners." This is a MUST HAVE for any teacher who is seriously in search of improving his/her instructional practice.

Cookbook of Classroom Strategies
By Reviewinator
This is a great book for any teacher regardless of where they are in their career. For beginning teachers it is a valuable resource for teaching strategies. For a teacher in the middle of their career, it is a good tune-up. For a veteran teacher it is a good resource to understanding how teaching is changing and fresh ideas.

I would recommend it to anyone interested in instruction and teaching. I especially recommend it for teachers. It provides the research of why the strategies work and what to do with them.

Unusable!
By Disappointed consumer
When I received this book, it has duplicate pages so many pages are missing making it completely unusable! I was excited to have a tool to help our teams with protocols however the book is totally unusable. I ordered a new copy and it has a stamp in the front from a school district so it is obviously not new. Very disappointing

Excellent resource!
By Michael D. Rubin
For educators or administrators who are looking for a practical and systematic approach to utilizing common meeting time, this book is an excellent resource. Many of the protocols listed can be applied to situations with students, and, for the most part, the text offers strategies depending on the type of situation. I would suggest using this book in conjunction with a resource for facilitators and only after some remediation on types of questions for staff and students.

Gladiator: A True Story of 'Roids, Rage, and Redemption, by Dan Clark

Aggressive, explosive, and boasting awesome athletic ability, Dan Clark rose to tremendous fame as Nitro on American Gladiators. He quickly emerged as the most popular cast member and became a reality television superstar. But a twenty-year affair with steroids led to a life of pissing blood, smuggling drugs, destroying hotel rooms, getting arrested, growing breasts, and lying bloodied in the street after a vicious fight with his best friend.

This is Clark's riveting, fiercely candid account of his life, career, and steroid addiction. From an upbringing defined by tragedy and a difficult search for identity to tales of performing center stage at Madison Square Garden and bedding Playboy Bunnies and porn stars, Clark explores the price of fame, the pressure of stardom, and how the whole steroid-fueled fantasy finally imploded.

What began in high school as a way to speed up recovery from injury rapidly turned into an all-consuming addiction. With selfdeprecating humor and a trove of incredible stories, Clark provides an eye-opening report on the dangers of steroids both obvious and hidden -- and offers his thoughts on why steroid use remains a persistent problem today. More than just a pulpy exposé, Gladiator is a triumphant story of self-discovery and redemption.

INTRODUCTION

Being "Nitro"

Come at me the wrong way tonight and you may not walk out of here alive.

Nitro.

I can't see the audience yet, but I can hear the expectant buzz of excitement as they call out my name. The buildup is infectious. My heart pounds as I pass through the entrance, turn a corner, and catch my first glimpse of thousands and thousands of fans dressed in red, white, and blue. They seem to stretch out forever.

Nitro.

Totally pumped, I burst onto the arena floor of Madison Square Garden as fifteen thousand cheering fans slam to their feet. It is a fantastic world like no other -- breathtaking, infinite. I lose myself in the reverberations smashing into each other, a wonderful chaos, as one noise rises above the uncontrolled fervor of screams and whoops. A chant.

NITRO!

All eyes are on me. I luxuriate as the people in the stands lose sight of who they are. Dignity and restraint are tossed aside because standing before them is a hero upon whom they can project their thrills, dreams, and insatiable demands.

NITRO! NITRO! NITRO!

I stand in the midst of the pulsating frenzy, lapping up and sucking in each and every drop.

I look up and catch my breath. There I am, larger-than-life, plastered on the giant JumboTron screen that dangles above the arena like a suspended star.

God, let me die right here.

I begin to run the outer perimeter of the arena in a prebattle ritual. The lyrics to a song by The Who blast from a two-hundred-watt amp and dance in my head.

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man...
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

I spot my opponent for the upcoming event. The hair on the back of my neck and my arms stands up, my heart thumps, and my ears ring loudly with each step toward my opponent -- until I am standing across from him.

Like all the ones before him, he is scared. He closes his eyes and sucks in a stiff breath of courage. I can see his eyelids flutter and I sense the terror that churns inside him. He might have been captain of the football team. Hell, he might even have been the best athlete in his state. But now he is standing in front of fifteen thousand people, trying to beat me.

He thought he had what it took to get here. He'd put his money where his mouth was, and now he is going to pay the price.

The chant explodes again.

NITRO! NITRO! NITRO!

My body vibrates, my heart rattles against my ribs, and every muscle in my body tightens. I am about to explode into my opponent as hard as I can, to hurt him, to punish him, with my rage and my 235 pounds of solid muscle. At this moment I feel revulsion toward my opponent, absolute hatred. All I want to do is wipe the stupid look off his face.

"Contender, are you ready?" Mike Adamle's voice booms out of the speakers.

"Gladiator, are you ready?"

My heart pounds. Louder. Harder. Faster. Get ready, here I come!

The whistle blows. I blast into my opponent with reckless abandon, instantly overwhelming and dominating him. My shoulder slams into his ribs, sending the "football captain" flying in the air before landing in a painful, broken heap at my feet. The world slips away, and for a moment the voices are quiet. The universe is mine. Nirvana. The world makes sense. For one moment in time, everything is in sweet, simple order.

This is my refuge, the reason that I compete. It is all about the rush -- the hits, the legal acts of physical violence that make the crowd roar and make me grin from ear to ear. The rush lasts for only an infinitesimal period of time, but while it is happening, I revel in a make-believe world where normal rules do not apply. I know that when it is over and the cruel reality of life sets in, the joke will be on me, but I don't care. Everybody craves the incomparable power of being a Gladiator -- the potent experience of rising to the heavens, however briefly, igniting and blowing up any dark, hidden places within.

When the referee gives me the victory sign, I fling my arms wide open, tilt back my head, and scream, somehow trying to expose the truth about my beautiful but fucked-up world. The fans are oblivious. I exit the arena while they cheer, and I head into the locker room, where I sit, my head slumped, my body still shooting adrenaline. But even then, when my dreams have become a reality, behind the cheers is a dark secret, a hidden agenda of a life being torn apart and wasted.

I lock myself in an empty stall, and there I am, all alone, the crowd still shrieking from my victory as I sit on the toilet in the shadows and cry for a long time.

Who am I kidding? I know that each time I slam a syringe into my ass or swallow a steroid, it is nobody's fault but my own. I also believe each and every time that I can never stop.

You're asking me why?

Look at the world that has opened up to me.

I have this picture of myself in the back of my head as a chubby kid. And now, girls are hanging on to me, agents wine and dine me, and Warner Bros. wants to make a movie with me.

I pull up to Roxbury, the hottest club in Hollywood. A line of people spills out onto Sunset Boulevard, all waiting to get in. The doorman knows who I am and I slip inside and nod to Sylvester Stallone as I head up the stairs to the VIP room. Everyone is here: Denzel, Van Damme, Snipes, and some rookie seven-foot-two-inch basketball player they call Shaq. The atmosphere is anything-goes. The girls, the armpieces, the hopefuls, the I'll-do-anything-to-get-close-to-celebrity types, pack the room. They're all ripe for the picking. Hell, it is harder to go home alone than it is to take someone with me.

One afternoon, I'm having lunch at Mezza Luna in Beverly Hills when Steve Martin arrives at my table, introduces himself, and tells me he's a huge fan. As I stand up, shake his hand, and tell him I'm his biggest fan, he brings me over to Dustin Hoffman's table and introduces me to the actor and his wife. A few nights later, I'm at the home of the late billionaire Marvin Davis. Tony Bennett is the entertainment, and Cristal Champagne is on ice as I'm introduced to former presidents Ford and Carter. As I'm leaving, Merv Griffin calls out, "Dan, there's someone I want you to meet." It's Ronald Reagan.

-- -- --

I was living the all-expenses-paid life everyone dreams about. I could walk into any place in Hollywood like I was a fucking movie star. I went from looking at the world to watching the world look at me.

The thing is, I love my country. I'm proud to have been the star of a show with the word American in the title. American Gladiators. A hit show that aired in more than forty countries with over 12 million weekly viewers. Madison Square Garden was the first stop in our 150-city live tour and I loved it, but somewhere inside, I knew it was all a lie, that I was deceiving people. But I told myself it was okay because they didn't really want the truth. They wanted to be entertained. That I was addicted to steroids, drugs that not only altered my consciousness but also altered my appearance, was the secret hook that drew the crowds, and everybody ate it up. If only someone had told me the truth back then when I was Nitro and thought I was indestructible.

Of course, the question is, would I have listened? Would I have done things differently if I'd known then what I know today? It's hard to say, but these days you should see me wake up in the morning...or maybe you shouldn't. As a result of twenty years of steroid use, I walk with a limp, I have seven scars on my face, two destroyed knees, and I can't walk up a flight of stairs until I chug a couple of cups of black coffee and a handful of anti-inflammatory pills. What strapping eighteen-year-old athlete could ever imagine ending up with a herniated back disk and a neck that pops like fireworks on the Fourth of July from a mere turn of my head? And those are the obvious problems. The real prizes are a pair of shrunken testicles and surgical scars across my nipples from having breast tissue removed from my chest.

It wasn't always like this...

CHAPTER 1

In Search of an Identity

What are the worst three words a child can hear?

We're getting divorced.

I am four years old in 1968, and my father has just returned to California from a two-year work stint in Vietnam. He walks into the living room of our box-size home in the severely depressed belly of Orange County, California, and announces, "Your mother and I are getting a divorce. You and your brother are going to Minnesota with me. Your sister is staying here with your mom." My father, Wally, is massive, forceful, and relentless. We are all insignificant and powerless in his wake.

So this is it. No explaining. No comforting. No choices. My brother, Randy, two years older than me, is my idol. My hero. My rock. My chubby-cheeked, ebullient little sister, Christine, is two years my junior.

My mother, Kazuko, whom my father met while he was in the marines in Japan, can do little to protest. She's been in the United States for only a short time, barely speaks English, and doesn't understand the customs and laws of this country. She doesn't know it's customary for the mother to get custody of the kids, and she doesn't know my father's threats of deportation are empty slings of intimidation.

A few days later, I'm standing in the airplane aisle watching the flight attendant closing the plane doors. I'm squeezing my eyes shut as hard as I can, with nothing but the blindness of hope that I can still keep this divorce nightmare from happening. That is when I still dreamed. That is when I thought I could make a difference. That is when I still believed. A flight attendant approaches me, shattering the illusion: "Young man, you're going to have to sit down."

I open my eyes to discover I'm still on the plane with my father and my brother already seated to my side. I see my mother, her eyes full of sorrow, on the tarmac ho...

INCREDIBLE BOOK! You can't Imagine that this Actually Happened, You can't Believe he Actually Went Through This!
By Denise Parker
I got his book yesterday (Saturday) and I finished it this afternoon!

The book will completely wrap you up in the stories and the DETAILED descriptions of everything he went through. He doesn't pull any punches, even when it comes to some embarassing details and crazy self-depricating humor.

Even if you aren't a fan of his, or ever even watched American Gladiators, you WILL enjoy this book. There isn't a dull moment. I haven't read a book in ages, but this one made me keep going. I sware I stayed up past 3AM last night (or this morning, whichever way you look at it) reading it and I only stopped because my vision was blurring, I'm not kidding. I didn't want to stop.

This book made me feel kinda guilty, because I was an avid American Gladiators fan, I still am actually, I won't even miss a rerun I've seen hundreds of times! But all the things he did to his body to please the crowd, and to satisfy his addiction because he felt like he NEEDED to use drugs, is detailed and heart-wrenching. I read that somebody cried like four times reading it. I almost came to that, but there were people in the room, and I try not to cry in front of anyone.

His life is defined by the tragedies that he faced as a child and he explains it to the reader like he is TELLING it to you in person. You can actually picture the words playing out like it's a movie; a very sad, graphic movie that you can't look away from, even at the most detailed content that you cannot believe actually happened in his life.

Before reading his book, I knew steroids were bad, I knew about the "glorified side-effects", but I never knew the more inner personal side-effects. Steroids are NO JOKE, using steroids is NO JOKE. It's not a joke, they will [..............]! Dan Clark exposed his most inner secrets in incredible detail to PROVE that steroids are NOT GOOD, they are REALLY NO JOKE, he tells his story to help people understand the more unknown side-effects of steroid use, that people might try to look away from, turn a blind eye to. He DOESN'T depict himself as a victim, he knows he did it to himself. The Epilogue is extremely powerful, extremely powerful. He actually offers up his own advice to parents of athletes.

This book is a great read. It's real, it's detailed all the way through about his using, trying to overcome it, becoming a father, being an American Gladiator, growing up, everything is here, and I recommend it to anybody. If you are thinking about buying this book, don't THINK about it, BUY IT, BUY IT NOW! Definite 5 ***** STAR book, definately.

An evisceration on paper ...
By DACHokie
First of all, I believe that it took a great deal of courage for Dan Clark to write this book ... his willingness to reveal so many personal and embarrassing moments in his life; totally breaking down the ego/persona that consumed most of his adulthood. Not too many people of his caliber are willing to do such and I think this is the reason his book is both believable and an excellent read.

You get the idea of where things are going early on in the book ... a childhood tragedy manifests itself into an out-of-control beast later in life. Although this type of story may seem a bit cliche, it is where Clark's ability to remember details and convey deep rooted emotions that make his story unique and very interesting. There is a lot of relevant background that precludes Clark's days as a Gladiator ... he's a talented, but injury-plagued football player who desperately wants to compete at the highest level (from big-time college to the NFL) and is willing to go any route to get there ... which is where the steroids enter the picture.

The Faustian bargain Clark makes by using steroids to advance his career from football to American Gladiators takes control of his life ... he lives on the brink ... delving himself into a world of excess, whether it be bedding as many women as possible to fighting a group of gang-banger types by himself. He believes the answer to any problem he faces is in a syringe or a pill ... deep down, all along he knows he's damaging himself in the process (like the embarrassment of dealing with gynocomastia), but the immediate results are so superficially gratifying (the fame of being an American Gladiator) he rolls on ... until he reaches the breaking point in which he comes to terms with the tragedy he faced in childhood.

Clark concludes his journey with a sobering statement of steroid abuse/addiction and colors his statement with a list of recognizable names of those who have totally succumbed to the evils of steroid abuse.

"Gladiator" is interesting, inspirational and revealing ... much on par with Samuel Fussell's book "Muscle". Clark has found his niche ... he can write well. The book is humorous, thought-provoking and should be recommended reading for teenage boys with dreams of sports superstardom ... for every year there are probably tens of thousands of Dan Clarks playing sports in high schools around the US, willing to do anything to their body to get to the next level ... and 99% of them will fail in their quest. Dan Clark, however, proves that there is a price to pay for the 1% who do achieve that desired success.

Good...but not Nitro-tastic
By M. Deckard
From the second this came in the mail, I had a hard time putting it down. Some of the life events that Dan Clark writes about are truly moving. However, his language is a bit off-putting in places. I wouldn't loan it to your twelve-year-old to read. In addition, if you are looking for a gladiators tell-all, this really isn't it. There is no mention of several popular gladiators, most notably Turbo. Dan Clark also made it seem that the Gladiators could never possibly survive without Nitro and that the gladiators that stayed on were lackluster and substandard. I was really disappointed in that. However, overall, it is a pretty interesting read. It is really fascinating as to the events that made Nitro who he was and is today.
